Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Setup Error - Failed To Add Entry For User
Jun 20, 2010
I am trying to set up my Ubuntu 10.04 netbook to see my WinXP desktop's files and vice a versa. I followed the steps in this tutorial thread: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows. I got as far as "Time to add yourself as an samba user." at this point I keep getting the following error:
Code:
sudo smbpasswd -L -a WinXP_User_Name
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Failed to add entry for user WinXP_User_Name.
My WinXP machine has no password.
My conf file is here:

I have a new server with AMD Opteron (first time, other server has intel) and slackware 13.1 32 bit installed.
kvm (qemu-system-x86_64) did not start with this error:
kvm: vm entry failed with error 0xffffffff
kvm_run returned -22
Got new kernel from slackcurrent (2.6.35.10) and rebuild qemu tools (qemu-kvm from SlackBuild).
Now kvm starts but I have another issue:
The virtual machine (I take a working image from another server) starts, shows the initial lilo message, "Loading linux ....", "BIOS data check succesfull ..." and then hungs with a black screen.
The command line is:
/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -hda /tmp/elezioni-ter.qcow2 -m 512 -localtime -k it -vnc 10.2.0.39:1
If I add the '-no-kvm' at the command line the vm boots ok.

I have been having off and on issues with my samba file shares. I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. I get the error:

It's been awhile since I posted anything which is a good sign my install has been working well and I have been able to handle most everything. However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.

I ran "yum update" on 03-06-2009 and it updated my samba version from
3.2.8-0.26.fc10.x86_64
to
3.2.11-0.30.fc10.x86_64
My network shares then became read only!After some digging it turns out my system is not working because of Samba bug 6291, the "force user" option is no longer working.
Ideally I would run another "yum update" and that would fix the problem. Apparently the bug has been fixed in Samba 3.4.0pre2 - when can when we expect that to be released and included when I do a "yum update"?
Alternatively how do I get back to version 3.2.8-0.26.fc10.x86_64 ?

I am trying to set up a windows file server using fedora 14 with samba. when I go to the a windows machine I can log in the the samba server. When I try to go to the folder I need access to I get and error saying "you might not have permission to use this network resource" I am trying to access my home directory. Directory /home/mike, username mike. As far as I can tell it is not a permission of the directory. I have a user set up in samba that uses the mike user account.

I'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx, full encryption with LUKS on my Eee 1005HA. Since yesterday, after booting, the only "X" is can see is the mouse cursor above a console-like text, saying:
Code:
(process_290) GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
init: ureadahead main process (410) terminated with status 5
fsck [clean, blah bla, check deferred, on battery]
[code]....
So, I googled for the getpwuid_r thing. I found a blog saying to install nscd (did so) and run it. But: To my inconvenience, after every booting, I have to switch to console 1, log in, run "sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart" and then "sudo restart gdm".

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

I need to access a Linux box via SSH & Samba that is hidden/connected behind another one on its own local network.
Setup :-
Code:
A switch B C
|----| |---| |----| |----|
|eth0|<-->| |<-->|eth0| | |
|----| |---| |eth1|<-->|eth1|
|----| |----|
E.g., I need to SSH/Samba from A to C. How does one go about this? I was thinking that it cannot be done via IP alone? Or can it? Could B say "hi on eth0, if your looking for 192.168.0.2, its here on eth1"? Is this NAT? This is a large private network, so what about if another PC has that IP?! More likely it would be PAT?
A would say "hi 192.168.109.15:1234"
B would say "hi on eth0, traffic for port 1234 goes on here eth1"
How could that be done? And would the SSH/Samba demons see the correct packet header info and work??
IP info :-
Code:
A - eth0 - 192.168.109.2
B - eth0 - 192.168.109.15
- eth1 - 192.168.0.1
C - eth1 - 192.168.0.2
A, B & C are RHEL (RedHat)
But Windows computers can be connected to the switch. I configured the 192.168.0.* IPs, they are changeable. So I have read that this should be done via iptables? But what is the correct command line to do this? And where does one put permanent iptable config?

I'm trying to setup two samba shares on ubuntu server 10.04.1 lts x64
The first is a Read-Only share for windows users that doesn't require a password. This i've managed to do so far.
The second is a Password protected Upload share. So far I am able to have both shares (which access the same directory) but am unable to log in to the pass word protected share.
I know i'm not doing things quite right, and would like a little bit of help
The smb.conf file is the default ubuntu file with these added shares:
Code:
[NAS]
Comment = Network Attached Storage
path = /media/RAID/NAS
browseable = yes
[Code].....

