Ubuntu Installation :: Slow Boot After Upgrade To 10.04 / Make It Up?

Nov 11, 2010

10.04 boasts a very quick boot time, but after upgrading, I've been having a much slower boot than in 9.10. It hangs at the screen when it says

Boot from (hd1, 0) ext3
Starting up...

It stays at this screen for a good 15 seconds before showing me the login screen. I've attached the results from a boot info script.

Ubuntu Installation :: Have Slow Boot After Upgrade To 10.04 / Solve It?

May 3, 2010

I just recently upgraded my kubuntu install from karmic to lucid and now it takes about 10-15 minutes to boot. Directly after the upgrade it was pretty slow already, but it got worse every day from then. The karmic version was a wubi install I moved to a dedicated partition using lvpm. Here are the results from the bootinfoscript code...

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into Vista After Upgrade To 10.4 / Make It Possible?

May 4, 2010

I upgraded my dual-boot (Vista/Ubuntu) system last night to 10.4. Everything had been working perfectly running karmic.

As I recall, during the upgrade process, something, I assume grub 2, asked for a list of boot devices and defaulted to selecting all devices, one of which was a non-bootable USB stick. I consented.

This returned some sort of error; I made a couple different choices selecting different drives until ultimately it accepted my choice and continued the upgrade process.

Once the upgrade completed, I could no longer boot into Vista. I now assume that one of the choices that I deselected was the dual-boot manager.

From what I can tell, all the Windows files remain intact, I just can't boot into Vista.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot (Blinking Cursor) With 10.04 Upgrade

May 3, 2010

I am getting a much slower boot with the 10.04 upgrade. After choosing which partition to use I get the blinking white cursor in the upper left hand corner and the "Boot from (hd0,4) ext 3..." sits there for a while before coming to the log in screen. There have been quite a few posts about this, a lot of people are saying disabling the floppy drive in the BIOS has worked for them. I don't have a floppy drive on my laptop.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot Time Since Upgrade To Natty?

I've seen this issue mentioned before, but it appears their cause was different than mine. Here is a snippet of my dmesg log:

I'm not exactly sure what that is or why that's causing it to take so long to do.

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Painfully Slow After Upgrade (Not DNS)

Jan 2, 2010

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, and Firefox is painfully slow to use. Changing between already loaded tabs takes almost a second. Scrolling through a loaded tab is also slow and jerky. Other programs (e.g. Thunderbird, or just browsing the filesystem) also seem slower when Firefox is running.

I'm running Firefox 3.5.6. My PC is Compaq Presario 2200 laptop (about four years old) with 768 MB RAM. As another data point, I also have the most recent version of Linux Mint installed on the same PC, running Firefox 3.5.3, with no problems. I've searched, and some problems have apparently been due to DNS problems, but I have problems when I'm offline (wifi physically removed), looking at webpages saved on my disk, which are already fully loaded, so it's not a DNS problem. I did try steps 1 - 7

Is there any boot parameters I can try to add when booting that might help?

Fedora Installation :: Boot From Installation DVD - Boot Process Doesn't Make It Even To Anaconda

Jun 15, 2009

I'm trying to install F11 on a machine that was running well under F10 just a few hours ago. I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

Ubuntu Installation :: Can Not Upgrade - Install / Make It Possible?

Feb 1, 2010

I am currently running a small headless home server with ubuntu 8.04. I have had it set up and running for a while, and once or twice a week, I will ssh in and do an apt-get update and upgrade. However, the last time that I tried to do this, I got disconnected from the wireless in the middle, and since then I have not been able to upgrade. code...

