I've Intellij Idea and Netbeans installed on my Ubuntu desktop. Both worked fine while I was on 10.10.After upgrading to 11.04 both of them became irresponsive to Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V/Ctrl+{Any alphabet letter} combinations. However these combinations work in non-Java apps (e.g. gedit).Besides that Ctrl+Alt+L (Lock screen) is not handled by the system, no matter what application is active.Disabling unity does not help. Starting in ubuntu classic w/o effects does not help either.

A strange problem has surfaced with my CentOS 5.5 Rackspace Cloud Server. I was doing OK until today. For some strange reason, whenever I login to the server, using ssh and pub/priv key authorization, or password authorization for that matter, the letter E (that's an uppercase 'e') does not echo at the prompt line, it just beeps like an error. At the login prompt, before signing in, the letter E is echoed to the terminal window. I'm using an iMac, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the standard Mac terminal application.
This behavior does not occur when using the terminal app locally, i.e., logged into the iMac, and all other applications on the Mac are OK with 'E's. To further test the issue, I used the Java console app that Rackspace provides through a browser (I use Firefox, latest revision). Before logging in, the login prompt will accept and echo 'E'. As soon as I authenticate and get to a system prompt, anytime I press a Shift-e, I get a beep and no echo to the terminal command line. It doesn't matter who I login as, root or another user.
To further confuse things, if I start up an instance of nano in that very same terminal window, nano accepts and echoes the 'E'! Using nano, I've created a short bash script file:
#!/bin/bash
echo "ABCDEFG"
and it echoes properly when run.
Any clues as to where I might look to resolve this bizarre behavior?
My getinfo.sh system specs are here here.

I have been searching for some time for a font that can be used to put together letters and words for examples to get children learn how to write. I need letters with and without arrows pointing in the direction of how to write the letter. This font will be used for creating worksheets for letters and words. I need to be also able to change the colour of the font to really light gray so that children can also trace the letters.
I found alot of commercial software but was looking something thats free and can be used by a tuition company/tutor to print materials for their students without any license restrictions. In a worst case I can blow up individual letters in open office and manually draw the arrows but would be great if a font exists that can be used as would give great scope in future projects.

I tried installing lubuntu 'over' ubuntu, but am now locked out. Basically, the login screen loads, I've tried entering my username and password, but it doesn't work. I'm not really sure of my username as Ubuntu would automatically fill it in for me. But lubuntu isn't auto-loading my username, so I've been trying to enter all types of variations. I am 100% of my password though
I tried getting help at lubuntu's chat, but that's been kind of hard since there aren't that many people responding. The lubuntu people had me go into recovery mode (2.6.38-8 recovery) and so that would go smoothly. But when the screen of the options of resume, clean, dpkg, failsafex, etc, I cannot move the selector down. So basically, the orange selector is stuck at resume. Whenever I press the down key, the computer runs some lines, and I cannot go back to the list of options. The list is still visible, but can't select any of the options.
If I press the 'end' button, that executes something (probably the last option in the list), and I shut down the pc when it did that. The other arrow keys do nothing. The tab button manages to move the selector from the list to 'Ok' and 'Cancel.' But I cannot move the selector down.. TL;DR: I need to either get into recovery mode, or find a way to get my exact username lubuntu thinks it is.

i am having a problem with the installation with ubuntu 10.10 during the installation, i was entering my setup info (login password, timezone, etc.) when everything stopped working, it wouldnt let me continue, the forward button wouldnt work. i let it set for a good 30 minutes but it wouldnt do anything.
so unable to continue, i restarted and tried to boot from my cd drive and now it wont boot from the drive, and since i let ubuntu delete my windows partition, i cant boot from it so i basically have a blank hard drive. the cd drive will boot other cds because i booted hirens boot cd in an attempt to make sure the cd drive was functioning and ran diagnostics to make sure the drive was alright.

