View 2 Replies View RelatedI have gone through many threads but most of them have been dead for many time and I think there would have been a few advances in the Ubuntu software domain, so maybe a new downloader is up which manages downloads in a better way.Well, those who have used Internet Download Manager know that it is one of the best ones offered for Windows. It has many useful functions available in one single domain.
- It integrates to all browsers damn well, like charm.
- It can manage rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile and similar file hosting services very smoothly.
- It is a multi-threaded downloader which means that before starting to download file it breaks it up in many small pieces, and then downloads all fragments side by side, making the download very very fast, even on slower connections.
- It can also do very well with the websites which do not permit multithreaded downloading from their servers.
- It can take on video downloads from any page on the web which has a streaming video.
- It is very stable (if bought legitimately, which is not true in most cases ). But quite stable in even when not registered or cracked.
- Above all, it has a smart gui interface which provides interactive operations on downloaded files.
I have used many downloaders for Ubuntu and there has been some problem with each one. Some have a nice CLI structure but not GUI. Some of them are not multi-threaded. Some are multithreaded but do not allow pausing and continuing downloads (which actually does not satisfy the very definition of download managers). I haven't seen a single download manager which is GUI, multithreaded and well integrated to browsers all at the same time. What I want to know is, do my friends here at Ubuntu galaxy want to point out a real shiny star here which would make me forget the damn propriety software? Or if such a downloader hasn't been built yet, why not let's build one... Shouldn't be too hard especially if we have a model example (IDM 5.18 for Windows) in front of us... Well the algorithm must be simple, get address, verify the existence of file, break apart into several pieces and start downloading. I don't know how to implement this algorithm yet, but I am a quick learner and if a few expert programmers join me, we can do something that would remove one complain for most Ubuntu users.
Where can i find download manager for Fedora 14 similar to Internet Download Manager for windows
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I need a download manager that can pause download whenever there is a network interruption, keeps pinging to check if the network is back on.. and then continues file download seamlessly.
Though this feature seems basic to download managers, so far I ve never seen it working well in Linux at all... I live in a place where voltage fluctuations and thereby internet disconnection is common, around this time of the year.. So I am desperate for a nice download manager. I had seen 'Star downloader' in Win XP work like a charm. But Kget and Gwget drive me nuts.. As soon as the internet is down, Gwget keeps displaying the same download speed and 'Retrieving...' status and. I need to keep checking in and resuming download.
I have used windows xp in which there was useful software called internet download manager (called IDM) which segments the file while downloading so multiple different parts of same file get downloaded simultaneously decreasing time taken to download. Now I have ubuntu 8.04 & I use wget which is fine (because I love commandline) but I think it downloads file serially. Is there any software which acts like IDM ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just unwrapped my new netbook. Its got the new Atom N450 processor and the first thing I want to do is get XP home off of it. I'm just wondering if I should install 9.10 full or download the "netbook edition". Whats the difference? Will I see better performance with the netbook or full edition? (just asking because I'd like to avoid the ~650mb download if I can)
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.
i dont have any problems, everything is running fast and smooth, just wondering what other people think,

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince the DVD is only 4.7GB and missing some stuff (e.g. pvm) I decided to download the network install /oss folder for openSUSE 11.2 so that I can install multiple copies locally and keep my bandwidth usage down.
I've downloaded the full /oss folder using wget -r and wget -cr during my ISP's free bandwidth slot (12-8am - and it took 2 sessions to get it all).Wget didn't throw up any errors so why the difference? Is there any (simple) way I can check the integrity of the download?
the thread title says pretty much everything. I don't know when it stopped working, but when I click on in using the MintMenu, nothing happens. I have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.
I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?
I recently decided that I want to install mplayer on fedora 13. Problem is, everytime I try, a new problem arises. I've tried add/remove software, and it said "package download failed, check internet connection" which doesn't make sense because I'm connected to the internet and my connection is fine. So, then I tried yum install mplayer, that gave me an error.

Into version 5.1 don't exist this option. I need to find packages like network-manager.... and all relatives and install in 5.1 in correct order to success.
I am a first time Linux user and have recently installed Linux Mint onto my dell inspiron 1525. When i connect the Ethernet cable to my computer the two computers symbol in the bottom right hand corner starts searching for a connection, but unfortunately does not find one. it says "no network connection". one thing that is strange to me but might not be to you is that i have installed fedora 12, 10, and 6, and all distros had the same exact problem. i take the cable out of the laptop with Linux and put it back in my desktop with xp pro and it works fine.also my wireless 1395 card isn't recognized but thats an entirely different pain in the *** ill work on one problem at a time..

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using the default GNOME file manager. But as a user I don't have any privileges to move files to/from the user folders to the system. I elevated my user to admin privileges, but this has no effect; I can't do any file management in the system area.
I can use the 'root terminal', but it would be much easier to use a GUI file manager--even drag 'n drop. How do I get the file manager to open up? I guessed one way to do this is to log in as 'Root' instead of user. But login won't allow an 'other' login when I try to use 'root' as a username. Is this the wrong approach? Dave
I recently installed Fedora 11 onto my computer on top of Linux Mint. Originally I was using Mint's bootloader, but I'm ditching Mint soon for another OS so I'm migrating to Fedora's bootloader to make the transition easier. For a while I couldn't get Mint to appear on Fedora's Grub menu, but during that time I could still access the internet on Fedora. However, once I successfully added Mint to Fedora's grub menu, the wireless suddenly stopped working on Fedora (though it still works on Mint.) I can connect to the network on Fedora but it gives me the awesome "host does not exist" message when I try to ping anything. Any insight as to why this might have happened after I managed to successfully boot Mint from the Fedora boot menu?

I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"
