Ubuntu :: Don't Want To Restart Or Even Relogon For Such A Trivial \ Sometimes It Gets Stuck And Can't Update?
Jun 28, 2011
this is a minor but annoying problem and I hope maybe just a simple fix. I have a weather monitor in my top panel. Sometimes it gets stuck and can't update. How do I restart these little panel applets or whatever they are called? I don't want to restart or even relogon for such a trivial problem, but it is annoying. Not sure about the relogon, but I know a reboot fixes it. (running AMD64 bit lucid).

I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

been looking for a easy way for simple users (newbies) to share folders over the internet with friends. I found almost nothing about it, in both Windows and Ubuntu, as people usually recommend online sharing (as dropbox and Ubuntu One, which is not what I ask for) or ssh, ftp and related, which are usually not trivial to set up for simple user and you need to install a nice GUI for the client. Why isn't there a simple way as a right-click menu option, then choosing some user/password and having it available over some iport? Something like local network file sharing. This seems like an incredible tool to have.

My machine is running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04)
Code:
I installed the corresponding linux headers and just to make sure I also installed the linux source and extracted it in /usr/src
I am trying to run the following trivial kernel module

I am running Ubuntu Lucid on a machine (32 bit version). When I run apt-get update it gets stuck at 99%. I have also other variants running in Virtual box. (ubu student, mint-debian, Ubuntu Maveric). All the OS have this problem. Searched through the Debian bugtracker, they've had this problem at least since 2008. It seems that it worked until the update the other day I think it was last weekend at least on lucid If there is a connection problem at the server end shouldn't it at least time out or something giving you a message that it couldn't access the server, I mean it does but only if I hit cancel. Or control+c in the command line. How can one update if the update manager isn't working correctly?

I went to update manager about 4 days ago to check for updates, it downloaded all the new updates and while installing them, I remember I was doing something else at the same time and I am not sure if that is the problem that caused this, but the update manager since then gets stuck at applying changes almost in the middle right here with the cursor blinking:
Code:
Get:1 Changelog for ark (http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/k/kdeutils/kdeutils_4.6.2-

I've got a bog standard install of 10.04 LTS running as a mail server. An update has stalled on a "Configuring grub-pc" screen, the forward button does not move me forward? How can I resolve this situation? Seems like a bug in the update process?

I made the 'mistake' of telling Update Manager that I didn't want to install the Adobe Flash Player Plugin Version 10', when Update Manager offered me the option. Now it's still there, grayed out, I can't install it (what I want to do) or remove it from Update Manager.

Got the network settings set up, tried to open firefox - nothing, wouldn't load. went into update manager and started updating the software. The update manager got stuck on updating Grub, I left it to do it's thing while I slept hoping it would finish. I wake up, go back to his pc and it's still stuck on grub, not really anything I could do but shut down his pc and try again, well, his pc doesn't even want to load Ubuntu now. I tried booting up several times, then tried the restore option in the loader, but all I get is this: [URL]...

i was trying to install ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS on my dell latitude c800 and the install is hanging at "checking for packages to remove..." and i was wondering what steps followed this, and if any of the steps that follow this one are critical to the laptop functioning... so, is it safe to restart my laptop when the install is only at 96% ?

Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data

I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.

After lots of searching last night I noticed that over the last couple of days there have been quite a few posts of people receiving the error: no such device lots of numbers grub rescue>. I have a dual boot vista/ubuntu setup with ubuntu on my d: drive and windows on my c: drive and it happened to me last night. So after my freaking out when I received the grub rescue> error after updating somethings in my ubuntu install and restarting. Once the computer rebooted bam! error. after much freaking it only fixed itself by reinstalling the windows bootloader via the vista rescue disk I was wondering if there was a way to prevent this from happening again? will ubuntu attempt to "update" itself again?

Here is my problem: I am using ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installed on a HP tx2 1274nr laptop. I can get my wireless to work on both the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and the Broadcom STA wireless driver. Though only one can be active at a time.
My problem lies in I can activate either driver until I reboot the laptop. then it becomes inactive.
Is there a fix for this problem. I would like to have my wireless active after restarting.

I ran the automatic update today and it requested a restart afterwards. After the restart, I don't have any icons on my desktop, can't open windows other than the terminal. If I try to run software from the terminal, I get the following error.
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version 'GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version 'GCC_3.3' not found (required by /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6)
I have seen "just removed the library with an issue" or recreate the links or try to reinstall. I am running fedora 12.

So this very (for me) important little package fails me once again. But this time it refuses to restart/start
This is the output:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.3p1:-1)
Restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell Server: sshd: failed!
/dev/null is not a character device!
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.
[Code].....
The error is within the /etc/init.d/ssh script. ("error")
This is in squeeze so I can only blame my self, but.. This is one of the packages that fair and square should not fail to install/update/start/restart no mather what!

I am running Fedora 12 with KDE on an Acer Aspire One netbook.
A recent update has caused the KDE shutdown/restart/logout buttons (found for example through the Fedora -> Leave menu or by pressing the power off switch)to stop working. I am having to shutdown using shutdown -P now command.
So I have the following questions:
a) Has anyone else had this issue and knows a workaround/fix?
b) Does anyone know what package these belong to so I can try an older version?
c) Does anyone know where this package writes its logs, or if I need to install anything for it to do so so I can have a look?
d) Does anyone know the command-line interface to these commands - that may give me either a more gentle workaround than shutdown -P now, or some insight into why the command is no longer working.

I have just been told that httpd was not running on my Centos virtual server. It seems that my hosting company rebooted my server 2 days ago and that httpd restart failed due to:
Starting httpd: httpd:
Syntax error on line 213 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Syntax error on line 2 of /etc/httpd/conf.d/proxy_ajp.conf:
Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so: undefined symbol: proxy_module
I had worked around and forgotten about this some time ago. The problem arose because the most recent httpd update installed proxy_ajp.conf into /etc/httpd/conf.d which was then loaded on restart The trouble is I do not use mod_proxy (I think just to try and get a lean and mean web server) and proxy_ajp.conf does not check if mod_proxy is loaded before it tries to LoadModule proxy_ajp_module modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so
Hence httpd fails to restart. RedHats's bug tracker lists this as an old issue (which was never resolved) [URL] My workaround was to rename proxy_ajp.conf to proxy_ajp.conf.orig so that httpd would start up correctly. However any updates simply reinstall proxy_ajp.conf and so IMO the problem needs to be resolved at source. how to ensure that httpd updates do not bite me in the future? Do I really have to run mod_proxy whether or not I need it?
