Ubuntu Installation :: How To Boot Into Low Graphics Mode
Sep 11, 2010Installed ubuntu successfully on the hard disk through live CD. My machine is a ASUS K40IN, with Graphics card GEForce G102M. Can't get ubuntu to run normally so I have to access through terminal in recovery mode. I need to install the drivers for the graphics card so I can run ubuntu in some form of gdm, otherwise I'm pretty much blind since I'm not too good with code.
/etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist, so I can't use the exploit to get me to low graphics mode.
If there's a command I can enter into grub to run me in low graphics mode, anyone? I'm keeping [URL] and [URL] threads in view, since it's very possible I'm running into the same problems. I have the nvidia driver loaded on my ntfs usb stick ready to transfer and install but I can't seem to mount it proper. FailsafeX graphics mode does not work. I get a blank black screen.

Jul 10, 2011After I upgraded to 11.04 I now can only boot in safe mode. When I boot up in regular mode everything on the desktop is showing but I cant open anything. When I try to boot up in the classic mode, which is what I prefer, I just get my wallpaper on my desktop but no icons or anything. I didn't mind the safe mode at first but I now realise I cant install any updates which isn't good. I have 222 updates that need installed.

Nov 18, 2010I attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

Jan 19, 2010After upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala, my Amilo Laptop (AMD64) refuses to boot. I installed GRUB2 which works fine for my WinXP ... and Karmic will boot in recovery mode.
When trying a normal boot, I get a black screen. CRTL-ALT-F1 yields just a blinking cursor. The system will immediately reboot when pressing CRTL-ALT-Entf.
When booting in recovery mode, I choose "Resume normal boot" from the menu, log in while in cosole mode and enter "startx" ... and the grafic environtment works fine!
Why does the system work in recovery mode, but does not start with a normal boot?

May 30, 2010how to enable boot in safe graphics mode in the bootable USB that I created for 10.04 by following the instructions in the download page.
Currently when I boot from USB and select installation, the monitor goes off. So I guess safe graphics mode is the way to go.

Aug 16, 2011I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my 3 TB hard drive but UEFI firmware can't boot that Linux partition anywhere and went Windows 7 instead. Does anyone have any solutions for UEFI booting? I think EFI filesystem is messed up or bug in installer. Earlier I was able install and boot linux partition with both linux distros (Ubuntu and Fedora) before I removed them for re-install them later and created additional NTFS partition until now.
However, I was only able boot Ubuntu 11.04 from USB stick in UEFI mode. I will continue to use live USB until all solutions are solved. UPDATE: I made a data backup on one of NTFS partitions and removed it. I tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 below 1 TB disk space but still can't boot it.
My system configuration is:

Intel i7-2600K processor
8 GB memory modules
Hitachi 3 TB hard drive

Feb 18, 2010I tried to boot from CD for demo mode (9.10) but my XP machine wouldn't do it. I opened CD from My Computer and a selection window opened. Choices were to reboot to demo, Install to Windows or Help with Boot. I selected Help with Boot and a boot program was downloaded and installed (I think to drive C: (XP)). When I restarted, a new boot window opened giving me a choice to boot to XP or Ubuntu (9.10) and I chose Ubuntu. Instead of opening for demo it went to full install and I aborted the procedure, went to add/remove programs and uninstalled Ubuntu. Now when I restart I still get the boot selection window, Any suggestions as how to remove the boot program? Can't find it.

But if I boot this USB flash drive in another computer I would like to do it in a fresh way, that is, without loading the configuration of my computer (saved in the casper-rw file). For example, in Puppy Linux this can be done easily, just putting pfix=ram in a boot option of syslinux.cfg and selecting this option when booting.
I think this is important because I think that otherwise the Ubuntu (at least in some cases) cannot open if used in a computer different to the one where casper-rw was configured. It happens to me that I cannot run Ubuntu with my pendrive when inserted in a different computer (I think the reason is what I've said).

