Ubuntu and windows 7 were running in harmony prior to a reinstallation of windows 7. Earlier i would get a screen where i could select either windows or ubuntu to boot from. Now, however, my system seems to bypass that completely.

I have one hard drive with windows XP on it. Another with Ubuntu. As it stands there is no link between them. Is it possible to create a dual boot using these disks? - I do not want to reinstall any of them.
Preferably, I would like the boot choice (or booter? - not really sure what I'm talking about) to be on the newer Ubuntu drive.
It is on an old machine with 256MB Ram. So slow in fact, I'm going to change the desktop environment to Xubuntu - but that's mostly irrelevant.
As I understand it, I should make the Ubuntu drive master, XP as slave... but then what?
i have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.
I am new user (or not yet) of ubuntu and this forum . I installed ubuntu via wubu instaler as program of windows xp but I cant run it . I dl-ed ubuntu made live cd , booting from dvd-drive is working normally , and my instalation via wubu was fine . Now when I start my pc choice is shown to me on desktop :

But I cant make choice coz windows aint reacting on keyboard . Cant use my arrows to make choice . I got stuck here , I would like to install ubuntu as main OS but I think it is too early since I am newb and just started to learn pc science and programing . I hope to use it just as Windows program at the beggening .Later when I get used to it and learn how to properly install it as partition for itself I will do so .
i'm trying to intall an old etch debian release using the netinstall netinstall debian-40r9-i386-netinst.iso. But i've got an issue while configuring the miror. Right, so I downloaded first the ISO for ubuntu here: [URL]
And then proceeded to downloading the windows installer here: [URL]
However after "Successfully" Installing, I do not get a choice to boot from ubuntu on start-up...
I have tried several things;
Re-installing - To no effect Downloading EasyBCD, which tells me that I have No BCD file, and when I opened my Boot.ini file, it was blank... Also, there is no folder C:Boot....
Now I don't know what to do and am scared to re-start just incase it doesn't boot to anything...
I just upgraded to 10.10 and now I am faced with a choice at boot up of which kernel I would like to boot (or recovery mode, or memtest).I am wondering how to default to the newest kernel without this prompt.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using Ubuntu 9.10, until I got a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT). After I got that upgrade, Ubuntu no longer supported that card for some reason, so I decided to try Linux Mint since it was a close relative to Ubuntu. Still no support for the video card.
I've always wanted to try Fedora so I decided to grab the x86_64 live cd and burn it. I stick it into my disk drive and it boots where it shows me the options to "Boot" "Verify and Boot" "Boot from Hard Disk" and one other option.
I tried the Boot option, and after selecting that, everything stalls, and my display turns off (not the entire monitor, just the display). I tried Verify and Boot, and still no luck.
I have also tried the i686 live cd and the same issue. It can not be the way I am burning it, cause I've gotten other live cd's to work with the same method of burning. Is it that Fedora does not support the card?
I am trying to get the GNOME version up and running.
I just attempted to install ubuntu for the 4th and 5th time and have yet again had a fail. This time it actually completed the installation, which is a first. however upon reboot it takes me directly to Vista - I don't see grub or a o/s selection choice.

Then suddenly Ubuntu loads without showing any option to load windows 7.

Everything went just like the guide said it would at first. My problem is, once I reboot, I don't get the Windows Boot Manager screen at all; more specifically this screen:
It just reboots as windows like nothing ever happened, and the other boot options are not related to either wubi or ubuntu at all.
As the sticky indicated, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling wubi several times with the same results.

Using Ubuntu and any Linux OS. I installed Ubuntu using the Wubi installer. Everything went fine. When the install wizard completed and asked to Reboot Now, I did. When my computer rebooted, the Windows Boot Manager doesn't appear and it goes straight to Windows.
I'm using 32 bit Vista and have an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+. When using Wubi, the download defaults to the AMD 64 version and that is what I have installed.
I installed windows xp on my tobisha satellite l305, then installed ubuntu 9.10..my friend's laptop had vista and was SOOO bogged down from viruses, so he wanted to try ubuntu. We installed ubuntu, leaving the other half of his hard drive unallocated.Afterwards we installed xp, on the unallocated space, but it wouldn't let me dual boot... it would boot directly into xp, however, the ubuntu partition was still there because through the file system in xp we could find it.So then run gparted on a live CD, delete the ubuntu parition, leaving it unallocated, then installed it over that unallocated space.
now, when i dual boot it shows on the grub page the option to boot to ubuntu, ubuntu (recovery) and these two memory test things that when i ran it just shows a BIOS looking screen.testing my memory. However, on the desktop i have mounted 79gb which has all the windows files in it.so how do I tell ubuntu to stop hoarding everything and share the boot screen with windows xp?
I recently installed Lucid Lynx inside my Windows XP using Wubi. When I restart I don't have a boot screen giving me the option to boot into either or, it just boots directly into XP. How do I fix this so I can boot into Lucid?

Computer boots up and gives me the grub boot screen where I can choose from: ubuntu, some memory tests and windows recovery environment (loader). But no Windows Vista. When I boot the windows recovery option the windows boot loading screen comes up but then the screen turns blank but the hard drive is still working and the wifi light also comes on my keyboard. Ubuntu is working completely fine I just need to find a way of getting Grub to display Vista instead of the Recovery environment.

I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor.I have tried to grub-mkconfig and grub-update, both of which reported successful results.However on reboot I still get a blank screen for windows.This was not an issue with 9.04 and 9.10.so I don't think it is the machine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?

I am dual booting Windows and Ubuntu 10.10. I installed StartUp-Manager so that I could easily make Windows my default OS upon Startup.I did a sudo apt-get update / sudo apt-get upgrade and now I have a new kernel. This moved Windows down in the list, so now MemTest86 is the default OS upon Startup.I want to make Windows the default always, not just until the next Kernel upgrade comes through.

When I installed win 7 on I just did the upgrade so I wouldn't have to reformat my hardrive and now when I boot up it will not show the option to boot into windows or ubuntu.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
I've had Windows 7 installed for a few months now and would like to install Fedora 12 on a separate partition. I've tried this three times now, all of them ending with something wrong. The problem that exists for me now is that when I install Fedora 12 and boot up for the first time in GRUB, Fedora 12 works fine. ut when I boot into Windows 7 from GRUB, it just comes up with a black screen and says "BOOTMGR is missing; press ctrl + alt + del to restart" at the top. I don't believe that GRUB is booting into the wrong partition because I have no Windows recovery partition, just Windows 7. Also when I try and fix the Windows 7 partition with the system recovery disk, it says that the volume is corrupt every time. At this point I have everything backed up on a separate drive so I'm open to try installing Fedora 12 again even if it risks screwing up my Windows 7 partition, I would really just like to have a functioning dual boot.

Win7 -> ntfs
Ubuntu (root + home) -> ext4
Swap
Data (media & documents) -> ?
What file system should I choose for the data partition? If I go with ext3/4 it seems I can access them from Win7 using a file system driver, but it seems far from safe, from what google tells me. The driver installers aren't for Win7, and I need Ext4 without extents or an ext3-fs with an inode size of 128 to make it work at all. It saddens me to ask, but should I just go with NTFS?

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are
