I'm having a problem with my wifi card: it is not detected by the network manager. I have tried going to the Hardware Drivers utility, but it doesn't find any proprietary hardware.I really am at a loss as to how to make Lucid "start over" with the wifi detection.I have installed Lucid using an existing /home, which was under 8.10. Maybe i just need to wipe out some configuration files to start afresh?
View 9 RepliesI'm was trying to choose between GNOME and KDE for version 8. However both the live DVD's fail to pick up the Wifi card on my system. I am also unable to use certain basic commands such as ifconfig on the live CD. I am completely new to Linux and Debian (of course). Pardon me for the hand holding. This will be my first install of a Linux system.
What steps I can take to ensure that the Wifi card and the network card will be supported - hardware compatibility test maybe? Is there a way to try before installing? This will be a dualboot with Windows 8.1

I have just installed Fedora 14 on my desktop machine and have just discovered that it can't detect my WiFi card. The card is an Edimax EW-7711In which the makers say will run with Linux. I know that the card works fine with Ubuntu because my brother uses the same card in his Ubuntu machine but he is away until after Christmas so I don't know what he did to make it work other than I know he used ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers that were supplied with the card. I have looked for ndiswrapper in the Fedora repositories but it doesn't appear to be there.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI started on ubuntu 8.10 and my wireless card has always worked,Since i did a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 it still seems to work to a point.I can see networks, click them and use a password to connect but it never seems to carry on, I typed the password correctly and after a minute it asks for it again.I have read a post about problems other people are having and that i need to install a different program.But i cant install another program if there is no wireless as apt-get doesn't work without internet connection.So... I need to download something that will fix it (possible update if one has been released) to xp (partition) then access xp partition from ubuntu and install it.

My questions are: is there anyone using this laptop on Lucid with sound? Can anyone provide a new idea how to make this work if it is compatible hardware.
About a month ago I did a clean install of Kubuntu Lucid. I believe it was after that point I was unable to run other LiveCDs without some problems -- I first noticed that swap partitions failed or weren't detected. It appears that partition managers such as gparted, fdisk, etc cannot detect my partitions and interprets my hard drive as "unallocated" (this has been tested with multiple LiveCDs). However, as far as I can determine, all the LiveCDs with applications for mounting drives and HD backup ARE able to detect the partitions.Furthermore, when I am in Lucid, I am able to detect the partitions with gparted.It's very odd... I've only found a few situations like this on the web. Could it have something to do with the GPT?[URL]

