Ubuntu Installation :: Preseed-file Not Working As Expected On Lucid Desktop Install - Read

I have a problem to get it to work. The installer seems to read the preseed-file alright, and some of the values defined in the preseed-file are taken into account. The questions regarding locale, keyboard layout and time zone are answered using the preseed-file, but in the user account creation-step the process goes wrong. The Full name-field is obtained from the preseed-file, but the login-name is generated by the installer and not read from the preseed. Also the password-fields are empty and not filled in. Also the script that I've defined with preseed/late_command is never run.
I tried searching the forums but no-one had exactly this kind of problem, so it makes me think that this has to be some trivial error I'm doing. Could someone take a look at these configs and see if there's something wrong with them? How should I continue resolving this?
I'm having trouble installing likewise open through preseed.I'v used the example from https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/instal...le-preseed.txt as the source of my preseed file.It works just fine installing openssh, smbfs and libpam-mount. I would like to create an unattended install ubuntu 10.10 cd. I have followed the ubuntu [URL].. on creating the preseed file, however, I can't find any useful tutorial on how to set the kernel parameters to perform an unattended install using my preseed file.
I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Y want to rename a bunch of files and directories to remove the space on the names, easy enough right?

Well, I thought that should have work but the problem is that $source comes up broken, when I run it with echo instead of mv I get the echo with broken names.

I am trying to get preseed working on a bunch of machines with multiple NICs but it doesn't pick the right interface and/or gets "no link" on all interfaces. My PXE kernel line looks like so (I have auto=true priority=critical and interface=auto)
I've generated a preseed for my Ubuntu Lucid installation, its loading ubiquity automatically (from kernel parm automatic-ubiquity) and it fills in all the values from the preseed file its given. However it displays the Ubiquity page "Ready to Install" (I am using the kubuntu ubiquity package) and I have to click the button install for it to start. How can I get it to skip this and just start installing?
I've run into a situation where when performing a pxe/preseed install the system boots up into the install without issue, getting a dhcp address, then the installer begins to configure the network and it gets to where it request a dhcp address and it instantly fails the install stating that we are either not using dhcp or it's slow.
I've added d-i netcfg/dhcp_timeout string 600 to the preseed file but it doesn't seem to be honoured here since it doesn't wait 600 seconds before failing. I have 2 other identical systems that install using the same preseed file but the installer completes as expected. This system has no issues installing centos just debian fails. I did try, once the install failed, to switch to the console and run udhcpc and the server received the address reserved for it.
Is there a method to force debian installer to wait a bit longer for the dhcp server besides what I've already done?

I have used Universal-USB-Installer to create a bootable usb stick (sandisk cruzer).I already have xp on the first partition (I installed this via usb so know that the laptop is capable of it).Booting to the usb stick brings me to the install menu forst. I choose "install to hard drive" which just reloads the same menu. Tried over and over, also tried booting as a live cd but this has the same result.
I'm trying to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10 via 8.10 etc. When I run update manager, I get this:

and then it closes. I've unselected all the third party packages and tried various servers, but no difference. I can wget the file, but when I look at it I see entries for "universe/binary-i386/Release", but nothing for "universal" .
The need which made me come here and share the problem with you is that the proper usage of late_command in preseed file.
I've prepare a preseed file which works fine, but the late_command should install a test script when installation finishes.
What I need is: copying the script from the cdrom into /root directory of the system which is being installed, and execute it! the code I've tried is found from those who previously tried executing script after installation. but for me that doesn't work!

The system that I'm gonna perform installation ubuntu on, is a server which has 3 slot of hard disk drive (SAS) and by default HP has configured them functioning in RAID 5. how the exact configuration could be?
I have an apparently stable installation of Xubuntu that I've hand-tweaked in a few ways. I'd like to be able to reinstall this system verbatim on this machine should a disk crash happen, etc.Is there a "standard" method to create an install and/or total-backup CD that would be an instantiation of the currently-installed-and-modified system?
What are the possible problem when Windows access the file from Ubuntu got Read Only even though have a full permission to read, write and execute the file? Ubuntu to Ubuntu accessing the file there is no problem only Windows got a problem.
I'm trying to preseed a 10.04 install, and it's giving me a lot of trouble. I've been using [url] as a guide, but I can't seem to make it work.
I have ripped the x64 alternate install .iso to my hard drive, inserted the preseed files (details on this later) and remastered and burned the iso. When I put the disc into my test PC, it boots up to the CD, checks for English keyboard, enters my custom install option and then fails. It brings up a red screen that says, "Incorrect CD-ROM detected. The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with the installation."
The way I've understood the documentation is that there are 2 files that needed edited, and one file that needs created: edit /isolinux/text.cfg, edit /isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and create /preseed.cfg

