I have finally decided to restore grub on my netbook after installing windows 7, and I can boot into UNR just fine but the Jolicloud option is now gone. How do I add it back to the GRUB menu.lst?

I've got two drives, one with Ubuntu 10.4 and one with Win 7. My BIOS boots to the Ubuntu drive, which has Grub2 installed. Apparently though, since I have Win7 on the other drive, Grub doesn't find it and won't generate a boot menu entry for it. I'm attempting to just add one to the menu by editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom, but those attempts aren't quite working. That adds an entry to the menu, but apparently I've got a parameter wrong somewhere.

A couple of days ago, I installed Ubuntu on it using the Windows installer, so that I could choose between Ubuntu and XP at boot time. That's been working great.Today, I read about Jolicloud and decided to try it. I assumed (bad move!) that it would add itself to my list of choices at boot time, so that I could choose between Ubuntu, XP, and Jolicloud.Well, instead, I can now choose between Jolicloud and XP. Ubuntu has vanished from the boot menu.Is my Ubuntu installation gone? Or is simply a GRUB issue? Or an MBR issue? Is there any way for me to get back to my Ubuntu installation??? I had important work on there that I would like to recover!

I've using win7 and 9.10 for a few months now. Today I decided to install yet another OS, but during installation a new grub was written to the mbr. Result: I can no longer boot Ubuntu.This is what my menu.lst looks like

Mandriva has it own boot partition on sda1 (ext3) Ubuntu boots in /boot on ubuntu's / partition which is sdb6
Mandriva / partition is: sda5 (ext4)
UUID for Mandriva boot partition is: bf53ebd1-4698-4522-ae0d-f9465aa2f0a3 (sda1)

Ive made a file which I have put in /etc/grub.d/ so each time I run update-grub2 it also includes this script.

I have an external hard drive (500GB) that I partitioned and would like to use the second partition to add extra storage space on the computer running 10.04 server (100 GB HD). /dev/sdc2 is the partition I would like to add via LVM to the 100GB HD; dev/sdc1 contains data I already use.

i had ubuntu and slackware installed together for a while, i just needed xp to do some native language work so i installed it on my extra partition but then i messed up the grub menu, however i reinstalled it from live cd.. but now the problem is i dont know how to add a xp in that.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP Media Centre Edition system.On the Step 4 of the installation which usually gives you the option to partition the disk but it only gives me the option to Erase the entire disk or specify partition manually, although this also doesn't allow anything other than totally erasing the disk. I'd ideally like to keep my Windows and I have installed Ubuntu before (but 9.10) on a different system.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have my machine booting Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit), and OpenSUSE 11.3 (64bit). All good. When I added OpenSUSE it was really easy.There is an option not to install grub. I ticked the box and once installed I simply re-booted into Ubuntu and 'sudo update-grub'. Voila, job done. (Interestingly it uses the same /swap as Ubuntu so that is convenient, an accident, long story, and off topic!) Is there a similar option in Ubuntu where during install I can choose not to install grub and use the same method as I did with OpenSUSE?
Also, I am wanting to use the existing Ubuntu /home and /swap partitions. How do I go about that? I will do some further research on that bit and no doubt find the answer but I'm figuring I create just one partition, /, during install and somehow direct it to use the existing /home and /swap. Issue is, won't it create a /home directory inside the / partition if I don't allocate a /home partition during install?
Reason I'm doing this? I have a Realtek wireless card that has never behaved. I ended up emailing Realtek only to discover the driver/firmware wasn't suitable for 64bit systems. Therefore I am going to attempt to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 32bit version and see if I can't get the card behaving there.
I had thought of Virtualbox for doing this (which I have installed but haven't used yet) but decided against it only to save time when booting. I would need to boot the 64bit Ubuntu then the 32bit Ubuntu inside that. Waste of ten seconds!
I installed 9.10, and then upgraded to grub2. This went without issue. I am now in the process of installing 10.10. I have the partitions set up as follows,
sda1 primary 8GB swap
sda5 logical 10gb / for 9.10
sda6 logical 20gb /home for 9.10
with grub2 installed on the mbr of sda. I then added
sda7 logical 10gb / for 10.10
sda8 logical 20gb /home for 10.10
This seems like the best config for a multiboot setup.I was not going to install grub with 10.10, but just boot back into 9.10 and run update-grub. The only options are to install grub on sda, or on one of the logical parts. There is no option in the menu to not install grub.what should I do now?
I have installed Windows 7 64-bit, Fedora 13 64-bit and Windows XP 32-bit. I had to install the 32-bit XP for some driver issues I have with obscure devices I own. Windows 7 and Fedora both boot with no issues but Windows XP is not the in the GRUB loader as it was installed after Fedora. I have tried adding a few entries to the menu.lst file but my attempts failed. The output of fdisk -l is here

This is no huge problem, but it is rather annoying to me. I am using the 10.4 beta, and whenever I get a large update (like a updated kernel) GRUB adds another boot option to the menu (I'm dual booting Vista and Ubuntu.) So my GRUB menu looks something like this when I turn my computer on:

I have been helped by repo in this post [URL]..Here's a quick resume: I made changes in the grub menu for just one boot I selected the first option Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-27-generic edited the Linux /vmlinux ro quiet splash by adding irqpoll to the end. I rebooted and the system booted correctly into the GUI.
I then tried to edit the /etc/default/grub file by booting into the recovery mode, opening a terminal, using command sudo vi /etc/default/grub and adding irqpoll to the end of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX DEFAULT="quiet splash". Followed by update-grub to update the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file
Unfortunately when I try to reboot I find that the system will not boot and hangs as before on the purple screen after a logon. I know that I have edited the /etc/default/grub file correctly because I have confirmed this by reviewing the file. So my question is why does the "one boot method" work but the edit file method not work ? I must be doing something wrong.
I recently downloaded/installed Gparted as I want to resize my ubuntu to more HDD space in partition and reduce NTFS partition size. Is there any faster way to do gparted in ubuntu? I remembered in previous versions of ubuntu that gparted had MBR but I can't find info to do this.

