Aug 31, 2011I followed this article How To Network openSUSE 11.4 And Windows to network wired (ethernet) windows xp and wireless opensuse 11.4 and everything is working great. i can see windows from opensuse and opensuse from windows but have a few questions.
First, when i got to the section to Open firefox or Konqueror and in the address bar type localhost:901 and press the Enter key in articles photo it shows i should have, home-globals-shares-printers-wizard-status-view but i only have home-status-view-password in my firefox when i typed localhost:901, is that all i should have?
OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up Print Drivers In Samba?
Apr 26, 2011i'm trying to add windows print drivers to smb for them to be automatically downloaded to the client upon printer installation. I've followed the samba.org Printing documents which have been helpful to some degree. I have an HP printer and i'd like to just upload and register the .inf,.dll.cab files that the manufacture cd comes with for the client to use the .inf file to install the drivers from that location but i keep getting Werr_invalid_PARAM
here is the syntax of what i'm trying to do.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up 11.3 To Access Printers On Windows Server 2003 Via Samba?
Sep 7, 2010I'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

Aug 19, 2010how to get clients connecting to an office printer. during a migration from windows server to debian/samba.
We have:
5 windows XP machines one Windows Server 2003 machine, PDC of the old domain One debian Samba PDC (of TEST domain)/print server (with CUPS installeD) running in a virtual machine hosted by the windows server One Toshiba eStudio 3511 printer
Using the CUPS control panel, I've been able to autodetect and add the printer, and it appears as an available share in SWAT for samba. However, the driver isn't perfect. CUPS could only supply drivers for the 3510c, not the 3511.
However, clients on the TEST domain are unable to access it. Doing so gives an error about a local policy preventing a connection to the print queue. I've tried googling this error and the fix that comes up in every result about changing a point and print policy setting, does not work.
however, I've been able to work around the issue. by first logging in as local administrator, navigating to the domain server, then inputting the domain root account credentials at the prompt. That allows me to attempt to connect to printers, but with a different error
"The server for the printer does not have the correct driver installed...."
I very strongly suspect that the 3510 driver actually will work, but it's just not being shared properly. The printer driver share folder is /var/lib/samba/printers, and that directory contains only a few empty subfolders. CUPS did not place the driver there as I would expect, and that is where clients are looking for it.
The thing is, I have no idea where CUPS DID put the driver.
On the old domain, the printer uses drivers for es4511, and looking on the toshiba site, this seems to be what they provide. The Toshiba Site provides a huge variety of drivers, including several windows ones, a universal driver, and a CUPS PPD. Cups asks for an optional PPD during install and I tried supplying that. It said installed successfully, but didn't change anything.
I've tried pasting the windows drivers into /var/lib/samba/printers/W32X86 too, and likewise with other drivers from toshiba's site. but this doesn't change anything either, so I'm at a bit of a loss.
how to install/setup drivers on a samba PDC, for windows machines?

Fedora Networking :: Samba And Network Manager In 9 - Setting Up A Wired Connection?
Feb 3, 2009I have 2 workstations that I'm trying to network together so that I can backup each to the other. One is XP sp2 and the other Fedora 9. Since installing Samba on the Fedora box and trying to get it configured, I have a problem that Add/remove programs won't do installs because it says there's no connection to a network. Network Manager says there aren't any connections, but it worked before the Samba install. Mozilla and Thunderbird can access the internet OK. Both workstations are connected by cable to my router and thus to my ISP (DNS server).
Two questions:- where can I find hints on setting up a wired connection (which card's MAC address does it want? router or wrkstn?) and Am I right that Add/remove is stuffed because of Network Manager?I now have Samba working from Linux to XP, but still can't get into Linux from XP. I tried the Linux PC's MAC address and set up a wired connection in Network Manager. NM still thinks there isn't one...

Dec 30, 2010I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.
Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.

May 21, 2010I am having a problem with Ubuntu 10.04. I was setting up network sharing with Samba. Set up went fine, then I decided to change the hostname.
Following instructions I found on the web, I edited etc/samba/samba.conf to reflect my desired hostname.
Now I have to use superuser to run synaptic or update center. I don't know what else I have "broken".
I would like to change my hostname, if I did it incorrectly for 10.04 please enlighten me.

May 28, 2011When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.
I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.

Jun 1, 2009I am trying for the last many days to setup my opensuse 10.3 as Samba PDC Server according to the URL mentioned below, but in vain:How to setup SUSE 10.3 as Samba PDC - openSUSE When ever I try to join a Windows XP machine to the domain setup on Opensuse, I get the error:'The following error occured while attempting to join the domain. The network path was not found'. What could be the reason for this error despite of the fact the I am able to ping the FQDN of the PDC from the XP machine, but the XP machine simply denies to join the domain because of the above mentioned error.

May 30, 2010I am using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and Samba3.4.7.I have read a lot of posts and different web pages on setting up Samba on a Peer-to-Peer network with Windows XP but just cant make it work. I can see the Guest account in XP My Network Places but cant access the folder when I click on it.Network not accessible or you dont have permission. I can PING both ways ok. I have Firestarter turned OFF and I dont have any third party firewall on XP.

Apr 21, 2010I have a single NIC (eth0) and it has a single, static public address assigned to it. I would like to assign an additional private address (192.168.1.68) to the NIC to make accessing my router more convenient, but I'm having a little trouble. I'm not using the Network Settings module in YaST because whenever I've tried before it has usually resulted in my internet connection failing and being unable to remove the alias info I tried setting in YaST. So, instead, I'm just trying to do it by editing the configuration directly. I'm also using it as an opportunity to learn a little bit more about Linux. So far, all I've done is add an extra line to my /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file. Originally the contents of the file were as follows.