I get the same error, regardless of whether or not I try to upgrade, or install a new package. After searching the net, I have tried 'dpkg --configure -a' but get absolutely no output. I have deleted the .deb files and redownloaded them. I have tried to clean, autoremove and many others. I finally decided to connect the monitor to the server, and I found I had errors in my root partition. I booted with an ubuntu rescue disc, and ran fsck on the partition, and it found and corrected many errors. But after I reboot into the normal OS, all the errors come back. I am hoping that I don't have to reinstall the whole server, because I am happy with the set up that I have now. If it comes down to that, I guess I would probably have to put a new hard drive in it. Before I do that, I was hoping that someone on here might know of something I overlooked or didn't try. Maybe it is an easy fix, and I just haven't been able to find it yet.

Ubuntu Installation :: Really Slow Boot And No Reboot?

Jan 19, 2010

I have a desktop PC with an Intel 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 CPU. 1.5 Gb of RAM, and 2 - 200 Gb Seagate HDD (1 is Windows XP only, the other is NTFS and Ubuntu partitions). It is a dual boot system using GRUB, with Windows XP the first item on the menu.lst file, and the latest Ubuntu 9.10 kernel and previous kernels the following items.

My problems are twofold since I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 of Ubuntu. First extremely slow boot to Ubuntu (multiple minutes to get to the login screen and then almost the same after login). Over all it may take up to 5 minute to get to a usable Ubuntu running. Once I'm in to Ubuntu, things seem to be okay.

Second problem is when I reboot with the "restart" from the panel, the only way I can reboot to either Ubuntu or Windows XP is to physically turn off the power switch on the back of the computer. If I don't do this the machine never restarts it just tries to start and doesn't ever get to grub start up. After powering off, and then back on the normal reboot, with grub starting and giving the menu.lst options works fine.

Installation :: Slow Boot After Upgrading To Ubuntu 10.04 / Speed It Up?

Aug 12, 2010

First of all i would like to inform that I am new to Ubuntu. I had Ubuntu 9.04 install on my HP Pav. Laptop with Winxp. Before some days I upgraded it first to 9.10 and then to 10.04 as suggested in Ubuntu site. After the upgrade I found that the boot up is very slow. I heard and read that Ubuntu 10.04 has very fast booting but I don't experience that, though shutdown is faster.
I read many threads on this forum about slow booting and tried to resolve the issue using those, but nothing is working. I also installed bootchart and tried to get something out of it, but frankly saying I don't understand that chat . I have 1gb of ram.
I have attached the bootchart image. Please help to find the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Super SLOW LiveCD And Usb Boot?

Apr 22, 2011

I'm not a Linux noob, by any stretch, but this is driving me INSANE. I have an Acer Aspire 4320 laptop, and I'm trying to install 10.10 on it. The LiveCD, and the LiveUSB, take over 3+ HOURS to boot to a desktop. Then, it can't format the drive. Am I missing boot options (i.e. 'noapic') or something?

Do I set the drive in bios to ide or AHCI? (If set to ide, it takes ALOT longer..approx 45 min to get to the "run" or "install" screen) EDIT: I did manage ONCE to get to 'check this drive for errors', no killers found. (At the 'keyboard screen, I pressed 'space'). Do I need to add any other options here?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Slow Down Windows Side?

Oct 15, 2010

Just to make this clear after I installed Ubuntu 10.10 I downloaded everything and updated everything but when I booted into my Windows side I was shocked that the boot time was so freaking fast but after logging in the start up programs took about 10 minutes and I was able to use my windows after total of 15 minutes I know this is a lot the reason as I think is the GRUB file is actually slowing my windows because it doesn't want to harm my hard drive this is just a guess.

Debian Installation :: 2.6.32-5-amd64 Boot Fails - How To Make It Boot

May 27, 2011

My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.

Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

[3.816673] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to killl init!
Call trace:
get_empty_filp
panic

[code].....

Running it again I get similar stack stuff but it's a different place: [3.541816], [3.427502] And sometimes if I wait for a minute or two it will continue on further but appear to crash again. Hardware details (everything is onboard - no added cards):

G41M-S3
Intel G41 + ICH7 chipsets
CPU: LGA 775 for Intel Core 2 Extreme

[code]......

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