I tried to install Kubuntu 11.04 using LVM, and I selected manual partitioning setup during the install, but there is no option for setting up LVM. Am I using the wrong version, i.e. it only works with the server edition? I saw somewhere that it may magically become available in expert mode...Is that true? View 2 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

Both systems used Wubi installations of Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop for x86 on Windows XP. In both cases, Ubuntu completed the installation process. Upon reboot, we have the options to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, once we enter into Grub, only the Windows XP option shows.

I have a 235 HDD and it is partitioned like this:
C: 150 GB (Windows) NTFS
D: 70 GB (Data) NTFS
G: 15 GB (for my not yet installed Linux) NTFS
I also followed this tutorial and now I have some sort of LiveCD inside my USB: [URL]. So, now I have a pen drive with an Ubuntu LiveCD and a 15GB ready for my Ubuntu!
This is what I do:
1 - connect pen to computer
2 - turn on computer
3 - pen start running and I load Linux like a LiveCD (yey!)
4 - Linux loads and I wait
5 - I click "Install linux"
6 - I configure the language, time zone and keyboard with no problems
7 - Disk partitioning ... it offers me 2 choices:
7.1 - Erase entire disk and install Ubuntu
7.2 - Manually partitioning: but drive C:, D: and G: do not appear!!!
I want to install my Linux on driver G:, but I don't find a "Install Linux in this specific partition" option!
How do I add another Windows XP SATA Hard Drive to this Grub menu, on a USB Stick?:

1) was running ubuntu 10.10 64bit with burg
2) Installed windows 7.. it got removed.
3) So boot via ubuntu usb and ran
sudo mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/home
sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/boot
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
reboot
now its stuck at grub> .. I am unable to fix this issue How can I get my grub / burg running again with windows as option currently to boot i do

I am sure I have grub2
In previous versions, there was an 'advanced' button where you could select NOT to install grub. I can't find that in the latest Natty release iso's. Is it no longer an option? And if not, WHY? I find myself reloading Natty quite often on a test partition to play with various parameters in my attempt to get it working as needed. But I'd really prefer to have the option to no reload grub.
View 9 Replies View Related- Off a vanilla F11 livecd install, I stuck a 3 at the end of my grub line to boot into runlevel 3. I have been doing this for as long as I can remember (since Fedora 3). However now it seems to break and gives me a GRUB error. I press e to edit, and delete the 3. BUt it still throws and error?!?!?!?! Has this facility (ie sticking a number at the end of the grub line) been changed and why is my grub line now broken even though I've gone back and deleted the 3?
- If I install Fedora 12 beta now, will yum take me all the way into production when it goes live (assuming no killer bugs encountered), I'm guessing thats a yes?
I guess this is the right forum category for this. Am using the preupgrade method to go from F10 to F11.Downloading packages now. View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora 14 over an old Ubuntu (heron, I think). The old install used a single partition for both / and /home; and I wanted to try to avoid reinstalling /home if possible (but yes, I did back it up). I chose the anaconda option to shrink the old Ubuntu /, and created a new LVM for the Fedora /. This seemed to work perfectly. I mounted the old / on '/host' (an old naming habit), and then mounted individual home dirs into /home using autofs. All seemed fine. However, on my first reboot after the autofs mounts fsck failed. The current situation is as follows:

Resize2fs tells me to run fsck, and complains of a short read if I try to force. Fsck seems to run fine if I say 'no' to the abort prompt, but doesn't change the problem. Filesystem is ext3. Started with debugfs. First used icheck and ncheck to work out which file(s) had been written to the non-existent blocks past the partition size. Fortunately, there was only one. Deleted that file (can restore it from backup later). Quit debugfs. Now resize2fs -p -f worked perfectly. fsck after resizing was clean. Reboot seems happy. As for the origin of the problem, I would guess there's a rounding bug in the code anaconda uses to shrink partitions.
How do I reconfigure grub when adding a disk to a machine where both disks have their own MBRs? I have two volumes:Disk 1 - actually mirrored RAID-1 drives managed by ICH9R on the motherboard Disk 2 - a single drive managed by ICH9R on the motherboard, but without RAID. Disk 1 is the "old" disk containing WinXP on the first partition. The MBR of Disk 1 was created by Windows. Disk 2 was built on the machine while Disk1 was unplugged. Disk2 has Win7 on /dev/sda1 and Fedora 12 on /dev/sda7. Obviously, Disk 2 has grub installed on its own MBR.
When I plug-in both Disk 1 and Disk 2 at the same time, I would like to reconfigure grub so that it gives me the option to switch between WinXP on Disk 1, Fedora on Disk 2 and Win7 on Disk 2. (I may also want to install Ubuntu on another partition of Disk 1, but that's a separate issue.) The problem is that when I plug in Disk 1, Disk 1 becomes /dev/dm-0 and Disk 2 becomes /dev/sdc (instead of /dev/sda as when I installed it). (I don't think I can switch this order because I'm worried that Windows will become confused.) So, how do I keep all partitions the same and get them all to work from grub? On which MBR will I need to install grub? How do I configure it to see all 3-4 of my operating systems? Do I fix grub from the Fedora LiveCD?
