I installed 10.04, and now i cant get back to windows. I have Ubuntu on one hard drive and windows on the other one. When i try to boot up, unless i go to the boot menu and select the hard drive with Ubuntu on it i get the message boot-mgr is missing, press Ctr - Alt - Del to restart.

I checked the BIOS to make sure it ran the correct drive first but no go. I tried reinstall ubuntu but it doesnt seem to work. I dont have windows running on this machine.
I tried to dual boot Fedora on a vista system. Now fedora boots as primary and when i try to boot vista i get the message, bootmgr missing control, alt, delete to restart.
View 10 Replies View RelatedThough I kinda do wish that I could just fully migrate to Fedora (or Linux in general), I still do need Vista for some things (like, until I can get this mess with my tablet and speakers sorted out). However, when I tried to boot into Vista this morning (by selecting "other" in GRUB) it said "BTMNGR is missing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart."
Will I have to use the Vista Home Premium installation disc to fix this? Surely, telling it to automatically fix startup problems would work, right? I'll try later today PS This problem could also be related to my other 'yum update' problems. All of my problems started when I performed a whole kernel update, so that could also be why I can't boot into vista.
I don't know what kind of problem it is. seems strange. I was used to using windows xp previously. Recently, i installed Ubuntu 11.04. i used ubuntu more than windows- rarely i peeped into windows. BUT, 3/4 days ago, when i tried to run xp, it only shows a message(on a black window/screen):
"NTLDR MISSING PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART"
If i press ctrl+alt+del, it only restarts and if i again try to run xp, it shows the above message again; BUT windows xp doesn't run. i don't know what to do.
I've been fiddling about with vortexbox (the one before 1.4 I think), for a while. This is a music ripping and server rpm setup using Fedora 11 as the base.
As it was on a test machine, decided to try changing the logical volume sizes of LogVol00 and LogVol02 to fit a few more cd's on 02 before getting a new pc (just to see how it works).
Logged on and opened up the graphic version of lvm (using gnome). Then selected the LogVol02 logical volume, select edit, changed name to LogVol02-Storage, saved and logged out. Rebooted vortexbox since then its been unable to start properly (is this a kernel panic?).
Read up a lot on lvm on the net, have access to Fedora 11 disk 1, so logged on. Eventually managed (I thought to) to change LogVol02-Storage to LogVol02 using lvrename.
However, still refuses to boot completely.
The message it gives is as follows (sort of): Welcome to Fedora Press '1' to enter interactive startup

Loving vortexbox appart from this. Will it be easier just to reinstall everything? If so, is there a way of listing all the changes I've done so I can reproduce (I'm thinking of just looking at all the commands I ran on the CLI).
Otherwise, is there a way of listing all of the commands I ran in terminal and piping them into a file so I can see what I need to do to rebuild after reinstalling?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis morning I attempted to 'clean' up some old files/programs from my dual mounted (Vista/10.04) laptop. All seemed ok until I tried to run Vista and I got the following:

I then tried to reboot into Ubuntu but it keeps trying to load windows. It looks like I have somehow lost my grub, so now I have lost Ubuntu and Vista. I tried my Vista Start Up disk and at the command prompt I entered:
Bootrec.ext /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
on restart it went back to the 'missing or corrupt' information. Is there some way I get get back to normal?
I'm setting up an Ubuntu server and I keep getting strange problems with my editor.I'm not sure if this is because my keyboard configuration is wrong or I screwed up the installation but regardless it's quite frustrating.

I gave up on XP - not the place for long sob stories - and decided to try Ubuntu. I know nothing, so I chose the 10.04.1 because it said stable... made a CD, took it to the problem computer, tried several times to load, then noticed that "Wubi" loaded from windows. I hunted down a 10.04.1 Wubi, and it seemed to read rather well. No error messages, told me to remove the disc. I did, told me to reboot. I chose ubuntu and it froze with the words :

I have been running Ubuntu with no problems for a while now. Earlier today, I began to download some updates. When I came back to the computer, there was a prompt to restart, but also an error message. I didn't catch the error message until I had clicked the restart button. Now, when I try to access Ubuntu from the dual-boot menu (I run Vista as well), I keep getting the following error message.

