Chipset: FRU PN 49P1599 (Intel 845G)
I booted Hardy, because Karmic detects no screen, after trying to adjust to a previously recognized resolution. As good as it is, does it seem like some basic computer functions just do NOT improve?

It will not allow me to change the resolution to something other than 800x600 or lower. 8.04 allowed me to set the resolution to as high as 1600x1200 using the same monitor/graphics card.

I doesn't look nice for me. The logo of Kubuntu is too big and the colors are not the true colors of the Kubuntu Boot up screen.

If I run xrandr in a shell tool it only shows 640x480 available.xorg.conf has "1024x768" "800x600" & "640x480" available.Have search the web but nothing I've found works.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am installing CentOS 5.6 on an old PC with a small LCD monitor. Anaconda did not determine that the resolution of the monitor is limited and it configured the display to 1280 x 1024 which is out of range for the monitor. So I connected a different monitor and completed the install then set the resolution to 1024 x 768 which the monitor should accept. I connected the small monitor but it still displays "OUT OF RANGE" when the PC boots.
I then connected to the PC over ssh and changed /etc/inittab to start in runlevel 3 and rebooted the PC. At the moment I am downloading the necessary updates with yum and pondering the problem. Some Internet searching tells me that I can adjust the resolution with Xconfigurator. That beings back old memories of Red Hat 7.x.
However, Xconfigurator is not present on the CentOS 5.6 install. So... short of shutting down the PC I am on now and transferring the monitor back to the old PC and trying another resolution etc. Is there a way to change the resolution without running the gnome gui and using the System; Preferences;Display Resolution tool? I am not running any proprietary video drivers on the PC.

I have an HTPC mini computer, in which I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx, and I tried all screen resolutions I could possibly use through the settings. And the top, bottom, left & right hand sides are out of the resolution. So for example the top and bottom taskbars are out of the screen. I'll be posting a photo later on today to show you people exactly what I mean. So that I can have Ubuntu's screen would fit all inside my LCD screen ? The HTPC runs an nVidia graphics card.

Up until 11.1 Opensuse struggled with loading this correctly. in 11.1 & 11.2 all was well. A couple of minor tweaks in sax2 and it worked perfectly. Now hat sax2 has gone I'm not sure how to make these minor tweaks.
My problem is I have been forced to a screen resolution of 1024X768 VGA Following the readme file adding nomodeset at boot fixes the problem but of course forces me back to an old video driver with pretty poor performance. Is there any way I can change the screen resolution and set the correct monitor - any GUI replacement for sax2? Krandrtray will only let me set a max res of 1024x768. I need to set res to 1280x1024

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 x86 with Xfce4 desktop enivorment. I got an old Nvidia 6600 GT. I'm on a 21" IBM CRT, and i know that it's good for 2048x1536 @ 75hz.
I know that it can handle 30-130 khz Horizontal and 40-170 hz Vertical.
I also know that i would like to be able to use 1600x1200 @ 85hz.
Right now I'm just not able to go past 1024x768 @ 50hz. I've installed the restricted nvidia driver from the popup restricted driver menu, also tried to downgrade to an earlier driver, did'nt work, then i upgraded again to the newest driver that was easily available through Envyng-gtk. Still no more resolution choiches.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg just don't work. Nothing happens when i write it in the terminal.

after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 i received the Unity as a default. with the help of this forum i figured out how to get the Gnome.i would like to try the Unity but when i am switching to Unity i cant get the resolution i need to my external monitor.i have an application, Switch resolution that doesn't work under the Unity but does work under Gnome.i can change the resolution in the external monitor to its native resolution but than i get the upper panel in a good resolution and below only black without any window or anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe last update for 10.04 has really screwed my desktop. Several of the icons are off the bottom of the screen. All icons are too large. Can't adjust the screen resolution. Panel at the bottom when placed in autohide is so sensitive that it is almost impossible to use. Jumps up and down like a flea on a hot stove. I have reduced the sensitivity of the mouse to the minimum with no effect. There is no excuse for so many troublesome updates. The problem with using an external monitor with a laptop has never been resolved by Ubuntu.