The partitions on it are accessible via the Places Menu on the Lucid Live CD.
It's just when I try to install, nothing is detected in Step 4 of 8, "Prepare Partitions".
An old 80GB IDE disk, on the other hand is seen by the partitioner.
I am not using RAID and it is not enabled in the BIOS.
Working on a friend's PC, which was previously running XP and got a very nasty virus infection. I convinced him to try Ubuntu, showed him the interface running on my own machine and he was hooked. Backed up all his data to network, completely erased the hard disk and install Ubuntu. Sounds easy, right?
Installed 9.10, it didn't detect the video card and xorg.conf was missing from /etc/X11. After some messing around trying to get it to work, I realised that the sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg command wasn't working properly and didn't produce the menu shown in the screenshots. After some digging I found that this was a bug in 9.10, so to make the job easier, I wiped the drive again and started again on 9.04.
With 9.04, at least the xorg.conf file was there, but had no entries under configured video device. I tried adding "vesa", "via", "openchrome" (all on separate attempts), all to no avail. I retried the dpkg -reconfigure command above. still no menu.
Now several days into this "easy" install, I rolled back to the LTS release (8.04 - hardy) and installed that instead. Still no video card detection, and resolution is obstinately stuck at 800x600. I am installing Linux for the first time right now and I am facing a bit of an issue when it comes to network hardware driver installation. The NIC on my motherboard is a Marvel 88E1111 (computer is very old). During the installation of Debian, I got to a menu which read "No Ethernet card detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card you can select it from the list", then provides me with said list of driver names.
However, the only driver I could find that came close the NIC I am using was one called just "Marvel", and selecting actually didn't do anything (screen flashes blue and returns me to the same menu). So I continued by selecting the "none of the above" option, and now the new menu reads: "A driver for your hardware is not available. You may need to load drivers from removable media (...)". So I thought I should google for the drivers and see what I can find. The official site of the company that made my NIC doesn't even list my model in their drivers' list (to be expected since it is so old).
Then I found this: URL.., but I was expecting more of a download than the source code itself.
I'm a Linux noob, so please go easy on me! I've been desperate to get rid of my Windows install for a while now and have finally started to make the move over, but have a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 install. I've scoured the help documentation and forum for days now without managing to resolve my problem, and have finally resorted to posting my problem. So I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
1 Installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Viglen Furtura S200) but the only way I have been able to get it to install and boot properly is edit the GRUB with the following acpi=off i915.modeset xforcevesa. I had to add these parameters even to boot the live CD as well. I think I'm right in assuming that this is forcing the use of a generic graphics driver, consequently leaving some visual features unavailable. I'm not really sure what turning acpi off is doing. Is it possible to resolve this? Is this the cause of problem number 2?
2 After install there is no sound. Sound preferences shows no hardware and ALSAmixer is empty when opened. I have followed the sound troubleshooting through and it looks like my sound card is actually being picked up on the board, but I fall at the point of checking the loaded ALSA Modules as my report shows that none are loaded?!
Last month I installed a newer MoBo + CPU and PSU, (See system specs in my signature) and moved from Maverick to Lucid 10.04.
I was running Natty 11.04 64bit up until a couple of days ago, but that was locking up like mad. I did a fresh install of 10.04 over the whole HDD yesterday...though cannot recall it asking me if I wanted 32 or 64bit...will neeed to check)
I'm using an ATI Radeon (Sapphire?) x1650 PRO graphics card - but borrowed from a friend as my previous card wouldn't fit in the upgrade motherboard. Ubuntu is running quite fast with it but often stutters when on Firefox or Chrome. With Natty the system would lock up at least once an hour, with Lucid - at the moment it's only locked up once in 6 hours... I'm assuming this is just problems with Ubuntu and not the card. I get no odd lines or color on the screen.
I'll need to give this card back at some point... I'm wondering if people could suggest other cards (Nvidia/ATI or other) that are known to work happily with Ubuntu 10.04. I've got a budget of around �40, but then I'm not gaming so guess shouldn't need anything too high spec. (My PSU has a PCI-E connector if needed...though doubt it will be!)
I cant seam to find out how to get my card to work i cant find out how to install the driver or finding the wifi card on the system.

I've been meaning to get back into linux for a couple of years now.It seems I may have left it too long for my hardware.I'm struggling to freshly install lucid 10.04 onto a pc with an ATI 9200 graphics card.Can someone give a definitive answer on this - the internet is full of different solutions and I cannot get any to work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been unable to get the fancy purple bootsplash (plymouth) since I installed Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T43. The bootsplash would up when I had booted off of a Live CD, but all future instances post-install only shows the blinking terminal cursor, followed by the GNOME log in screen. This has occurred after upgrading from Karmic, and after attempting a fresh installation of Lucid. Here's what I've tried so far without success:
comment out "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" in the grub file tried running echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash update-initramfs -u under su but it did not work because my conf.d directory doesn't contain a file called "splash", but only one file called "resume". This fix was taken from [URL]..A Google search showed that a lot of users with this problem have NVIDIA cards; however I'm running ubuntu on a system with an ATI card.
I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I am connecting to the same I do on Windows 7(yes dual boot).It asks for WEP, I put it and says Connection Established. I made a clean installation of Maverick Meerkat and everything runs perfect except the card drivers... then I investigated almost a week on the net and finally the problem was solved (I made the installation of some drivers on Synaptics tool, then I wrote some codes on the Terminal to activate the light to turn it blue and the Wi-Fi IS ON AND WORKS!).
I thought everything was ok, but when I restarted the laptop, the wifi conections aren't able to be detected so I must re-install the card driver to get it active again :S. I really don't know why the card drivers works only when I install them, because restarting the system make them simply don't work.
