I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the automated distro upgrade, and my resolution has been changed to 1024x768. I tried to go to System -> Preferences -> Display to see why this might be, but that entry is missing from my Preferences menu. I am using a Radeon HD 4200 video card, but I am not using any special video drivers right now. /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.
I have fresh installation of ubuntu 9.10, my display preferences are incorrect and no more options to change refresh rate other than 75hz. I understand ubuntu has been targeted to notebook user this time but I am on desktop system with Intel Graphics and g33 motherboard and I want to know the procedure to configure xorg.conf for this purpose.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I open "sound preferences" from either the sound applet or the preferences menu pulseaudio CPU usage goes right up to 100% and proceeds to lock up the entire computer. pavucontrol, paman, and all the other pulseaudio utils work fine, except for ubuntu's sound preferences. It affects a new account.This is my 10.04 desktop that is affected. I have just the default pulseaudio config.

Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed KDE and began using that instead of Unity (less buggy, IMHO) and it was running smoothly until I began configuring my GTK applications for transition in that. I installed the Oxygen-GTK them from gnome-look.org and set that as my default theme for GTK applications under the KDE appearance preferences.
When I log in, however, GTK applications just use the stock Xorg theme until I run "gnome-appearance-properties" in my terminal.I believe that a fix involving .gtkrc would suffice, but I honestly cannot configure it no matter how hard I try.
Yesterday I installed debian squeeze and inside appearance preferences there are: theme, background and fonts tabs but the interface tab is missing. What do I need to install in order to have this missing tab?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get 5.1 surround sound working on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Fedora 13 (64 bit), but there is no option for it under "Sound Preferences - Hardware - Profile". There is an option for "Analog Surround 4.0 Output", which does as it says and uses four of the speakers (front and rear left and right) correctly (and the subwoofer as well I think, though not sure if this is done correctly).Running "aplay -L" gives the following:

it looks like it should be possible to set 5.1 surround sound (i.e. I don't think it's a driver issue).Though running "speaker-test -c 6" doesn't quite work as it should - it outputs via the subwoofer on "Center" and doesn't produce any sound on "LFE". But to start with at least - is there a way of manually forcing "Analog Surround 5.1 Output" to be a choice under "Sound Preferences"?
When I click on System -> Preferences -> System Preferences it never opens. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling from Synaptic but get the same result. This has only happened since I upgrade to 10.04. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

I wanted a server so I can also setup a PDC and webserver.So currently I'm installing ubuntu server 10.04 onto my newly assembled server via usb stick(didn't build in dvd rom drive) I checked the BIOS before loading the OS onto the computer and everything is detected.
there's 1 thing that keeps bugging me. After installation i get a message that the install is complete and usb sticks and all devices should be removed to prevent it from booting the install again.However when i remove the usb stick and I reboot the server I get the following message on the screen:
missing operating system
or
can't find operating system
When I do let the usb stick in, it boots into Ubuntu Server and i can see all my configurations that I made eventhough during install I chose to install it on the HD and paid attention to it I wouldn't touch the usb stick.From here on i could configure the rest, like samba, and give my server an static ip address via the command line.Back to my problem: what can i do to make my server boot from HD without that I have the usb stick in?
I believe I have an old operating system of netbook Ubuntu and I am trying to upgrade to the latest 11 version. My netbook doesn't have a cd drive. I have tried using UNETBOOTIN with my usb drive (2GB) and have encountered problems with the install.
When I boot in it says" missin operating system". Sorry I don't have time to search I am on vacation and internet is sparse. Also i am loading unetbootin with a iso image of the latest version.
On my system, System->Preferences->Software Updates, as best I can determine, completely ignores the "Check for updates: " setting. It looks as if, regardless of what I set, I get daily checks. Is anybody else experiencing this? Anybody got a fix? I like the idea of having the system check for me, so I don't want to just pitch the program.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu 10.4 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I thought, because of a previous experience, that my music and pictures were ok in the windows file system because I would be able to access them. Well I can't. I don't even see the the Windows c: drive. I know its still there because I can boot windows.
So what do I need to do to make the c: volume / drive reappear.
I have to use alsa for audio to work under wine (otherwise pulseaudio starts eating up processor cycles and the audio comes out horrible and distorted), but I have been unable to use the mic. The mic boost is up on the alsa mixer, and they are not muted. I cannot find any options under my system menu for Sound Preferences (which seems to get references in a lot fo help forums), or anywhere else to determine which audio driver the line in on the front uses.
I'm using an Acer laptop from a couple years ago, so support should be no problem.
I just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:

If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.
i tried to install ubuntu on my company notebook, where already xp is installed and I have to work with on monday again ;(I have to partitions 60+60GB with XP and Data. I tried to resize the Boot one to 50 to gain some space for ubuntu. Gparted rezided and moved partition (10unallocated+50boot+60data). I guess thats when the bootloader was destroyed. Now I can not start XP anymore. JaiiXXX! But i have to.
Question now is:
-Would it help to resize again with gparted so that i have 60+60 again and can start working?
-Should i continue installing ubuntu from usb. It is recognizing all partitions correctly and asking to install in dualboot. howeber i guess, when bootloader for xp is not working now, will it work after installation of ubuntu on the 10gb or will it make things more complicated?
-My tummy says first to repair windows xp an then install ubuntu. I have no xp cd since it is company computer. will repair morde work with another xp cd? i would prefer that. i saw that there is another way b reinstalling the xp by bootloader, but it sounds to complicated to me and i am little nervous now.p.s. i recognized that now data partition is flagged with boot . dont know why but put it back to the right partition, nothing changed.

I have 11.04 installed, Gnome 2.32.0 - life has been good until I responded as normal to the update manager this morning. Upon reboot noticed my main menu, system menu and places menu are gone. Other icons and stuff like power button remain on the top toolbar but again, no menus.Googling around I found solutions that were years old and/or did not work for me (like installing XFCE - which did nothing).
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe problem after couple installations (10.10 --> 10.04 --> 10.10 --> 10.04-3) is that system goes to "busybox" after complaining about missing root device. I already have come to conclusion that this problem could be solved by telling the system that the root device is at sda1. However, I'm not able to start grub (by pressing "ESC") at boot before problems start. I'm able to start live-cd and I tried to install "over" the old one (same partitions without format, same username). No luck.
And in the busybox /proc/modules is empty for example. And the grub has worked with previous installations.
How to add something to start when you are logged in (System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications), but I want to know, where this parameters stored.
View 2 Replies View RelatedYesterday Ubuntu One stopped syncing properly: all files and folders were listed on the web site grayed out and tagged with "uploading", while there was "0 bytes Used". I could still upload files manually to the website fairly quickly, so it probably wasn't purely server overload. Anyway, a number of things happened after that:uninstalled the Ubuntu One client packages and reinstalled them in Account settings on the website, I removed my computer, hoping to make a fresh start the Ubuntu online account login system for some reason forced me to change my password (presumably it wasn't strong enough)
After all that, I can still login to the website (with the new password), but the computer can't login. When I type u1sdtool -s in terminal, the result is

When I open Ubuntu One Preferences from the Me menu, it completely freezes at the Account tab; I can't click anything or even close it (have to kill it in terminal).
I suppose the login failure has to do with the old password whcih was saved in the keyring. The removed computer from the account probably complicates the issue.
I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

Does anyone ahve an idea what went wrong with compilation or where I can finde rpm files including MP3 support?