Install went through smoothly in both my laptop and an old Dell Optiplex GX 270.
Screen looks fine on laptop but terrible on the Dell. It's stuck on Refresh rate of 60Hz and flickers pretty bad. 60Hz is the only rate offered! How can I change the refresh rate to ~65-72Hz like is possible on earlier Ubuntu versions to ease eye strain?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 on an Intel Atom mainboard (Intel D945GCLF2) with CRT that has been running Ubuntu 9.x previously.
Both, Desktop live CD / installer and alternate install CD cause the screen to go black (and the status LED blinks).
I was able to get a bit further into the boot process with nomodeset as parameter with the Live CD, unfortunately I can't pass GRUB any parameters now that I have used the alternate Install CD by pressing 'e', it just boots.
So now I have Ubuntu installed, I get a terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1 but I don't know what I need to do now or how to adjust resolution or video settings from command line.
I know there are many threads on similar issues but I can't find anything that will work. Not sure if I need drivers or what to do - I feel really stupid as I should be able to get this right but I am at a brick wall. Basically I have a 20inch monitor hooked up to the on-board graphics card and cannot get higher resolution than 900 x 600. It should be at 1280 by 1240. This is a brand new install with the latest Ubuntu 10. Under monitor preferences its says 'unknown' for monitor type and I don't have any driver disk for this screen but never needed one previously.

I have just installed Fedora 10 and all went well except that the resolution is set to 1024x768, which is not cool on a 22" HP w2207h LCD monitor. When I bring up Monitor Resolution Setting the Mirror Screens is checked and 1024x768 is the highest resolution. If I uncheck Mirror Screens and select "Laptop" I am able to select 1680x1050, but it now has my desktop in the upper left hand corner of my monitor. Should I be looking for a driver for my i845G graphics processor?
PS: I am new to using Linux please be patient with my ignorance.

Just installed 11.04 on a box that it is on a kvm switch. As long as the switch is connecting the monitor to the booting Ubuntu box, the resolution of the monitor is detected OK. However, if for some reason I am working on a different box and the KVM switch is routing K V and M inputs to the other box, then Ubuntu defaults to what seems a botched VGA setting (i.e. it chops off top and left sections of the display).While in this "VGA" mode if I log out and log in, it re-detects the resolution ok.Is there any way to force Ubuntu to use a specific resolution no matter what? In this way, if I am working on a different box while waiting for Ubuntu to load, when I switch the resolution will be OK.I tried the only thing I can think of and this is to set the "good" resolution as "default" for "all" monitors, but it has no effect.

1680*1050
1920*1080
My monitor supports up to 1440*900. When I selected one of the higher resolutions, it didn't look very sharp, and the text was somewhat fuzzy and lacked clarity. Was this rendering being done by the graphics card but 'compressed' by the monitor?
The status said 'switched to metamode'. I tried searching but found nothing - what exactly does MetaMode mean? I'm more interested in understanding what was happening, only experimenting with the higher resolutions. What monitor and resolution do you have?

- Ubuntu 10.04 (beta)Everything was working fine up until a few days ago.
But then... The first problem I noticed was that the Grub screen was flickering ("Auto adjust in progress" came up on the monitor). It wasn't enough to make selecting an option impossible, it's just never done that before. The big problem, though, came when I tried to boot up Ubuntu 9.10 (which I've had on my computer for ages). The Ubuntu logo comes up, but then nothing happens for about a minute, followed by the following error message:
Gave up waiting for root device - Missing modules (cat /pro/modules; ls /dev) LERT! /dev/disk/byuuid/4f743ef0-7a38-481e-613e-ceee3a70ba14 does not exist. Dropping to shell! The only thing I can do then is physically reboot the computer. This happens if I try either Recovery Mode or using the previous kernal as well. Both Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 (beta) continue to work without problem.
I simply ran the Guest Additions CD (on VirtualBox), double clicked the x86 (I'm running 32-bit) executable, and got that error.
