i downloaded the gnome 3 based on fedora from www.gnome3.org. But when i run the image i dont see an option to install to my harddrive it just runs from my cd rom drive. Can any please lead me with instructions as to where and how i can install it to my harddrive.
View 8 RepliesI have a Sony VAIO AR series, it contains two separate 120GB hard drives that were originally configured in a raid. They're called hd0, and hd1. I disabled the raid and partitioned hd1 in 3 ways, one medium sized partition for the operating system (ext4), one large partition for storage (ext4) and one small partition for Swap space. I then installed Ubuntu onto hd1 with help from UNetbootin. After installation went fine I loaded up Windows installer, created two NTFS partitions, one medium and one large, and installed Windows 7 of the medium sized partition. Now I can't figure out how to boot into the Ubuntu side on hd1. Needless to say, in Windows, hd1 is not visable at all. I can see my two NTFS partitions fine.
When booting up I go through two main screens. The first screen "Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM," lists the physical disks (0, and 1.) and gives me the option to enter configuration with [cntrl+i]. The second screen gives me a list of options to boot from, Yet they are all Windows options and many are redundant. The list includes "Enter Command Line," which when selected tells me "Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line." command line brings me to "grub>" I tried booting Ubuntu from this command line, but don't have much to work with here. I've heard of servers and things like that using a hard drive image. Is this similar to a disk image? What are the benefits of using hard drive imaging as opposed to using DVDs? And perhaps most importantly: how would I go about it using Fedora 10 (64 bit)?
View 5 Replies View RelatedDoes anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.
I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.

OK so here is my problem, i have an OLD P4 2.8 GHZ PC with 512MB ram, last year i was able to burn i believe fedora 9 to a CD and install it on this PC before i removed the drive to use as an external drive. "Dont know where the CD went"
I just recently purchased a 40GB hard drive and am looking to reinstall Fedora 14 on this P4 PC, i want to use this PC as a HTPC just for internet, ..... and stream videos, maybe some internet games etc etc, my problem is my main PC cant burn any cd/dvds due to the Drive's being burned out from burning xbox games at 4x on a regular basis, the PC i want to install Fedora on only accepts CD's and even then it barely reads anything!!
Now that you know my situation i want to know if i can take the 686MB 32bit iso image and put it on a 2GB usb drive and boot/install it to the HD that way on my old P4 PC, i want Fedora 14 as my main desktop, no partitions or walk arounds. If this helps the mobo on that OLD pc with the P4 is a p4vmm2 v5 i believe the p4 is 2.8ghz, ram is 512mb and i was able to install a 64mb nivida card agp 4x over the stock 32mb agp card it came with!
Last year windows xp was sketchy on it, i installed i think Fedora 9 and it ran great, but at that time it was a 120GB maxtor ide, and i decided to use it as an external drive for my main pc to back up alot of goodies, in the end the drive just randomly stopped working and just a few faint clicking sounds before it died. The current hard drive i will be installing on this P4 P4VMM2 mobo is a 40GB Seagate 7200. In the end do you think i can do a HD install from a USB stick with this P4VMM2 MOBO with a 40GB Seagate 7200 HD.
I'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.

I have downloaded Fedora and put it on a USB external drive for installing, but my computer doesn't seem to detect it (all I got is a blinking "_" on black screen).
My computer is a laptop Packard Bell "Easynote" SJ81 (with AMD Turion 64), and I have a Samsung Spinpoint SATA hard disk on it.
I want to install Fedora by live disk on virtualbox.
1. I ran the live disk, it works.
2. I click "Install to Hard Drive", it shows normal.
3. I complete the installition and reboot.
4. The live disk ran again, where is the OS installed on hard drive? or it was not installed at all?
I have a new Acer computer with Windows 7 on the 640 GB hard drive and 12 USB ports. I want to connect hard drives to USB ports and boot them by changing the boot drive in BIOS and using the boot setup. I have an old 250 GB hard drive with Windows XP and another old 60 GB hard drive with Linux Fedora 10 or 11. On my old computer Windows XP was on the C250 GB hard drive and Fedora was on the secondary 60 GB hard drive using GRUB. tried connecting my old 250 GB Windows XP hard drive through an IDE to USB enclosure to a USB port restarted my computer, changed the first boot drive in BIOS to USB. I saved and exited BIOS. I then pressed F12. This caused a popup of a display showing all the USB ports. I was able to recognise my 250 GB hard drive. I selected it. I got a message "GRUB loading, please wait". I then got a message, "Error 17".

I boot OK and start the install process and choose "Basic Devices" but it does not appear to detect my only hard drive (SSD). All it detects is the USB memory stick that I booted from.
I have Windows 7 on my disk. There is about 50GB free space which I planned to use for Fedora.

Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUpgraded one box that has 2 drives in it to 10.04 no problem.Tried doing my other box today, and it won't give me the option to format the /dev/sda drive (first drive), only gives me /dev/sdb as an option./dev/sdb is my media drive. /dev/sda is where the previous version of Ubuntu was installed and I need to be able to install to that drive.When I boot the live cd instead of installing, I see both drives under the "Places" menu, so I know ubuntu sees both drives.

Is there a safe way to "conserve" that very Windows installation as an image so I can recopy it later on? I'd like to clean out the computer completely to install Ubuntu afterwards. After using Ubuntu I want to install the old WindowsXP again as it was before. Is that even possible? Power on and XP boots as before? I mean driver, accounts, passwords etc? I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.
I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).
One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?
Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?
Is there a software utility out there for Ubuntu that can make a backup of the hard drive my Ubuntu 10.4 is installed on?
I have used Symantec Norton Ghost for Windows before. Is there a similar program for Ubuntu? I would also like to use the backup of the hard drive to reinstall on the same drive after a format.

I'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.
I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.
I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.
