Fedora Installation :: Kernel Update Fails Due To 10MB Boot Partition
Feb 23, 2010Finally updates are broken - I've been able to use my upgraded F12 system for some time, faithfully keeping up with f10, then f11. Just yesterday it finally broke:
Test Transaction Errors: installing package kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 needs 10MB on the /boot filesystem
It would appear that the most recent kernel update has broken the 10MB barrier initially set by the version I first installed (for the boot partition). Needless to say, I have quite an investment in this machine, and of course no time to back it all up and do a fresh F12 install. I am hoping someone out there can give me a bulletproof way to steal some space and expand the boot partition...
Ubuntu :: Hardy CD With Kernel 2.6.35 Fails To Boot
Oct 26, 2010So I just finished doing a Hardy based LiveCD. I made an installation in VirtualBox, installed some packages, and then compiled a totally new kernel, 2.6.35, actually this one: [URL] I compiled squashfs support in the kernel naturally Everything seems to be fine, the system boots up normally etc. But here comes the trouble: I make the iso file with remasterys (2.0.12-latest for Hardy) but this iso isn't able to boot.
It drops to busybox shell, casper.log says: /init: 1 /dev/sr0: no such file or directory Unable to find medium with the livesystem. My /dev folder is totally empty, it contains only the shells (8 pieces of tty). I don't know what's wrong...my rootfs is surely mounted, mount shows rootfs rw /

Oct 1, 2009As the post title says I have attempted to move my FC11 from a 120 gig ide drive to a 250 gig sata drive. I have tried all of the following with the same result listed below: Basic setup is as folows:
old hdd /dev/sda1 (boot) /dev/sda2(swap) /dev/sda3 (/)
attempt 1- boot fc11 live cd with old drive detected as sda and nwe drive detected as sdb.
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=512
attempt 2 - boot into fc11 live cd fdisk remove old partitionon /dev/sdb and create exact copy of partition table on /dev/sda on /dev/sdb - mark /sdb1 as bootable and copy /dev/sda1 + /dev/sda3 to /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb3
dd if=/dev/sda* of=/dev/sdb* bs=512 (* denotes 1 or 3 respectively)
attempt 3 boot linux rescue cd based on debian
run gparted to remove old partitions on /dev/sdb
use gparted to copy partitions from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb
All of the above result in the following (as best as I can describe it)
system self checks OK
system loads GRUB menu -OK
system appears to load kernel and then hangs after outputting device information regarding my USB keyboard and mouse.
Is there some magic that I am missing? system.map perhaps? Additonal info: grub.conf looks like:

Fedora :: Boot Fails After Kernel Update / What To Do?
Nov 15, 2010After updating my kernel from 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686 to 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 I can't boot anymore. The error message says: "No root device found Boot has failed, sleeping forever."
I'm booting from 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686 now but I would like to sort this thing out. What should I do? File a bug? I never did that, so I don't know where to go.

So I copied all files to a temp location, deleted my partition (/dev/sda3), recreated it a few cylinders later (same name) and copied the files to the newly created partition. I updated UUIDs in grub's configuration as suggested in this thread:[url]
But now it fails to boot with the following error:

I checked the filesystem on this partition and its fine. I tried to recreate the initramfs from Knoppix:

How can I either fix it or install a different kernel on this drive so I could boot into it and re-install my default kernels?

Jun 5, 2010I have upgraded at lucid from karmic.I have a little peculiar setup. My root partition is on sda3 and I mount the following:/usr -> /dev/sdb1/var ->/dev/sdb2/home -> /dev/sdb3(sdb isn't really a SATA disk but a PATA).When I boot with the new kernel 2.6.32-22 mountall stops with error messages that /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdb1 are not ext2 file systems(this message comes from fsck.ext4??-It's using a ext4 program to check for ext2??)and cannot be mounted.Of cource those are normal ext4 filesystems which are being mounted without any problems with the last karmic kernel 2.6.31-21 which is what I am using)

Aug 10, 2011each time i upgrade my kernel, my installation of lirc fails to work after the upgrade, and i have to re-compile (against new kernel) and install the lirc modules... which i do via something like:

after which all is well. this of course is a problem that DKMS should solve for me but it doesn't do it. also i get this message in my messages log:

Debian Installation :: 2.6.32-5-amd64 Boot Fails - How To Make It Boot
May 27, 2011My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
Fedora Installation :: Xen-kernel - Unable To Boot In Normal Kernel
Feb 11, 2010I use a pretty fresh installed RHEL 5.4, which should be very similar to Fedora. After the basic installation I installed xen and xen-kernel via yum with no errors. I can select the xen-kernel at boot time. But after booting the normal kernel shows up.

My /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like:

Jun 24, 2010I'm trying to install ubuntu on a laptop (Acer Aspire 6530), and duel boot with windows vista. However, when starting up the computer with the CD in the drive, the installer fails to load, showing only a picture at the bottom of the screen showing a square and a circle with a person in it... This persists for as long as I have cared to wait (hours) and pressing keys at first results in nothing, then after sufficient key presses just produces beeps...
Anyone know what's wrong there?

