Ubuntu :: How To Temporarily Disable NetworkManager

Aug 12, 2010

I'm looking to temporarily disable NetworkManager while I configure some things in a shell. It's interfering by auto-reconnecting and using the network interface in the process. I've tried killing the process but that just seems to disconnect the network not kill the NetworkManager applet. I don't want to uninstall, and I don't want to have it disabled on startup. I just want to "close" it or "turn it off" temporarily! How can I do this? Also, I'm using 10.04

Ubuntu :: Temporarily Disable Shortcuts On The Desktop ?

Dec 14, 2010

I'm currently trying to learn how to get around Blender, but I keep running into the same problem. Blender relies heavily on shortcuts and keystrokes to navigate it's GUI, but very often they clash with the shortcuts on my desktop. The result is that the desktop shortcut wins, making Blender impossible to use effectively.

Is there any way to disable the desktop shortcuts temporarily while using the software, and then setting them back when I'm done?

OpenSUSE Network :: Disable Connection In Networkmanager?

May 2, 2010

I just tested Networkmanager on OpenSuSE 11.2. I tried with my wired connection and it works.

I thought I test to connect with network sharing with my Android phone. The Android phone connects according to Networkmanager, but I'm not sure if it actually works as the wired connection is still active.

I tried to figure out how to disable the wired connection, but eventually gave up and just pulled the wired network plug.

But surely, there must be a way to disable connections from Networkmanager?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install JDK - Resource Temporarily Unavailable

Mar 25, 2010

I have had ubuntu installed for a few months now and have been loving it. Yesterday I wanted to get JDK installed for a found a forum that said how to install it on ubuntu. The installation was not a success (I am not sure why because I am not skilled when it comes to the command line and I didn't understand the error). Later, I tried to install a different application just through the ubuntu software center and it said it was waiting for a different software manager to finish. I didn't understand what was still running because I had all other applications closed that I know of.

Once I restarted the problem was the same. Then I found a bug where people had the same problem with the software manager and they entered this and fixed it:
sudo dpkg --configure -a Now whenever I try to apt-get anything I get:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Temporarily Unmanaging A Specific Interface?

Aug 6, 2011

As part of my job, I have to configure a lot of network devices that are configured through web pages. This generally means plugging in to them via ethernet, going to their default IP address and reconfiguring them. I set my IP address using ifconfig, which is much faster than plugging numbers in to networkmanager's GUI. The problem is, NetworkManager seems to take the interface down at random.I could disable NetworkManager but then I don't have a wireless connection. Is there a way to tell NetworkManager to temporarily ignore what is happening on a specific interface or should I just ditch NM altogether when doing this kind of work and use wpa_supplicant to get on my wireless? My co-worker with the Windows machine is looking over my shoulder and chuckling

But not the case this time...I resume compositing, and try my desktop effect shortcuts, but nothing happens and it comes up saying for me to press Alt+Shift+F12 to resume the compositing again. I do that, but still nothing, and I even re-apply the desktopct settings completely and restart the computer and it comes up saying that none of them were activated or something in the notifications pop-up on the bottom right of the screen. I thought I downloaded the right files (OpenGL??) from the repositories along with basically anything I thought would make it work.

OpenSUSE :: Mc Hangs Temporarily When Network Is Down?

Mar 3, 2011

Midnight Commander startup is usually instantaneous, but when the network (eth0) is down, mct takes over a minute to start. This is a known problem. See:#40 (savannah: MC doesn't open if network gateway inaccessible.) (07 Jan 2007)for example. The problem seems to be caused by mc's use of samba. Is there a known solution or circumvention? The above file advises me to "comment out the eth0 interface from the smb.conf "; however, my /etc/samba/smb.conf seems to have no eth0 interface. The "man mc" file mentions that "smbfs" is one of the virtual file systems used internally by mc. I tried reducing the "vfs" timeout in the ".mc/ini" file from 60 to 5, but this had no effect on the startup time.

Ubuntu :: Temporarily Copy Data Before Growing RAID0 Array?

Feb 1, 2011

I currently have two hard drives, with my root partition configured in RAID0. I'd like to add two additional hard drives, and include them in my RAID0 array. I need to recreate the array to do this, so I'd like to copy everything off of the existing array, add the drives, build the new array, and copy everything back. I have an external hard drive with four times the capacity of my current array. What would be the best way to copy this data so that nothing is missed, so I can just copy everything back and boot back up? dd, image the entire root partition, mount it after creating the new array, copy everything back (at the filesystem level) dd, image the entire root partition, write it back out to the new array, I'm not sure how this would work, because the partition will be the wrong size, I don't know much about dd. rsync, just rsync everything on root over to the external something else? I plan on booting to a live CD and mounting my current array there, so I won't be working on a live filesystem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Only Temporarily Connects On Asus EEE 1000HE?

Jul 4, 2011

I've got an Asus EEE 1000HE, and it's worked fine for a long time with the EEEBUNTU distro (a distro based on Jaunty (i think) with a custom kernel). Unfortunately, Eeebuntu is no longer maintained, so I recently did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.2. I am now unable to get my wifi to work reliably.

The wifi tries to connect for a while, then pops up the "Wireless Network Authentication Required" window. If I hit "connect" it will try again for a while, then pop up the window. Etc. Note I know that my connection information is OK. I haven't mistyped the password (see below). Also note that the wifi antenna is turned on. For example, iwlist scan is able to find my network.

There is a weird twist though: The netbook is always able to connect through an ethernet cable on eth0 just fine. If I boot the netbook with the ethernet cable plugged in, the wifi instantly connects as well! I can then unplug the ethernet cable (eth0 goes away), but I am still able to use the wifi connection for about 5 minutes before it disconnects, and goes back to trying and failing to connect.

This behavior is 100% replicable--the wifi always works fine (for about 5 minutes) if it boots with the ethernet cable plugged in. Very rarely, the wifi will also connect on boot without the ethernet cable, but that is not replicable.

Other EEE netbooks seem to have issues with multiple wireless drivers, like in this thread. Perhaps something similar is happening here? My card seems to be using rt2860sta as a driver. I tried blacklisting it, to see if another driver was trying to load instead, but that just negated my wifi altogether. (It's unblacklisted again)

My router is a very reliable Linksys WRT54GL with factory firmware which has never been flaky.

I'm at my wit's end. This netbook will be useless without wifi.

Below is the suggested information for a first post:

Here's lspci (note there is nothing listed as "Wireless Brand" to grep out):

Code:
lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
