I just need some clarification on the best upgrade path for me. I currently have Karmic installed with a separate partition for /home. I want to do a clean install of lucid with the CD.
What's the safest way to ensure my /home partition remains untouched? Should I install lucid overtop the karmic partition and then indicate a mount point for the other partition? or should I leave /home alone completely during installation and then just manually configure the mount point after install?
Edit: I had previously upgraded from jaunty to karmic via the update manager. This worked well but Karmic has felt very buggy overall so I feel a clean install might be best. although the audio is silent when the live cd boots :S
I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.
I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).
There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.
I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.
Is there anyone who can suggest if :
1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?
2. Any other way I can do this ??
I am dual booting windows 7 and Ubuntu, and since the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 Windows 7 won't load.I tried the solution posted in another thread with a similar problem but to no avail.[URL]
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using Karmic Koala 9.10 (amd64) on /dev/sdb6 and windows 7 on /dev/sda2. I mounted my windows 7 partition in Nautilus. I copied some files and made some folders from Nautilus onto my windows 7 partition. I tried booting into windows 7 but it failed on loading Windows 7. It then gave me a blue screen flashes and then restarted. The blue screen flashes so quickly i cannot determine the exact issue. I tried booting into windows 7 in Safe mode. It fails to load and gives what i believe is the same blue screen. I used to be able to read and write files onto my old XP and Vista partitions. Now with windows 7, I seems that I can't.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I upgraded to the 10.04 verion of xubuntu. Looks fine. However, I keep my data on an NTFS partition of my dual boot laptop, and am finding that I can't access it.
I have a symbolic link to that mounted partition, and when I click on it, I can see the first level of folders, but I can't execute them (even though they seem to be set to 777) and I can't open anything...
After upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 i can't boot windows partition. the only thing i get it's a blinking underscore after choosing it from grub. under ubuntu the window partition seams to be ok, and i can access every file.
this is my partition table:
sda1 - ntfs
sda2 - extended
sda5 - swap
sda6 - ext4 linux (0x83)
is there any tool to config grub? like yast on suse? (off the topic : is there any "grafic" version of grub?)
I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and now it's messed up my Windows Vista partition. When I try to load Windows it boots to a strange login menu with low resolution. It then takes me to a screen with options like Repair/Fix, Recovery, Complete Recovery... I'll click Repair and and then it will say No errors found, Shut down, Restart.

Since I all ready have windows installed with all the required files, directory, and registry is their any way ubuntu could pick those up for running windows programs. Instead of emulating them in wine. In theory I could install my programs under windows and run them under ubuntu if ubuntu recognized my windows partition as c drive instead of OS.

Ive been using ubuntu since Karmic and except for the HDMI i had no problems.On the 10.10.10 i upgraded to Maverick from the terminal with "do-release-upgrade". I noticed that command while i was at a friends house SSH'ing back home. When i came back i ran the command and took me a few hours to upgrade.And to my suprise i encountered 3 problems (Karmic -> Lucid = Zero)...
1) I cant use a few PPA's at the moment but its livable with.
2) Compiz broken but i can wait. Maybe might compile it myself if i get tired of Metacity.
3) My /home partition got halved.The first 2... Just inconvenience.The 3rd... I got 900GB's allocated to my /home so im missing quite a lot of space. I do remember the system reporting before that i had 900GB's but now it just says 485GB's.Heres what fdisk and df report

I have downloaded ubuntu RC 10.10. (or, if you're reading this tomorrow, remove "rc" it wont make any difference) I would like to mount the image that I downloaded and update my ubuntu 10.09 trough upgrade manager.
Is that possible? It appears that the software sources tool only accepts cd-rom.
Or I can add it manually in the sources file?
I was going to freshly format my laptop with Windows 7 x86_64 and Lucid Lynx x86_x64... I have a HUGE amount of media (music, videos, pictures, documents) and I don't keep all of it on my external harddrive.
The plan is to have the basic 2 partitions for Windows 7 and Ubuntu but I would like to have a 3rd partition that is just for media that I could share between the two OSes. I guess I would create symbolic links in the Ubuntu Home folder to point to the partition with media and in Windows I could probably just add those folders to libraries (unless someone knows how to move the User folder to another parition?)
What should I format this new partition as? NTFS? It needs to support files larger than 4GB and Windows can't read/write to basically anything.
Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Is there a program that will reread the partition table and update the kernel even if one of the unmodified partitions is mounted? I installed my system on one partition, then I added another with free space. Now I want to format the second partition, but the kernel doesn't know about it yet. I tried sfdisk -R /dev/sda, but it refuses while the root partition is mounted. Is there anyway I can avoid rebooting?

- first drive is the system
- I mounted the 2nd drive (ext3) on a folder, but the Size is 941.89 MB instead of 149Go

Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded successfully last night from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx, but have no sound now. After searching around I can see that this is a fairly common problem. But none of the proposed solutions that work for other people have yet worked for me.
If I type 'alsamixer' at the command line, everything looks fine. There are no 'MM's indicating something being muted. I tried removing and reinstalling alsamixer and pulseaudio with no success. Edited lines 45 and 46 of /etc/pulse/default.pa with no luck.
I have a dual boot system with Win XP and Ubuntu (using grub boot menu). I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.04 (Jaunty) to 10.04 (Lucid) and now I cannot boot into Ubuntu - I just get a desktop with no icons or disk activity. I think this may have something to do with the fact that I answered 'no' when asked whether to replace my menu.1st file, and possibly some others. So my boot menu still refers to 9.04.

I've tried changing the repository and I get the same message, but I can log in to the Internet, and download and install any program from the repository. I wonder if others have upgraded their Lucid kernel using the deb [URL]..repository. I have been using the repository for some time now without any apparent problems, and have gone from 2.6.36-1, through 2.6.37-10, and am now on 2.6.37-12.
All of these seem to work with no problems at all, but I am just wondering if other users can also report success, or if there are any trip-ups that might occur. I still keep updating the "standard" kernel from the main repos, ie 2.6.32-27, so I have that as a backup, but I'm just very curious about other people's findings.
