I want to upgrade my kernel from version 2.6.38-10 to 3 I downloaded the kernel 3 from kernel.org by this command :wget url while i'm in /tmp directory
and i did these commands also
$ tar -xjvf linux-2.6.25.tar.bz2 -C /usr/src
$ cd /usr/src
till now everything is okay so now the next step as my manual
$ make gconfig
that's give me this result

I am following the instructions on Section 8.1.* Device Driver ConceptsHere I was able to proceed till section 8.1.4.After making the hello.c file,the make file and patching the Kconfig as mentioned,I tried to run the $ make ARCH=ARM CROSS_COMPILE=xscale_be- gconfig This gave error as:make: *** No rule to make target `gconfig'. I dont know how to put this that somobody would understand my problem but here we go. I have problem like said in title.I am unable to upgrade my kernel. Sunaptics says that I have 2.6.35-28 installed. I tried to reinstall 2.6.35-28 via synaptics but it gives me error.

I got a notification that there was an upgrade available today in ubuntu 9.10 64, after the update i restarted my system and while booting i encountered this error message:
Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,17)
does this have something to do with the OS looking at the wrong hd? theres no command prompt to actually do anything and i tried booting in safe mode and had the same problem. Let me know what i can do!
I cant boot into Fedora 10 using the latest kernel. It just hangs after grub, I can still boot into an older kernel. The problem is its a fresh install that I ran a full update on straight away, and now I cant install videoaudio drivers because the kernel-header packages (and others) are installed for the latest kernel. Is there any boot parameters I can try to add when booting that might help?
I'm simply trying to compile a vanilla kernel from Kernel.org, I've done it before, however "make menuconfig" returns an error after I've made my changes to the config file.

I was running 2.6.35 without any errors. I decided to upgrade to .4 today, used the same config. After i rebooted into the newly compiled kernel i got these errors on boot..

I did a complete disk check and it appears to be fine. Then i booted in the default kernel that comes with slackware 13.1 and walla..No errors! What could be the problem? Did someone experience the same issue?
Over the past few days I have been trying to install an older kernel (kernel 2.6.28.1) on ubuntu 9.10 64-bit WUBI installation. I compiled, installed, and updated my grub for the kernel. When I reboot, the grub menu correctly gives me the option of booting into the older kernel but when I do so I receive the following error message:
error: you need to load the linux kernel first.
I am at a complete loss on how to fix this. I even downgraded grub but I still get the same error.

I tried to install last Ubuntu distribution (11.04) in a laptop that fits setup requirements. I downloaded de Iso, burnt on cd and restart the laptop with the cd inside it.The hard disk does not have any partition, it's empty, I suppose installation gives that opcion.At the begining of the installation, before any interactivity, I get this error:

I installed the latest kernel liquorix (2.6.35) but when i want to install the Nvidia driver downloaded on the Nvidia website (256.53), i have an error message because Nvidia doesn't found the kernel source tree.
I install linux-image-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb, linux-headers-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb and build-essential. I don't understand why the installation doesn't works.

I am using ubuntu 8.04 and i am trying to make iso image cd with running kernel. i know that there is documentation in ubuntu website in"how to make live cd" but the thing is this is my custom kernel. i have my own configuration. so i want this kernel to be work in live cd.
What are the best ways to make the kernel using git, and localmodinfo. and optimizing the kernel the best way on a laptop I have, which is a desktop laptop, so it is never really unplugged. Has a core 2 duo 2.53Ghz, 4GB DDR3 RAM, and an ATI HD 3870 GPU.so what things other than the obvious core 2 cpu type when making the kernel. It's on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit. I also want to create it with the local mod info. and Also create this into a .deb package so it may be saved.
I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).
thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.
Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!
I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.
I am currently running a small headless home server with ubuntu 8.04. I have had it set up and running for a while, and once or twice a week, I will ssh in and do an apt-get update and upgrade. However, the last time that I tried to do this, I got disconnected from the wireless in the middle, and since then I have not been able to upgrade. code...
I get the same error, regardless of whether or not I try to upgrade, or install a new package. After searching the net, I have tried 'dpkg --configure -a' but get absolutely no output. I have deleted the .deb files and redownloaded them. I have tried to clean, autoremove and many others. I finally decided to connect the monitor to the server, and I found I had errors in my root partition. I booted with an ubuntu rescue disc, and ran fsck on the partition, and it found and corrected many errors. But after I reboot into the normal OS, all the errors come back. I am hoping that I don't have to reinstall the whole server, because I am happy with the set up that I have now. If it comes down to that, I guess I would probably have to put a new hard drive in it. Before I do that, I was hoping that someone on here might know of something I overlooked or didn't try. Maybe it is an easy fix, and I just haven't been able to find it yet.
I'm running 10.10 with an NVIDIA card which has a customised xconfig file (to allow use of an EDID file). This was working OK until I ran a set of security updates which included a kernel upgrade. Now when I try to boot the machine, it goes straight to terminal mode and will not run the GUI.
I recall seeing something about this before, but can't find the thread. It's a fairly simple fix to get the graphics running again, but I can't remember what the solution is.

I'm trying to make a 2.6.37.3 kernel using kernelcheck. I have custom compiled two previous kernels for maverick alone, so my .config it will load is optimized as I built with the localmodconfig option, and I have been using the 200 lines patch on my 2.6.35 kernels. I want to find the patch file that works on the 2.6.37 kernel for the 200 lines patch so I can optimize my speed, but the patch i found galbraith-patch is only for 2.6.36.
I upgraded my dual-boot (Vista/Ubuntu) system last night to 10.4. Everything had been working perfectly running karmic.
As I recall, during the upgrade process, something, I assume grub 2, asked for a list of boot devices and defaulted to selecting all devices, one of which was a non-bootable USB stick. I consented.
This returned some sort of error; I made a couple different choices selecting different drives until ultimately it accepted my choice and continued the upgrade process.
Once the upgrade completed, I could no longer boot into Vista. I now assume that one of the choices that I deselected was the dual-boot manager.
From what I can tell, all the Windows files remain intact, I just can't boot into Vista.
All ive had since i upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 s problems. After i upgraded and rebooted my machine, i logged in and the desktop would not load. Ive managed to sort that out but i cannot get compiz and emerald to work! I had it working perfectly before i upgraded
When i open compiz-fusion icon in the bar and change the desktop to compiz and emerald, the buttons on top of the window disappear and i cant do anything unless i change it back.