OpenSUSE Network :: Debian Server To Opensuse Desktop Samba?
Jan 20, 2010I setup a debian home server some time ago and have successfully setup samba so my windows machines can access them and upload/download data off it.I have setup opensuse on this desktop and after allowing smb through the firewall I now seem to have read only access to the smb shares.I am using the same username and password as I do on my windows machine, so in theory smb server should see my username and password and allow me read/write, like it does in win7. Is this correct?
Having just thought about it I think samba is just a tool to get shares working between linux/windows and macos.Is samba even the best tool for linux - linux sharing? how do I get read/write access to my shares in opensuse?or do I use another program to see my shares?I'm a bit new to this linux- linux sharing so I apologies.

Jan 25, 2010I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 w/KDE interface on a HP Pavilion dv5-1010us laptop.Now we're trying to get the wireless to work. It's got a built-in wireless adapter, but we're not sure what kind of adapter it is. HP's Website is no help there. According to another site, it's an Intel WifiLink 5100. I did download the wireless driver from the HP site, but it's a .exe file. Anyone had any luck setting up this or a similar HP laptop. I couldn't find this model on the HCL/Laptops/HP - openSUSE page, but it seems OpenSUSE supports wireless other HP Pavilion models.

On my laptop (HPDV7), using DHCP for network access, KDE4.
I use Network Manager to manage wired and wireless connectivity.
I also have Samba server running for connectivity to Windows machines.
My router runs DD-WRT.
How do I tell this HPDV7 system to propagate a Host Name up to the router?
In the DD-WRT status screen, I see Host Name as "*" associated with the assigned IP address.
I cannot, for example, ping my HPDV7 machine from my windows machine, I assume because the router (also providing DNS for my network) does not provide the name to address translation.
I CAN ping the IP address directly, and Samba connectivity from the Windows machine to HPDV7 works.

Jun 9, 2010I am connected to work via a VPN. I am logging into a Solaris box at work from OpenSuse 11, using ssh -X. I would like to start a GUI on the solaris box. The problem is that I don't know what value to give the DISPLAY variable. Is it the local internal LAN ip address, for my machine? I did try that, and I tested it using, xterm on the solaris machine. It says it can't open the display. I have enabled remote connections on my machine using xhost +.I have to run a performance test on the Solaris box at 7am in the morning... so need to find out how to start the GUI

Aug 10, 2010i got some bad virus on my windows and there is no way to remove it so i need to use linux some time till i find a way to remove the virus.I run a online test to see what linux distribution will be the best for my pc since i have very bad/old pc and i found this one.Everything was fine but when it come the part to get internet access it gone bad...I have adsl modem the model model is DSL-360R.This is how i create a internet access in windows.I open con.panel go to network conections and there is a local area conection icon.Right click/properties the select Internet protocol(TCP/IP) and click install i enter thoose numbers(given by my net provider) Ip address: 192.168.1.2 and etc...(If you need the other numbers i will tell you.).
Then i create a new conection.I use a manual login i have username [URL] and password like 2003.I need to get internet on my linux.I aredy called the support of my operator but thoose noobs said they dont support linux and the man was kindly and said somethink about drivers and said to try somethink with spconfig or somethink like that i dont remmber all i know it didnt worked.That is it i tell you all i know and i hope that u can help me and tell me how to create a new connection. P.s my first impression from openSUSE> The os looks great, i love the instaled theme.

Aug 19, 2010I can't seem to get Remote Administration (vnc) working for the life of me. I tried the ip4/ip6 fix and every other work around I could find. I simply can't figure things out. I can't say I'm new to Linux but I can say that I am quite new to openSuse and the RPM world in general. My actual error isn't much of an error but that of the vnc window just being a black window that eventually times out.
As of now I access and configure the box vis ssh.I'm using:

These message have started appearing the system logs </var/log/messages and /var/log/warn> since Mar 2, 2011. They seem to occur about every 13 minutes (780 seconds). What could it mean? Is it serious?

Jun 14, 2011I have setup samba server, set NMBD, SMBD & NTPD from system services and set apparmor to complain but I am still unable to read any network drives. I have checked the firewall and seen that samba is set to enable for internal allowed services. Also should I be changing the NMBD, SMBD & NTPD to complain from App armor?

Aug 19, 2011When I access my OpenSUSE box's samba shares from another PC I am able to browse them, but am not able to follow symlinks.I've had the problem before on Ubuntu and fixed it by adding the following lines to my /etc/samba/smb.conf
unix extensions = No
wide links = Yes
follow symlinks = Yes
I've added them into my OpenSUSE smb.conf (below) but still no joy.

Aug 11, 2010I have opensusu 11.3 on my laptop and windows7 on first desktop, and XP on second desktop. Also, on my opensuse laptop I have installed XP as virtual OS in vmware player.I have setup samba using this guide that was given to me on this forum.From opensuse laptop I can see my Win 7 desktop, but cant log in. I enter Win 7 username and password, but it doesn't let me in.
Now, when I start XP trough vmware I can see win 7 desktop and connect it with username and password and browse my shares. On laptop, file sharing works both ways between host opensuse ang guest XP.On second desktop computer with XP, and I can connect to it from opensuse laptop normally.