I was playing with the mysql my.cnf file yesterday, trying to move my database files to my dropbox folder so I can use the database on my other machine. All I changed was the datadir setting to point to my dropbox folder. I also moved my mysql data files there.
When I tried to restart mysql and test the new location it said my mysqld.sock was missing. I searched and searched the web and my filing system for it but I have no idea what's happened to it?? I have even tried changing the datadir path back and reinstalling mysql but that doesn't seem to work either.
Today I installed Fedora (I need it for school), but not everything seems to work fine Before installing Fedora on my Macbook I had a triple booting machine: Mac OSX snow leopard, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. (using rEFIt) All of them where working. Since I installed Fedora on the 4th partition I can only boot Mac OSX. View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.
I'm trying to install Fedora 11 for the first time. The plan is to create a 10Gig partition on which i would put Fedora and leave Vista on the other partition. I have successfully done this however when i reboot to try and get to VISTA i am seeing an error message saying that BootyMgr is missing....Can you help me with this?

The hard drive is 250 gb: Vista boot 157 gb partition; a partially-occupied 33 gb partition which was designated as swap-space; a newly partitioned and ext3 formatted 30gb for the Ubuntu installation. I believe there is also a hidden partition ~20 gb with "hidden" system info. During installation I received an error message concerning the swap space partition, which forced me out of the installation and back to the ubuntu partition manager screen. Now in Vista my 33 and 30 gb partitions are missing. Is there anyway I can get back to pre-Ubuntu state?

but on next boot i was not able to enable the wireless either by the slide button or fn+f5 which is the key for enabling it the wireless then on some forum i got advise that i can only re-enable by installing windows because lenovo drivers are available for only windows for this model... my question is that is there any solution for it in debian and also there is one more problem that i've to press fn+f8 twice on each boot for enabling the touchpad...
I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

I was using my 1TB hdd to dual-boot linux, windows, and for storage...Yesterday, I imaged the linux partition, and restored it to an approximately 66GB partition I created on a 150GB hdd...Besides the 66GB partition, the rest of the 150GB hdd is 'unallocated space'... That's when the above message started...Below are screenshots of the fstab and partitions as they are now...

Had to reboot, no problem worked just fine. Shut the machine down and two hours later the machine starts, goes through Bios, says booting OS, then restarts. just stays in this loop.I also installed virtualbox, which opened fine when tested. I did not add a new OS.I re-inserted the usb drive i did the original install from and it the install program loaded fine.Is there a way to role back to the last known good configuration?
View 1 Replies View RelatedReboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.
I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA couple of months ago I bought a new Dell laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Rather than strip the hard drive and go with Ubuntu exclusively, I left W7 on and set up Ubuntu 10.04 as a dual boot installation. All was well for a month or more and now suddenly W7 won't boot. The Windows error message I get is The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible I've purged and reinstalled Grub2 several times with no luck. Also tried Windows fixmbr which allowed W7 to boot but made Ubuntu inaccessible. Below is the output of the boot_info_script.

I've tried to install 11.04 on my Macbook Pro (5,4) today. I had two drives in the machine, an SSD as my main drive, and an HD. I installed rEFIt before attempting to install Ubuntu. I moved my Snow Leopard install to the secondary HD & made sure I could boot to it. Then, I used the live CD & gparted to clear the 1st drive (the SSD), create the swap space, create the Ubuntu partition, and launch the install, where I used what I had just created on the SSD. The install completed okay (but with no option to select where the GRUB installer went, like some tutorials tell you to look out for). This seemed to go okay, so I went to restart at the end of the install, but the machine didn't come back up.
Instead, the power came on & I could hear the drives, but the screen stayed black, the battery light flashed a load of times really quickly (too quickly to count, but at least 10 times), and then the machine let out 1 long beep and stayed on the black screen. I forced it to power down & tried again, and just got a black screen, the battery light shining steadily, and no beep. I forced it to power down again, and got the same, then again, and got the same, and then a 4th time, which actually allowed me to boot. And this has been the pattern since then. I shut down, and my first attempt to restart gets me the flashing light and the beep, with the black screen. I try 3 more times to power down and restart, and just get the black screen. Then, *every* time on the 4th time, I'm allowed to boot.
The same routine will be gone through the next time I power down and try to restart. I've tried totally clearing the disk in gparted, restoring the OSX install from TimeMachine, everything I could think of, but all to no avail. Finally, thinking that maybe the OSX install I had safe on the secondary HD might still be okay (looking at it in gparted showed an EFI boot section & everything), I opened up my MBP, swapped the drives around so that the HD is now the main drive, and the SSD the secondary, and renamed the drives so that the primary HD is now called 'Macintosh HD' and is first in the list of drives that appear when I manage to boot each 4th attempt. But, to my great disappointment, I still got exactly the same error. Can anyone offer any advice on how to:
1) Get my machine booting to a safe Snow Leopard install on the (now primary) HD?
2) Safely install Ubuntu on the (now secondary) SSD?
Obviously the first is a top priority, as I need my machine in order to work! Then I can concentrate on moving my dev environment to Ubuntu, which I've been dying to do for ages.