May 1, 2010Installed v9 a couple of weeks back and have been causally mucking about with it since. I managed to get XP and ubuntu running as a dual boot system (which was an achievement ).
Anyway, i've upgraded to 10.04 - and already loving it. However... my XP o/s no longer boots. It use to prior to the upgrade. Now, when the XP o/s is selected from GRUB2, I just get a series of bleeps and a flashing _.
Now, I am a complete novice. I actually have no idea where to even begin trouble shooting GRUB2 (and i'm assuming its a problem with GRUB).

Jun 10, 2010Dual boot Windows XP SP3 & Ubuntu 9.10 on a single hdd, w/2 partitions. Booted to Ubuntu and upgraded online. XP boots fine, but Ubuntu, not so much; a msg about /dev not found, followed by a shell login prompt. I suspect a grub problem, but haven't been able to find a definitive answer. Since I can at least boot XP, I do not want to do anything that would screw that up and leave me with no bootable OS. I did the "upgrade" shortly after 10.04 was released. Is there a way to reliably fix this w/o possibly screwing up my ability to boot XP, the only OS I can boot? I have no Ubuntu 10.04 disk, as I used their upgrade online option.

Jan 16, 2011I have win 7 installed on my main first hdd and would like to install ubuntu 10.10 on my newly installed second hdd. Problem is that during install when i choose manual partitioning my second hdd is not visible. So it is impossible to choose the disk for installation. Tried to disable first hdd in bios but pc than fails to boot from dvd. Tried the alternate ubuntu cd and second drive even then is invisible. Second hdd is visible in win 7 and fully can be manipulated in 7. Tried to format the drive as fat32, ntfs, linux ext 2 and 3, but same problem. Drives are mounted as 1st hdd is primary master and 2nd hdd is secondary master.

I have a two year old Acaer Aspire 5735Z with Windows Vista as the OS. This has USB as a possible boot source, now of course at the top of the list.
I downloaded 10.10 and installed on an empty 8 GB Kingston drive as guided. There is just under 4 GB on the drive. The drive had been used before and all deleted.
So at start up the first thing that happens is the led on the USB drive flickers for less than one second, and then the Windows boots.
How can I know that a boot sector is installed ?

Aug 1, 2011I just upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 but now all the kernels fail to boot. The resolution of grub changed and the older kernels are put into a 'previous kernels' folder. The most recent kernel halts at the message '* Stopping userspace bootsplash [ OK ]' and the previous kernels fail with the message 'Unlink after no-irq. Controller is probably using the wrong IRQ',
or show the background of the login screen with just a white box.
I think the cause is that I have an ATI graphics card (HD Radeon 3650), because on my 2 other computers ubuntu upgrades fine and they have NVIDEA graphics cards.
As a last resort I tried installing different distro's like Linux Mint but it also gived me the 'unlink after no-irq' message.

Jul 26, 2010I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

Mar 3, 2010Any ideas as to why ubuntu netbook remix would fail to boot after installing? I've tried twice installing it via usb on a dell netbook. Installation completes just fine but screen just flashes over and over as if in a reboot loop. I was able to run the OS via the USB stick just fine even with persistence but the flippin thing wont boot.

steps:
-- installed windows 7 on my HP g61
-- defragged using perfectdisk 11
-- used windows 7 volume shrink to get windows partition to 65 GB
-- created an NTFS volume in the new 220 GB partition with windows (Ubuntu studio's partitioner would not recognize the space unless I did this first)
-- ran ubuntu studio 10.04 installer
-- deleted the 220 GB partition and the installer automatically created a new ext4 partition with a swap partition.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows XP Fails To Boot From GRUB?
Aug 24, 2010I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS-the Lucid Lynx on top of a Windows XP installation. The Windows partition started before I did this. Now, all I get is a flashing cursor when I tell GRUB to start the Windows XP partition.
I have tried reinstalling Ubuntu with no effect. I have tried repairing Windows using a Windows installation disk.
However, I can reach the files in the Windows partition just fine from Ubuntu.

Sep 13, 2010Recently freshly reinstalled ubuntu 10.04 on a new / blank hard drive and it now crashes on startup. Quick version: I have a nvidia Quadro NVS 295, it gets to the point just after the bios with the flashing dash, seemingly tries to init xserver / gdm then crashes. Keyboard lights go off but the pc stays on, and just sits there with the monitor in power saving mode. Tried in recovery mode, the blue / grey ascii terminal thing pops up for less then a second then the display crashes in the same way.
Swapping with an ATI card borrowed from elsewhere, the new install will boot quite happily. Anyone know how I can get 10.04 to boot with a nvidia quadro NVS 295? Its a bog standard card and my version of 10.04 I upgraded to on my old hard drive works fine. ts a reasonably new dell XPS 64bit pc.
Longer version:
I run 3 monitors using a PCI-e x16 NVS 295 and a PCI NVS 295. This worked great under 9.10 and 10.04. Boss gave me a solid state HD so trying to install 10.04 on that. However on my first install attempt the live CD failed to load (same problem as above, gets to init'ing the display and crashes with no output). I removed the second PCI card to run with just the 1 PCI-e x16 nvidia card, this time the live CD worked fine and I could install, but I am stuck on the boot problem. Booted into the system using the ATI card and did an update just incase something may have changes / been fixed but the issue persists.
