Ubuntu Installation :: Can Not Upgrade - Install / Make It Possible?

Feb 1, 2010

I am currently running a small headless home server with ubuntu 8.04. I have had it set up and running for a while, and once or twice a week, I will ssh in and do an apt-get update and upgrade. However, the last time that I tried to do this, I got disconnected from the wireless in the middle, and since then I have not been able to upgrade. code...

I get the same error, regardless of whether or not I try to upgrade, or install a new package. After searching the net, I have tried 'dpkg --configure -a' but get absolutely no output. I have deleted the .deb files and redownloaded them. I have tried to clean, autoremove and many others. I finally decided to connect the monitor to the server, and I found I had errors in my root partition. I booted with an ubuntu rescue disc, and ran fsck on the partition, and it found and corrected many errors. But after I reboot into the normal OS, all the errors come back. I am hoping that I don't have to reinstall the whole server, because I am happy with the set up that I have now. If it comes down to that, I guess I would probably have to put a new hard drive in it. Before I do that, I was hoping that someone on here might know of something I overlooked or didn't try. Maybe it is an easy fix, and I just haven't been able to find it yet.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Into Vista After Upgrade To 10.4 / Make It Possible?

May 4, 2010

I upgraded my dual-boot (Vista/Ubuntu) system last night to 10.4. Everything had been working perfectly running karmic.

As I recall, during the upgrade process, something, I assume grub 2, asked for a list of boot devices and defaulted to selecting all devices, one of which was a non-bootable USB stick. I consented.

This returned some sort of error; I made a couple different choices selecting different drives until ultimately it accepted my choice and continued the upgrade process.

Once the upgrade completed, I could no longer boot into Vista. I now assume that one of the choices that I deselected was the dual-boot manager.

From what I can tell, all the Windows files remain intact, I just can't boot into Vista.

Ubuntu Installation :: Slow Boot After Upgrade To 10.04 / Make It Up?

10.04 boasts a very quick boot time, but after upgrading, I've been having a much slower boot than in 9.10. It hangs at the screen when it says

Boot from (hd1, 0) ext3
Starting up...

It stays at this screen for a good 15 seconds before showing me the login screen. I've attached the results from a boot info script.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Installation Error - Could Not Install '/var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.10.1-0

Mar 23, 2010

I was trying to update from 9.04 to 9.10.

During the installation, I kept getting tons of errors. Finally something came up saying that I had to abort the installation and it did some stuff. I tried running an application, but I got an error. So I restarted the system.

The normal screen came up where I had to choose the Ubuntu stuff (I'm new to Ubuntu) in the box. I noticed that it had gone to 8.10... which I had earlier before installing 9.04, which went great. So I chose the first on and the system failed to start. I rebooted and tried all the other options, but they all had errors. Now I'm booted to Windows.

I installed Ubuntu from a CD I created. But it is now outdated because it is 8.10, and I have already upgraded to 9.04. 9.04 to 9.10 is where stuff went wrong.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Flash-player In 10.10 At All / Make It Possible?

Nov 19, 2010

I've tried using synaptic, didn't work. Tried completely removing it with the synaptic and then installing it again using apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree. didn't work either.

I've looked around a lot and I have yet to find anything helpful.

In synaptic and in terminal i get this: "Sub-process usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code(1)"

I don't really know what it means.

I read somewhere i should locate libflashplayer.so and copy it to the chromum-browser folder (i use chromium) so i ran code...

So it seems it's already in the right place. So i tried using this code...

i also checked the about: plugins page in chromium. I found the option to disable/enable "VLC multimedia plugin" under which i found "video/flv - flash-video". it was already enabled.

Well, i just don't know what to do.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install / Make It Enable?

Dec 30, 2010

I have a very big problem here. First a little background information. I tried searching this forum but didn't find anyone with similar situation.

I have installed Ubuntu and it's variations many, many times on different computers, and once in my current desktop PC. Right now I am in a situation where I want to install Ubuntu 10.04.01 (or any version, really) but I cannot.

I have tried to install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, I have tried Ubuntu 10.04.1 and 10.10, I have tried to install with Wubi (currently running Windows 7 64bit), I have tried to burn the images to CD and created an USB installer, nothing works, it's always the same. Installer starts, I put in "Install Ubuntu", and the screen goes blank. Nothing but a white little cursor blinking in upper left corner of screen. And I cannot type in anything.

