I'm trying to install Oracle DB on OpenSuse (is it smart, because it's not certified for that OS?)..and I've set oracle parameters using oracle script, but when I'm runnign through oracle installation, kernel parameters check reports that parametersa are 'n/a', like oracle OS account cannot access those parameters..

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's documented in the howto's that you need to have the nomodeset kernel parameter specified if you want to run the proprietary Nvidia driver. But I read in certain posts that this is only required for "older" graphics cards.Can someone shed some light on this? Is the parameter ALWAYS required when running the nvidia driver, or only for certain graphic cards?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have not dug into Ubuntu for almost a year now (Since Jaunty, really). I am trying to come to grips with Grub2, but have just now encountered it in Lucid. I am having a terrible time with the graphics chipset, and it may well be that Ubuntu cannot be used on this computer (an older laptop with the dreaded Intel 82845G graphics chip). There are a number of older bug reports that it is unsupported, but some success in more recent versions.
Anyway, one suggestion has been to add i915.nomodset=1 to the kernel boot line. Now, this was a cinch in Legacy Grub, but I have been reading Grub2 wikis and tutorials for two days now, and I know about the config files, but I cannot find anything which tells me specifically how to add a parameter to the kernel boot line.
After setting the "nomodeset" kernel parameter, to install the nVidia proprietary driver in OpenSuSE 11.3 (I need to do CUDA development), my Sansa Clip+ is no longer recognized. When I turn the "nomodeset" option off, I can see it with $(fdisk -l).

My question is, what does this mean for the system? If it used apics before, what happens now? edit: Added "kernel.semmni = 2048" to the tail of /etc/sysctl.conf and then ran "sysctl -p". End result is an unknown key error (apparently kernel.semmni isn't the valid name anymore?).

I am trying to do a fsck on my ext3 partition, but so far failed to let the system come up in single user mode and having the partition mounted read only. It says in the kernel parameter that it is read only (RO) but still mounts it RW. A remount with mount -o remount,ro does not work, since / is always busy. what to do to get a fsck done? I don't want to boot into a rescue system, this should be possible on a running system (like Windows does it, when rebooting)

I have an issue that is fixed by changing the lpfc driver to run using MSI interrupts. This is done by adding "options lpfc lpfc_use_msi=2" /etc/modprobe.conf.local file.
Is there a way to make this change using kernel boot parameters?
I got the following modprobe scripts modprobe -k -q streams what does the -k parameter mean?. is it exist in older modprobe? I don't see -k parameter in recent modprobe.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've AMD64 system with Ubuntu 11.04 installed. It's been rough ride for me to install oracle-xe-universal. I've already spent more than 2 days on this. Still unsuccessful.
1) First I downloaded the packages libaio_0.3.104-1_i386.deb and oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb
2) Then I ran
sudo apt-get install bc (ran fine)
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture libaio_0.3.104-1_i386.deb (ran fine)
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb
(gave me dependency error for libc6 (>= 2.3.2), I modified the control file to remove dependency and rebuilt the package) (now worked fine) Oracle xe is now installed. Then I tried to start the DB it started but it's HTTP client never started. So I decided to uninstall the oracle-xe=universal. None of the sudo apt-get remove oracle-xe-universal command's didn't worked for me. So i went for manual uninstallation directions as per oracle link.
I ran the following command-
--Manually uninstalling Oracle 10g--
sudo rm -rf /usr/lib/oracle /etc/oratab /etc/init.d/oracle-xe /etc/sysconfig/oracle-xe /usr/share/doc/oracle_xe /usr/share/doc/oracle_xe_client
Then I again ran the following command to install oracle-xe
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb
See below what I got as the output-

Even in applications menu I don't see the if oracle has been installed. So i conclude first time installation was ok but somehow http client didn't worked. After manual uninstallation, second installation didn't even loaded/installed the oracle-xe in init.d directory.
Since certainly half a year I have to add the vga=0x317 parametere at the end of the root parameter in the menu.lst file after each upgrade of the kernel and also recently after upgrading from 11.1 to 11.3. Without this, the splash screen is not shown on my HP Pavilion laptop.

The Xorg logfile gives no fatals or clues (at least to me), but the "warn" file in /var/log gives the following at the end:

After I installed Linux OS(for example:SuSE10,redhat5),the [root] parmeter of [kernel] in created grub.conf seems that sometimes it's defined to device name.sometimes it's defined to Label or sometimes UUID. So ,I want to know what is that relative to? Hard disk type or OS version or both?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI ran into a problem the moment i installed 11.1. The GUI wouldn't show up (ctrl+alt+f2 yeilded a black screen with a blinking underscore). Failsafe worked fine, though.
So, i tried entering, one by one, every parameter that was entered in the failsafe boot options. Entering 'x11failsafe' gave me a flawless GUI. So, i opened the '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file and added this parameter in the 'showopts' of the normal mode, to make it permanent. Fine. Now, what exactly have i done?
Note- I use an NVidia 8000 series Graphic card. I'll post more details if you need them.
10.10 installation fails: not paritition nor hard drive visible, Gparted does not start: trying to install 10.10 as a 2nd boot to windows Xp MCE installation. View 9 Replies View RelatedI've decided to install openSUSE on my Dell PowerEdge SC1420. It's got an onboard Adaptec CERC SATA 2S RAID controller that I've used to set up a RAID 0 using 2x 250GB SATA drives. The SATA RAID is enabled in BIOS (which I've updated to v. A04) and the logical device is set to bootable.
openSUSE sees the logical device and sets up 4 partitions (3x Ext4 and 1x SWAP) and install seems to go okay. I get through to the GNOME desktop and everything seems to be working okay until I reboot. Then I get an error saying that no partition is detected from the CERC 2S device.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I've spent the entire weekend trying different configurations of raid and partion file systems! I'm on the verge of buying windows 7 and I guess I'll have to if this just isn't going to work.
Added the repo and installed Virtualbox.
Added user as vboxusers group
Added the following packages according to the error log
- make gcc kernel-source dkms
Finally /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup reports an error
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules done
Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel

I've installed SLES 11 SP1 as a VM on my Hyper-V/Win2008R2, HP DL380G6 QuadCore, total 18GB RAM, 4GB assigned to the VM. The installation does not include a gui and everything works as expected. The hv-modules are visible but the systems freezes while I

- run an rsync from my physical P DL360G5
I have to powercyle the VM to reestablish a connection i.e. to CUPS by browser or to open a new session by ssh. Why SLES crashes on hyper-V or what I can do here?
