I have a very basic problem. Whenever I click on About Me(System->Preferences), I cannot see any information editing window. However, the mouse pointer does show the system is budy doing something, nothing shows up and then the pointer returns to default as if the system is no longer busy. What can I do to change my personal info?
View 5 RepliesMy system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

If you of the applet thing on the top bar and click the edit button next to 'Locations' the clock preferences will pop-up.Now if you click on the general tab you will see by default that the clock applet thing should show you the time,temperature and weather...Yet if you look and the applet there is no notification of the of the temperature and weather.I tried to see if un-checking them and closing then opening them up again and re-checking would work but that has no effect.I think this is a minor bug in ubuntu and/or gnome and I would like and update and/or for Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat to correct this.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have some japanese music files stored on a flash drive that the titles of which are in japanese originally. While in the flash drive, when I go to Properties -> Audio, the title is written in japanese. It does not allow me to edit the file, no matter what permissions I have on it, therefore I can't change the name to english. So, I tried Rhythmbox instead, and transfered the file there. I could change the name, however there is STILL a huge problem.
I have around 300 japanese music files, all of which have to be renamed into english.
I did all this for all of them in Rhythmbox, and clicked "quit" when I was done. When I came back to transfer the files to my MP3 player like usual, I opened Rhythmbox, and...
ALL OF THE FILES WERE STILL IN JAPANESE! It didn't save any of the work I did on editing them. But, I calmed down and thought "oh, you can save playlists! I am sure that if I save them on one, it will keep the edits!" I did this, and it saved nothing. It took me 2 hours to finish the renaming, just to find out that it can't save information edits at all.
Is there any way to edit text files with information in a database? The file is supposed to be always the same.. the information is going to be addedd in a specific format
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs Unity have too much serious regressions to be usable desktop (I'll list some so maybe somebody could get an idea what to change for Ocelot 1110 edition):desktop switcher is obnoxious for somebody who is used to having 8-12 virtual desktops and to see in system tray what desktop is taken and what desktop is free. I do not see Pidgin icon in system tray anymore. And I hate (not dislike, but hate) Empathy, so I do not want to hear "Install Empathy". Have empathy for users who just want their apps in system tray! Launcher is bugged. I added Synaptic to it, place in launcher was taken, but there was no icon until restart. I added dconf-editor, there was no icon for it also after restart. weather applet is no more part of date/time tray indicator, but you can install it separately. Yes, you can install it separately, but you can not add your location, and that applet is not smart enough to read your old settings of weather and 1-5 locations for time zones should I go further? In short, 1104 is stable but default login (Unity) is not functional. It is better than M$ Vista which was not stable, but I expected that Ubuntu would adhere to higher standards than one shitty commercial company which wants only money of users and therefore rushed non-functional software to market.
My question (finally): In Ubuntu classic items I added to right click menu using nautilus-actions are not there anymore. They are still present in Nautilus, but not in desktop right-click menu. I googled a bit and found zilch, so I ask here. Please share how to do it (scripts folder is still there, but that would be regression to be unable to edit right click menu, FFS Ubuntu is not proprietary software so we would be helpless and could not tweak our favorite OS how we like it).
Every time I open "sound preferences" from either the sound applet or the preferences menu pulseaudio CPU usage goes right up to 100% and proceeds to lock up the entire computer. pavucontrol, paman, and all the other pulseaudio utils work fine, except for ubuntu's sound preferences. It affects a new account.This is my 10.04 desktop that is affected. I have just the default pulseaudio config.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFirst things first, I've just moved from Ubuntu with Gnome to openSuse with KDE. So I'm lost as doing some things in this environment. However, I'm loving what I'm seeing with suse/kde combo. I'm planning on making an extensive right-click menu to categorize all my applications. Basically I want to have the "start" menu available to me when I right-click. I've google casually for a couple days and haven't found much that helps, but I think its because I'm not using the correct keywords seeing as I'm new to this environment.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a [Desktop Entry], but I'm not sure how to handle hierarchy and stuff like that.
I don't have
System > Administration > Login Window > Local Tab
because I wanted to change my login window I cant change it because I dont have Login window preferences. I do have login screen but I cant change anything graphical there. I am running linux 10.04 LTS.
I got a new computer recently, and just now installed 10.10. Everything was going great.... until when I enabled the Nvidia drivers and set my dual monitors. While things still work fine, it appears I have no theme set (Aside from the Window Border).
When I check in System->Preferences->Appearance it always shows the theme properly for this one window, while all other windows, and gnome panels etc appear to have no theme set (just use simple flat colours, low graphic mode etc).
Changing the theme (via the Appearance window) does not work, nor does a simple reboot.
Is there a alternate way to open the Nautilus Preferences Window (http://i.imgur.com/hCffn.gif)? I cannot open it via Edit -> Preferences (the option is not there). I removed Nautilus-Elementary and I think that messed up something.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn windows when I install gvim/vim, it automatically installs a context menu in explorer that lets me edit a file in gvim by simply right clicking and pressing v. For someone who edits a lot of files and is really used to vim, it is super-convenient. I want to do the same thing in nautilus. So I installed nautilus-actions and added to the context menu of editing with gvim. That wasn't hard. The hard part is getting that keyboard key to bind to that context menu item. Currently when I right click and press v, it sends the item to trash. I want it such that when I right click a file and press v, it edits the file in gvim. How can I do that? I want a good solution, and am willing to switch file managers/window managers if need be. This particular shortcut key is very important to my user experience.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Firefox 3.6 installed on slackware64-current and everything works correctly.However when I use Firefox 3.6 on slackware-current (32bit) and I do Edit -> Preferences, the window is opened but the content does not display. If I click the close button, Firefox terminates, but I can no longer get the focus onto another window and I have to restart X with Ctrl-Alt-backspace.(The same thing happens when I try to logout of LQ!). I have tried reinstalling Firefox 3.6 and jre to no avail. I have tried removing my ~/.mozilla/firefox to build a new profile. The same problem also occurs as root. I have reverted to Firefox 3.5.7 and all is OK.