Previously I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed with Wubi, and it worked. Right now, nothing works. Anything helpful appreciated. I can provide some system info if needed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Blank Partition With Gparted And Install Lucid On It

Apr 30, 2010

how to upgrade my ubuntu 9.10 system. I would like to do a clean install of lucid, but I have way too many files. I have a big hard drive, so space was not a problem, and things got out of hand ^^ One thing you should know is that I have plenty of room for my files even if the drive was half it's size, so my idea is possible space-wise. (And I am prepared if this fails. I have backed up my stuff, but would like if it I didn't have to rely on that)

What I want to do is make a blank partition with gparted and install lucid on it. Then I want to keep it a dual boot just to make sure my hardware is working ok, then move my home folder to the new partition, make the lucid partition take the whole hard drive, and delete karmic. I do not want to upgrade because I messed up my install a lot while learning linux, so I really need to start over.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Will Not Install On USB Drive Or Upgrade From 9.04

Feb 12, 2010

I have two external USB Drives, a 100GB one and a 120GB. I run Ubuntu 9.04 with no fixed hard drives attached using the 100GB USB Drive. I have no issues what so ever with this configuration. When installing I simply had no fixed hard drives attached. Plugged in the 100GB USB Drive. Booted from the Ubuntu 9.04 CD and pointed to the 100GB USB Drive to perform the install on. After install completed removed the Ubuntu 9.04 CD. Booted from the 100GB USB Drive and Ubuntu 9.04 was up and running.

Had been running Ubuntu 9.04 off the 100GB USB Drive for months with no fixed hard drives attached for months with no issues. Then Ubuntu 9.10 was available. So I upgraded. After upgrade completed when it booted all kinds of errors displayed and it would not function at all. So I simply reinstalled from the Ubuntu 9.04 CD as described above. Was up and running on Ubuntu 9.04 again with no issues.

Then I went ahead and bought a 120GB USB Drive to experiment with Ubuntu 9.10. Booted with the Ubuntu 9.10 CD and installed to the 120GB USB Drive with no fixed hard drives attached. During the install there are no issues. But once I try to boot from the 120GB USB Drive with Ubuntu 9.10 once again all kinds of errors are displayed and it just wont function. Ubuntu 9.04 will run on a USB Drive with no fixed hard drives attached. (Been doing this for months) I have also done this with prior versions of Ubuntu. So what is the difference between Ubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu 9.10 that would cause this? In the future when there is a new release of Ubuntu will it support run on a USB Drive with no fixed hard drives attached?

Or am I stuck with running Ubuntu 9.04 if I want to continue running Ubuntu on a USB Drive with no fixed hard drives attached? BTW: My 100GB USB Drive still has Ubuntu 9.04 installed in it. My system is continuing to run like a champ with Ubuntu 9.04 with no fixed hard drives attached using the 100GB USB Drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Do Partial Clean Install Rather Than Upgrade

Apr 14, 2010

I have a compaq nx7010. It started out with 8.04 or perhaps 8.10. I upgraded it through to 9.04 when that became available. I have not upgraded to 9.10 year, because I recall it took me a fair amount of time to get my system working correctly after the 9.04 upgrade. At a guess, audio went down, wifi broke, and that sort of thing. I am now finding that apps I use are not releasing new versions compatible with 9.04. And I see 10.04 is on its way, and I understand it is best to go from one upgrade to the next rather than jump a release.

Here's my question:
I get the impression it is cleaner and more stable to do a clean install as opposed to an upgrade. I've also seen many people expressing that view. I've always just gone with upgrading because I didn't like the thought of having to set my whole computer up the way I like it, again. Is there a way to do a clean install that will keep my system the way I like it? For instance, to not have to reconfigure every application?

I have my partitions set up like this:
ext3 /home
ext3 /
linuxswap

Just how much config related stuff is stored in the /home folder? Or is this purely user files? What is the consensus? Is it better to upgrade or to do a clean install? My intention is to have a stable system that does not require hours of my time to get sound and wifi working, with the latest release on it (so that I can run the latest apps).

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 9.10: Failed To Install Kernel?

The System Monitor says:
Release 9.10 (karmic)
Kernel Linux 2.6.28-19-generic

Everything I have read says that 9.10 includes kernel 2.6.31. So I am afraid to reboot now.
