I am using Ubuntu Meerkat on my Toshiba Laptop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a set of rather unusual problems on installing a new 500Gb hard drive on my F14 system, I've solved them, but they were that unusual that I thought I should share them in case anyone else gets the same thing! I'd been experiencing intermittent faults on one of my drives, (lock ups for no reason, occasional boot ups that failed due to ' disk unreadable errors' and other odd errors). I assumed that the drive was failing, but it always showed 'Heathy' on disk utility! This was the disk with the OS on, plus my main 'data' disk had some bad sectors, so I thought I'd buy a nice big 500Gb and reinstall the whole system.
I backed up all my data to an external 'USB' drive, opened the case, (a big old under the table 'desktop', why do they still call them 'desktops'?) shoved in the new SATA drive and rebooted, intending to format the new drive to EXT4 and partitioning it before installing F14 again! OOOOOOOOOW! Major drive failure, missing OS, whole list of SDB errors! Control D, to reboot, BIOS only sees one drive; SDA (I have three, two IDE and one SATA) plus the one I just put in makes four. I go into BIOS and discover that it not only cant see any of the other drives, but my two DVD drives are missing too!
Now I've been building my own systems and mucking about with computers since before you could buy them, and Ive never seen a problem like this one! At first I thought the new drive had screwed my system, for on removal, the problem persisted! Then I noticed that the IDE connector in drive SDB, (the long 40 pin job) was just slightly out of line with the back of the drive, pushed it firmly in and what do you know, everything works! We moved recently and I think the vibration was enough to loosen the connector to give intermittent faults, and pulling the cables about to get the new drive in, pulled it out further......
a friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

I have 2 ubuntu's: 1 on my ineternal hard drive, 1 on my external
When I startup without my ext drive =>GRUB error 21.
And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.
I've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! The hard drive I have is a Seagate FreeAgent desk 500GB
What is the recommended way to backup all files to an external hard drive? Should it be done through CLI or should a third party program be used?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an external harddrive of 500GB. It's almost fully loaded with TV series and movies. Nautilus says there's 60 GB remaining space. I just downloaded some movies, and copied it to this external hard drive. And here's the strange part, after I did this I only see a very small subset of all the movies I stored on that harddrive in nautilus. With 500 GB almost full, you can imagine there are quite some movies on it, but I only see 12 of them in nautilus.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a new 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive and mounted it in an external enclosure for use as an external backup drive. I had a whale of a time getting it formatted (ref post), but finally did by putting the bare drive into a laptop and used Ubuntu to partition and format as part of installing. Then I remounted the bare drive back into the enclosure and sure enough now I can now see the drive.
So now I want to erase the files from the backup drive. Problem is, Ubuntu won't let me delete or add any files. In Nautlis, if I select the files and "right click", Move to Trash is grayed out. If I press the delete button, nothing happens. If I try to copy a new file to the backup drive it says "permission denied". If I go into the Properties .> Permissions for the drive everything is grayed out so I can't change the permission. It also says "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions".
I am running dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7 but have decided to ditch windows and go permanently with Ubuntu. How do I save my data files (email addresses etc.) to an external hard drive for downloading back on to my laptop when I have reformated it.

I was thinking of using cp with the -R and -n options, but I have no idea what devices to refer to. I can't find any external hard drives in /etc/fstab and I'm not sure what /dev device each USB external hard drive uses. I just want to copy the files and the directories that they are in just as they are. There are no links and I do not want to do a backup.