In case any one wants to see what I am trying to tell just open that page [url] and try to click on some menu button in navigation bar. You will see an advertisement "Play online games"
Now I would like to tell Firefox-->Edit-->Preferences-->Content-->Block Pop up windows there is a tick on that box. Also as I open that page [url]I do see a message in firefox which says this page tried to open pop
up windows which have been blocked.
And inspite of this message I get to see that advertisement of "playing online games" It has been so frustrating and annoying to each time close that pop up.
My question is inspite of the option of blocking pop up windows enabled why do I get to see this advertisement. Can I some how stop this behavior. I use Lucid 64 bit and Firefox 3.6.10.

I noticed a problem when editing files with nano. This problem happens if the terminal window that I run nano from is not wide enough to show the full line.By way of example below is part of my grub.conf

If we assume the code box above is the size of the terminal window, if I edit anything past what will show as the $ sign in nano, it will automatically add a carriage return. So if we take the kernel line above, if say the screen shows at the end root=UUID=$, if say I were then to add 00 the end of the UUID, it will move everything starting from root=UUID= to a new line. Is there some wrap feature that is enable in Fedora for nano?
Before in 10.04 and previous, when I clicked on a window it was brought to the front. In 10.10 it doesn't, it accepts input but the other window over it stays over it until i click the windows top bar.

Now the problem is, after the creation of the profile its suppose to launch "first step" but now this windows appears blank and when i move the cursor around it picking the links..
When I click on System -> Preferences -> System Preferences it never opens. I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling from Synaptic but get the same result. This has only happened since I upgrade to 10.04. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

With it, I can add a shortcut menu and a Stack icon. From there,I can add applications, but they have a generic *.desktop icon. Is there any way to get the same Mac effect from Cairo Dock, or maybe even a shortcut to the applications folder in Ubuntu?By the way, can someone tell me the default path to the applications folder?"

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was looking for a duplicate file-finder that will allow me to delete the duplicate files directly from the program. After seeing several recommendations in this forum I installed Fslint from the repositories. It easily found the duplicate files that I needed to remove. The problem is, if I select a duplicate file and if I click on Delete at the bottom of the Fslint window, nothing happens. The duplicate files that I selected are not deleted.
I thought there might be something wrong with the repository version, so I downloaded the latest version of Fslint (v. 2.40-1), and I have the exact same problem. Fslint will not delete any files. Maybe Fslint is being interfered with by some other program. I am using Ubuntu 9.04.
I'm running Ubuntu Netbook on my laptop and have tweaked it by removing Window Picker and replacing it with NameBar. The only problem I have is that I can no longer double click the title bar to restore a maximized window. Is there any way to change this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the automated distro upgrade, and my resolution has been changed to 1024x768. I tried to go to System -> Preferences -> Display to see why this might be, but that entry is missing from my Preferences menu. I am using a Radeon HD 4200 video card, but I am not using any special video drivers right now. /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist.

Double-click the menu button on the top-left of the window to close it.It doesn't work for me right now in KDE, and I can't find any option to enable it. Googling gave a few hits of people requesting this feature in gnome, but no clear instructions on how to enable it in KDE or whether it's possible. (Though perhaps my Google-fu is just weak...)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to stop my left click from moving the window. This is not Meta + Left click but just simple Left click in the area marked with blue. It happens if I Left click drag on the Titlebar as well. I have tried setting 'Nothing' for Meta + Left click setting shown in the image but the behaviour continues.
Is this a bug or can I stop this somehow ?
on desktop, my mouse works normal. i can open programs normally, BUT, when i try to click inside some window, pointer turns into closed hand, that symbols dragging. i can move the window that way, but can't click anything except when holding shift, alt or ctrl.it's probably my fault, but i don't remember pressing anything different than usually. oh, and, it started in the middle of the session, i tried to reboot several times, tried recovery too, after that updated but no help there.i was looking for solution on google but can't find anything for days, i cant think of anything but reinstallation