I just installed debian-6.0.1a-i386-netinst yesterday on my Dell Dimension 4100. I have a serial keyboard and mouse, which both worked fine during the install and the keyboard allowed me to enter the correct passphrase. After I enter the passphrase the PC continues to boot up, and it gets to a black screen with small fuzzy/distorted "DELL" logo's on the top part of the screen going from left to right.
What is wrong with my PC? What can I do to troubleshoot this?
I really would like to get debian up and running on this desktop

The way I organize all my files into their folders, they add up quickly. I like having a quick way to keep more frequently accessed folders at the top of the list in explorer. In windows, folder "[zippidy do da]" would appear above folder "aardvark" because of the brackets, but Ubuntu's file browser ignores the brackets, making my old method ineffective. I could put a zero in front of such folders

I'm pretty novice on Ubuntu.I've tried it out on a virtual machine and it has attracted me. So now I want to set up Ubuntu on one of the three partitions of my hard disk.Though after booting the disc and selecting "Install Ubuntu",a black backgrounded blank page appears with a blinking dash on its uppermost left. And nothing happens that neither CPU nor disc driver nor HDD runs, the machine simply stops. I don't exactly know what information is required for this problem, however can supply some screenshots:

I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?

I would like to use Japanese kana (hiragana, katakana, kanji) on Ubuntu but everything that I've tried to get it set up and running isn't working. The Spanish that I have set up is working perfectly so far.
I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.

I can not find my hard drive letters in ubuntu. In the "computer" window it just shows it as "file system". I want to run chkdsk on another hdd that I connected to the computer. It shows up as 2 icons, one called "256 GB Solid-State Disc:256GB Filesystem and the other called "256 GB Solid-State Disc:System Reserved. This disc was installed in another computer as the only hdd and I had problems with the computer so I removed it and installed disc drive. I want to check this ssd here in ubuntu to see if there are any bad sectors etc. All the instructions I can find say to Type "Run chkdsk /[drive letter]" (without quotes) in the terminal win. I entered "sudo lshw" and the drive shows as "*-disc:1" I tried using 1, disc-1 and *-disc:1 as drive letters , example, "Run chkdsk/1" (without quotes), and I get command not found for all 3. There must be a drive letter to these discs as in windows I would guess, it appears that way as I search the net. NOTES, this computer has ubuntu 10.04 installed only and has 3gb native sata mobo, no microsoft at all. I want to check the quality of this ssd as much as possible and can overwrite or delete any and all files on it, reformat it etc. If it checks out good, I may remove the existing hdd on the computer and install this one as the only hdd and install ubuntu and use it a while to make sure it works fine, then remove it and install it to the original computer where i wanted it in the first place. That computer has win7 ultimate on it, but what matters is that one has the 6gig native sata mobo and that is where this ssd will work at its fastest

Since 2 days, when I type the lowercase 'a' letter in a terminal, nothing is written (it's not the case for the uppercase 'A' letter).
The matter appears with all terminal's software (guake, Terminal, xterm...).
The only way for me to type the 'a' letter is to type 'Insert' key before.
I tried many solutions but the matter is still here.
Here, there is some clarifications and some solutions I tried:
-If I copy and paste a text, 'a' don't appears. For example, if i try to copy and paste
'sudo apt-get install'
'sudo pt-get instll' will appears
-The matter appears 2 days ago. Before that, I removed the .gconf file
-It's not a fresh installation of ubuntu but an update from karmic to lucid. When i was under karmic, I was using KDE. Then I did an upgrade, then I tried Xubuntu and Lubuntu and finally I moved to Ubuntu. The first week under Ubuntu (Gnome) was without any matter and 2 days ago, this matter appeared.
-I tried this following command line:
xmodmap -pke >fichier.conf
and the file called "fichier.conf" (I'm french) contains this line:
keycode 24 = a A a A ae AE ae AE
-When I type this line:
printf "x61
"
a 'a' appears in my terminal.
-In tty1 and all the other programs, 'a' appears without any trouble
-I tried with other users in my computer but the matter is still the same no matter wich user I use.
-I tried to change fonts of my environment and I also tried to change fonts only for the terminal but whithout success.
-I tried to change the layout of my keyboard.

I've a Windows and a Ubuntu Machine on the same network.I've a shared folder on my Windows machine.I need to permanently map it to drive letter in Ubuntu, just like a hard disk.Think of mapping a network drive in windows, I need to do the exact same thing. Is there a way? I've honestly gone through about 500 posts explaining different ways and I go none working. Is there a GUI for this?I know there is something called mounting, but I need it to be a drive letter for my program to understand.