Here's the situation: I have the newest release of Ubuntu running in dual mode with a constantly failing Windows XP. I installed with GRUB and had no issues, but wanted to have access to the Windows files from Ubuntu (it did a logical partition and I couldn't locate any of the Windows files), allocate more space to Ubuntu and make the dual mode more efficient. Last night, I read up on how to do these things, went to GParted to briefly look at how the partitioning process would work. I believed that I took no action, shut down, and now the computer won't boot. It brings up the HP load screen with the Boot Device Menu and ROM Based Setup but immediately goes to a black screen with a flashing white bar. I tried restoring my defaults in the BIOS and I tested the RAM and HDD, each failing to resolve my issue. I'm assuming that whatever I've done is keeping the computer from knowing where to boot from.

I would like to create a dedicated Samba print server. I have two printers on my LAN, one printer came with its own NIC and the other is on a Win server box. I would like to setup Samba so that I can just access that server (Samba printer server) and both network printers will show up on there for me to connect to. On that note, can I also load the drivers on my Samba server? Drivers for different Windows flavours and also Mac OSX drivers.

The goal is the following: I want one samba network share with all my family data. Multiple users should have access to this share from Win7 pcs but not all folders should be access able by everyone. The old windows server managed this by changing ntfs rights for these folders.
I've installed Samba and this recommended gnome utility (Ubuntu 10.4). First for testing I made a samba share with access right for everyone. Everything fine on Win... Then I only allowed for my user. Also worked after a little bit of playing with the global samba settings and the pw encryption... Then I created a new ubuntu user and configured a new samba user with the connection to this ubuntu user (like described in many tutorials using the samba config tool). I changed the access right of the samba share to allow the new user also but no connection was possible. At this point the original user was working from the same pc without any problem.
I started thinking of the windows time and decided to search for the file system rights like it was with the ntfs. I'm using ext4 by the way. I made chmod 777 -R from the new users login... (i'm not sure why there is no user dependency for chmod) I used chown -R but it seems that there is only one owner allowed so I switched back to my main user... I installed an additional feature called ACL and was able to set users and groups for the root folder but there is no possibility to recursively change all subdirs. I used such a ACL gui extension for gnome which is in the ubuntu repository to do that. It also wasn't helping for the problem that the new user has no access to the folder (even if I change the rights manually)
User A & B have access rights at least for the root of the share. Both users have a ubuntu and a samba account. Only user A is working with samba.

I've spent the last four hours trawling through the net looking for a solution to this. I know it's out there, I just can't find it. In Ubuntu 10.10 I have just created a windows network in Samba. I can see the network and my computer. The computer next to me can also connect to this Windows network. He can also see the network and he can also see me, but... How does he join the network so that I can see him? I just can't seem to add him.

I have been using Ubuntu sense about 6.10 and never had to network with a Windows computer before. I have a decent understanding of Linux itself but I am having issues with this samba client. I have a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and am trying to use samba to access my shares on a Windows XP(SP3) computer. I am on the network just fine, and all the computers on the network have static IP addresses. When I go to Places->Network->Windows Network I see the "TITANNET" workgroup, (Even before I changed my workgroup to "TITANNET" in the smb.conf file.), but when I try to access it I get this error:
Code:
Unable to mount location
Failed to retrieve share list from server.
P.S.[0] I tried using /etc/init.d/samba restart but it did not work, I am not sure I am even running the samba server. (Well, it is obvious I am not, what I really mean is what am I running to (not =D)access the shares on my Windows PC.)
P.S.[1] I know that this has probably been posted before. I have searched and searched, I am about 1.5 pots of coffee and 4 hours into this.

I have a Samba server running on a box where I login to admin as user:
FRED
The Samba users are
SUE
JOE - Read only for specified paths (media playback access only user)
SUE can read/write to any directory under the share: Media
So all that is working fine. As long as I do file operations remotely as SUE everything works remotely. How can I make it to where everything SUE does over Samba FRED automatically has permissions to edit when logged in locally (or SSH)? Also, remember, Joe needs to be able to read where specified.