The preseed.cfg is 95% copied from the ubuntu documentation, I've only made the changes that are necessary. I'll admit I do not know what most of the boot parameters in the /isolinux/text.cfg file mean.
I want to try out the screenlet called Folder View:[URL]I have downloaded and installed it fine. However, when I double-click on it (or use the Start/Stop button) there is a momentary flash and then nothing interesting. I have configured Thunderbird mail client as well.
Issue #1: Mail sending works from Thunderbird but it always responds back with 'No mail on server' message when I try to receive mails. As you can see all settings lead to permissions 777 but that's not what happens. What happens if I say, touch a file, I get: 666 as this shows:
Same for files that are not obviously scripts such as just a.txt.
My umask is 0022.
Does anyone know why this is? Is it changeable for specific directories?
This is a special world viewed directory required by a piece of software... in other words, no, I am not in a habit of setting file permissions to 777 so please no comments about you shouldn't be using such permissions.
Truthfully, I can probably get away with permissions 666 and will if I can but right now I just want to know why it's happening this way and how to control it.
I'm trying to test whether some software that I am using will behave as expected when DST change over occurs. I'm specifically testing it for the GB timezone when it enters British Summer Time (BST) and then reverts to GMT. From the information I have, BST starts: Sunday 28 March 01:00 GMT (02:00 BST)and ends: Sunday 31 October 02:00 BST (01:00 GMT )To do this test I wrote a shell script that sets the date, runs the program, checks some logs and then reverts the time.
Entering BST was fairly straight forward as all I had to do was the following: export TZ=GB date 032800582010This set the date to be 28th March and the time to be 00:58 in the GB (GMT) timezone. As expected, the date then rolled forward to 02:00 BST. However, when I tried to do the same for coming out of BST into GMT, the time did not work out as expected. export TZ=GB date 103101582010Setting the time as above put the time straight into GMT and not BST even though it was two minutes before the time should have rolled-over.
However if I put the following: export TZ=GB date 103100582010the date was reported as BST! How can I setup the time so that I don't have to wait for hour before BST ends?

I am trying to preseed the UBUNTU 9.04 x86 installer and everything else is okay except that for some systems, it says "No Network Interfaces found" with options as "Continue" and "Go Back". My network interface detection is set to "auto" in my preseed file. I want to remove this popup. Can someone please help with the correct line in preseed.cfg?
I just made a custom ubuntu, following these instructions [url], and it works great, but during the install ubiquity tries to check the cd for extra packages... and prompts an error... but it doesn't have any packages nor it is needed to have... i just want that ubiquity skips this instruction.... I'm guessing the correct pressed instruction will solve this, but I can't find any mention to this...
On Slackware64 13.1 the as-installed en_GB locale gave Sunday as the first day of the week. This was not an issue until Xfce's Orage calendar was used when its display of Sunday as the first day of the week was offputting for someone used to Monday. A minor inconvenience but expected to be easy to fix.

There is this one server running CentOS5.4 Final which has certain application like Bugzilla. I have setup ssh on it and setup is for password less authentication. Have also setup PasswordAuthentication to no. So with password authentication should succeed. But it is. Though password less authentication is working fine, but I am also able to login using password.

CentOS 5.2. Openldap server-2.3.27-8.el5_2.4 I'm trying to get the server to do two things. One is allow authentication--that is, if a client is configured to use openldap for authentication, it should be able to access this server.
In other words, on machine_2, a client, doing getent passwd (as a quick test) will show the users in the openldap database. The more or less out of the box configuration works for this. However, as soon as I start trying to add ACLs, it stops working. For example, I want to restrict access to an address book which is also in the database. So I have
access to base.dn(changing base to subtree makes no difference) "ou=addressbook,dc=example, dc=com" by users read by anonymous auth Now, even though this is just the address book, after that, an ldap client can no longer get the names of users in ou=People, and using the ldap server for authentication doesn't work.
I don't understand what I'm missing. ACLs are supposed to work first match wins. *IF* I add under that, access to * by * read, it will work, but the address book can then be accessed without a bind dn.
I am not sure what I'm overlooking. If I put in any sort of access control, the only way that clients can continue to use the server for authentication is adding that access to * (or to dc=example,dc=com"), by * read. I tried using access to ou=Group and ou=Peoplle by * read, thinking that would allow the clients to authenticate, but that doesn't work either, The idea is to allow any machine configured as a client to use it for authentication, but also to restrict viewing the address book only to those with a proper bind dn name.
Working with an old desktop that had been running 8.04 Update failed so I installed from a LiveCD. Dual boot with XP. System runs great off of the CD. After installation of 10.04 and a restart, the system worked well. Tried lots of stuff off the Gnome menus. Restarted and booted XP. That worked too.
On my next restart I selected Ubuntu from the grub menu and the system gave me the sign in requester. I signed in but the desktop never appeared. All I got was the background and a mouse pointer.
Right clicking the mouse brings up a 7 item menu that includes items for creating a folder, creating a file, ....., choose a new background. The menu works. If I click create a file an icon for a new file appears on the screen. Clicking on the icon brings up a window running gedit. Choosing the new background item brings up a window with candidate new backgrounds. I have no idea how to get the gnome desktop back. The sign in screen has a bar at the bottom that shows Gnome is the default session setting. Booting into XP continues to work.
I've tried changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line in the /etc/default/grub to add nomodeset. That didn't help.
