Ubuntu Installation :: Re-install NetworkManager FromCD?

Jun 3, 2011

I installed 10.10 and ran it for a few weeks and then (foolishly) installed Wicd and tried it and it failed. So I had no network connection. Can I re-install NetworkManager from the 10.10 CD? Or is there something else I can try in order to restore wifi access?

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Does Not Autostart In NetworkManager (Lucid) After Kernel Upgrade

Jun 18, 2010

Recently, I installed a fresh 64bit Lucid Lynx on my Lenovo B450 laptop (previously on Mint8 64bit, based on Karmic). It's been really nice and speedy except for one thing - USB transfers to thumb drives and external hard drives were really slow (just like in the older Ubuntu releases). I had found some forum discussions on a fix to this by way of a kernel upgrade so I decided to go for it.

Went ahead and downloaded the kernel DEBs from [URL] and installed them. Voila! USB speed issue was fixed! Everything else seemed to work fine, except for some minor troubles with burning CDs and DVDs (I think I need to upgrade the drive's firmware - pretty bad situation as the update only runs on Windows).

However, the one 'bug' or 'annoyance' I noticed straight away was that my wireless wouldn't autostart after booting into the OS with the new 2.6.34-020634-generic (x86_64) kernel. I'd have to right-click on the NetworkManager icon on the notification tray and left-click '[ ] Enable Wireless' to flag the checkbox and my wireless would come right up and work ok (WPA2 at home, WEP at the office). Not a major problem, but this has been pretty irritating to say the least.

OpenSUSE Install :: Configure WiFi On The Command Line With NetworkManager Or Ifup?

Mar 24, 2011

I had to uninstall a proprietary ATI driver because it wrecked my X server. Apparently I removed the wrong package, because now the X server won't even start, even with the "nomodeset" flag.

QUESTION 1.How can I configure WiFi on the command line with NetworkManager or ifup, whichever is easier?

QUESTION 2.Which packages do I need to download to restore the X server?

OpenSUSE Install :: Broke Gnome In 11.2 - Connect To The Internet Via Networkmanager And Couldn't Get Wifi Or Wired To Work

Apr 27, 2010

I was having a problem with cairo dock, asked on the board how to resolve was told to reinstall the visual driver for my monitor since I have an ati vid card since with the updated kernal u have to reinstall those drivers(didn't know that, I'm new to opensuse). I thought I did that before so I completely uninstalled it so I could then do a fresh reinstall but I wasn't paying attention and my laptop was unplugged for a while. I stepped away while the install was going on and my laptop died.

I tried plugging it in but had to restart my laptop when I did I got the command line rows and when I tried to start GDM it wouldn't start, I did so as SU. Attempted to connect to the internet via networkmanager and couldn't get wifi or wired to work. Anyway I can access my desktop visually just so I can start yast and install the driver or will I have to reinstall 11.2 or use the cd to repair? If so how do I use the cd to repair?

Ubuntu :: No NetworkManager Icon After Rebooting?

May 17, 2010

I've noticed that there's no Network Manager icon on my notification area after rebooting, no matter how many times I delete my GNOME panel configuration and restore the defaults. However, after rebooting, if I restart the D-Bus service (and thus my whole desktop), the NM icon does appear - even though NetworkManager is not running. I've already tried reinstalling gnome-panel, network-manager, and dbus, which hasn't changed anything.

How can I make the NM icon appear every time I log in?

Ubuntu Networking :: Networkmanager Not Giving WPA Passphrase

Feb 21, 2010

I've set-up a Linksys WPC54G v5 wireless card using ndiswrapper and the appropriate Marvell driver. It seems to work ok. On my other laptop running Kubuntu with built-in wireless the routing all works fine - I just get prompted by Network Manager for the WPA passphrase and I'm away. However, when I try to connect to my wireless router on thix Xubuntu-based laptop I get really odd security options.

When I try to connect I get a security prompt asking me for a bewildering array of information. There are four basic authentication options under "WPA & WPA2 Enterprise": TLS, LEAP, Tunnelled TLS and Protected EAP. None of those offers a simple passphrase, they all have some combination of username & password with certificates and keys. If I try to connect to other networks in my area, some do just ask for a WPA passphrase, not that I know them to check!

Ubuntu Networking :: No AP In NetworkManager With Broadcom BCM4306 (B43)?

Apr 24, 2010

I have problems with my Broadcom BCM4306 (rev 03) on my HP nx6110ng Karmic.NetworkManager does not list any AP, even if there should be some. It did work for some days without problems, but suddenly stopped working. I made a kernel update with the update manager, but I am not sure if this caused the probem (I also used the wired connection, so I don't exaclty know when wireless stopped working). Reinstalling fwcutter wasn't successful. So I tried as suggested in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...oadcom_BCM4306 and added the following lines to /etc/rc.local

modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb
modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip

Ubuntu Networking :: Accidentally Disabled Networkmanager

May 27, 2010

Using kubuntu 10.04, I accidentally disabled networkmanager on startup for one of the users of my system. This user now has to manually start networkmanager each time after logging in. How can I make kde run networkmanager automatically again? How this happened: when I started a parallel session as an other user, while already connected via networkmanager in my own profile, kde detected this and asked something along the lines of "There's already a networkmanager running, run networkmanager automatically in the future?" Since I was a little confused, I clicked "no", and that's how things are ever since. I thought there would be some system setting that would allow me to restore this setting, but I haven't found it yet...

Ubuntu :: [Maverick] Empathy Won't Connect Without Networkmanager?

Oct 14, 2010

just did a clean install and update to Maverick, and found that empathy won't connect without internet connection managed by networkmanager (I'm using wvdial to connect to the internet since networkmanager doesn't recognize my modem). it keeps saying 'Offline -- No Network Connection' unless I deactivate and reactivate the account. It's kinda annoying.

for Lucid, there is a simple fix for this condition, [URL]... but now, there is no entry for empathy in gconf-editor after I did the Maverick fresh install.

is there anybody have the same problem and know the solution? I can just install pidgin, but I think it is better to not having redundant apps installed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using NetworkManager For BT - Cell Phone Tethering?

Mar 17, 2010

What I currently do is run this script -

Code:
rfcomm release 0
CHANNEL = `sdptool search --bdaddr=00:21:FE:A5:C9:4A dun | grep Channel | cut -c14`
rfcomm bind 0 00:21:FE:A5:C9:4A ${CHANNEL}
wvdial e71bt
And my /etc/wvdial.conf is configured for AT&T connection here in the US.

Question is, is there anyway I can integrate it with NetworkManager, instead of having to run this script?

There's a "Broadband" option on NetworkManager, but I am not able to get it to recognize my cell phone as a modem. The bluetooth applet only allows for file transfer
