I have finally installed ubuntu 10.4 alongside windows 7.However, the grub doesn't show windows 7 so I can't boot into it.
Attached is a screenshot of "gparted". Windows 7 is installed on "sda2" and Ubuntu is on "sda6". How do I edit the grub to be able to load into windows 7?
And I faced another problem after installation. The pc kept freezing, I couldn't enter ubuntu nor use the live version on my usb stick. It kept freezing.
EDIT: I restarted and it froze again. I had to restart at least times before it allowed me into ubuntu. I'm wondering if it's a hard-disk issue since it's giving me a hard disk error whenever I login. Even though I've been running windows 7 for the past 9 months without any problem.
I have an old laptop that I installed EasyPeasy Lucid on. I have never used Grub2 as my other Ubuntu installs still use Grub Legacy. I have studied all the tutorials which instruct that the grub.cfg file should not be edited directly.This old laptop has one of the dreaded Intel graphics chips for which the kernel automatically loads the i915 module. i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen. Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is: Disk 1: Solid-State: Boot Partition SL6 LVM1: Root Partition Disk 2: Hard Drive: SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root) Disk 3: Hard Drive: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.
I am a new Ubuntu user, and I am attempting to set Windows 7 64 bit as my default OS in the boot loader instead of Ubuntu 10.10. I have entered the command gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal, and the menu.lst file does open. However, this file appears to be completely blank, which does not seem to make sense and is preventing me from changing the boot order.
I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. I was having problems with a video driver for ubuntu 10.10 64 bit so decided to try and down grade to 32 bit.I kind of carelessly just deleted the ubuntu partition with Gparted thinking that worse case scenario I would still have access to windows 7, since I was running a dual boot. This was a terrible idea and I ran into a bunch of problems. I managed to reinstall ubuntu and it runs fine. However when I try to load windows 7 it justs loops back to the grub screen. Trying to avoid reinstalling everything to get a proper boot

In my ubuntu 10.10 wubi installation, I used to get the option for windows 7. Last week, i added some updates through update manager. After that the windows 7 option is missing. How do i resolve it

When selecting this option it goes to a black screen with a - in the top left of the screen then the grub screen re-appears
i have installed debian but during installation my installed windows 10 was not found by the grubloader. i have installed windows 10 on my ssd and the debian on my hdd. nevertheless i installed the grub loader on the master boot record, because it said i could still configure it so it can boot both the windows and the debian.The debian installation is running fine. But i now want to boot the windows too. The problem is i have never worked with the grub loader yet and i am little scared that i will do something wrong.How can i get grub to load my windows ?

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a separate partition, with Grub being in it own partition. When I start the PC only windows Xp is available. So how do I get grub or Ubuntu load with windows xp boot loader? I tried with Live cd, the sudo grub but then it says command not found. I think its because Ubuntu 11.04 uses grub 2.
I have recently put Ubuntu on a friend's computer. I can access the windows partition and everything through Ubuntu. When I go to restart, his Windows XP Media Center Edition is in the boot loader's list but when I go to boot into it all I get is a black screen with a flash _ at the top left. It then just continues to sit there. I was wondering if maybe GRUB was looking in the wrong spot for the OS.
Before I installed Linux he was having problems with Windows XP, which is one reason why I switched him to Ubuntu. For some reason his computer was booting his HP Recovery partition instead of his Windows partition on start up. I was hoping by putting Ubuntu on and using GRUB as a boot loader I would be able to load Windows and Ubuntu side by side as it is on my machine. Windows still doesn't work though I hope people can help me out. I know this isn't really an Ubuntu question but I was unsure where to post boot loader questions.
i have windows xp operating system yesterday i installed ubuntu9.10 dual boot when the grub gets loaded it gives me four options as follows
1) linux...... 2) linux......recovery... 3) mem test... 4) windows...
when 1) linux is selected it loads ubuntu properly but. but when i select 4) windows a black page with GRUB written on the top left corner of the page is displayed and will not take any command... the only option i can do is hardboot.
A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition dev/sda2 Windows NTFS dev/sda3 Windows FAT
I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)
I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

I have grub 1.97 on carmic , with too many items in it. Start up manager , great for hardy and jaunty , is not working. What is the best way to remove unneeded items and change wait time for grub ?
I think this is the default view of GRUB2 as installed by some other OS, (I think Chameleon)... But even they must have done this by editing something in the original GNU GRUB 1.97. Is that possible to accomplish. If yes, how?

I am trying to edit grub so that it doesn't timeout the menu. I've found a lot of solutions to this where I edit menu.lst. However, this file is blank when I open it. I just upgraded to Lucid and kept a lot of my old grub settings (I had customized it somewhat). Also, I am not sure if I have grub or grub2. How can I figure this out?
I used to be a pro at editing Grub's menu.lst file so I could have my menu look clean, simple, and easy to read. Now that I have set up 10.04 (Working beautifully now after a couple setbacks) the menu.lst file is no longer where it used to be (/boot/grub/menu.lst)

I am currently installing the Ubuntu 10.04 Alternative, as I am having problem with video card. What I know is that I need to edit the Grub file in /etc/default/grub and add i915.modeset=1 for my video card. What I don't know is how to do that in the command line, what application should I use and how to save it? Also, if everything works well, I want to boot to gnome automatically. What I am looking for is a step by step instructions (as I can get lost).

Seem to have knocked out GRUB as normal loading screen does not appear anymore. Worse, I think I accidently installed grub to something labelled SDC5.
Cannot get anything except the "grub rescue" prompt. I'm not sure if using the LiveCD (9.10) can help. Have tried a few prompts from other threads but just ended up with mud splattered all over the place. I'm gathering I need to load grub, but can I do it using any grub rescue commands?
Would like to eliminate from the Grub menu of startup options all but the latest kernel update? Have made some attempts, but don't have authority is the message.