Mar 14, 2010I have an old Dell Inspiron 8200 which I use for doing my CCNA study on. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and it the cairo dock, all was running great, a little sluggish at times but thaht was down to the integrated display adaptor, no problem. I then decided to try out Open Suse but didnt like it so reformatted the whole disk back to Ubuntu then my problems started.
After going through the installation, I found the computer would only boot in the live CD mode, no files were copied. I then reformatted back to Windows XP and try top set up a dual boot system but the same results!, no data on my hard drive from Ubuntu!!. I then installed a new hard drive and tried a new dual boot installation but with the same results, what is stopping the machine form installing Ubuntu

Jul 18, 2011I've got CentOS 6 installed and am wondering if it's necessary to have installation media in order to run 'linux rescue'. (I have to do some LVM resizing and would rather do it from rescue mode than in a running system.)
What I've read about booting into linux rescue is that it seems to be necessary to have installation media and boot into that. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do it some other way, like from the grub menu? But it doesn't seem to be possible to enter 'linux rescue' from the grub command line (which I got to by typing 'c' in grub menu screen) - typing 'linux rescue' at grub command line says 'command not found'.
Maybe there's another way to do this? Or some fancy way to have loaded a rescue image or something onto my disk so I don't need installation media. There's 2 reasons why I'd like to enter linux rescue without installation media, both because my computer is very old. 1) My computer can't boot from USB, and 2) My CD/DVD tray is very unstable and keeps popping out intermittently, so I'd need to hold the tray in place during the whole LVM process and it's a real pain, and I wouldn't want to risk data corruption if the process is interrupted by my CD/DVD tray popping out.
I'm hoping there's some way - it'd also be nice to know how to do this if some urgent situation arose where I needed to enter linux rescue mode but didn't have installation media handy and it'd take to long to retrieve or create new installation media.

Jun 3, 2010i want to install ubuntu 10.04 on my studio 15 with i5 processor (already having win7 home ) in dual boot mode. i tried to install , it installed , but after restarting from second time onwards blank screen is coming and boot options are not coming , ERROR : no module found and with some values i tried for 4 times but unsuccessful , i did below steps
-my hdd is 320 so i separated 200(for win 7) , 50 (for personal ) , 40 unallocated for linux
-inserted ubuntu 10.04 rc1 CD
- in fourth step when selecting disk , i selected manual option(3rd)
- and i selected 40GB unallocated and formatted to ext4 and selected as root and install
- after reboot in boot options i can see 4 options i selected win 7 and from win7 i restarted
- after that black screen coming , boot options are not coming

Jul 19, 2010I wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

Aug 28, 2010Trying to boot Ubuntu 10.04.1 live CD and I get nowhere because the screen just stays black, with a monitor OSD alert saying "Cannot display this mode."
Is there a consumer version of Ubuntu available for regular people to use? I searched on the fourms and any post about "cannot display this mode" advises users to edit configuration files, or go into command line mode... what is this, 1991?
What is the real solution to this? Or is Ubuntu not made for consumer users? What other options do I have besides Mandrake?
The Ubuntu screenshots looks swell, nice graphic design of the user interface, pretty, but they should make the installer/live CD actually work like any other OS in 2010 first tho'.

General :: Get Grub2 To Boot OS X With Graphics Mode Boot Option?
Apr 14, 2010I've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.

Jan 4, 2011Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
Ubuntu :: How To Boot Into CLI Mode
Mar 16, 2010I would like to know how do I get my Ubuntu 9.10 OS to boot into the command promp. Something along the lines of what you get when you hit CTRL+ALT+F1. What I have done so far is:
1. Made a "inittab" file and wrote in it :id:S:initdefault: (something like that, did not work).
2. "sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove" (did not work)
3. Write in the rc.local script "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" (this killed the system all together).
4. "sudo chmod a-x /etc/init.d/gdm" (did not work)
5. Write in the file ~/bashrc "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop 1>&2" (it takes me to the command promp after the gdm loads, and I open the gnome terminal).
6. I tried to edit the /etc/default file to add "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text" (did not work. The file does not exist).
7. Lastly I found online that you can stop GDM from starting up from the "services-admin" program. Only that program was taken out in 9.10.
Is there anyway to boot into the command line promp, without deleting the GDM? The only other way I found to boot into a select "Recovery Mode" from the Grub menu as a default boot. That, too, does not boot me into a command promp directly. It boots into that blue screen (no pun intended. hahahaha... Linux has a blue screen ) with the options.
