how to enable boot in safe graphics mode in the bootable USB that I created for 10.04 by following the instructions in the download page.
Currently when I boot from USB and select installation, the monitor goes off. So I guess safe graphics mode is the way to go.
Ubuntu 10.04 installation takes me to a blank (monitor away) screen. I have followed Google searches and forums and have tried all the nomodreset & radeon.setmode=1 stuff on command line and have failed. If you press F6 on the menu and play with the options you would see that half the options do not work even if you select them. Why even have "nonodreset" as an option when it does not do anything? Did the developers not once wonder that having installation that is not based on grapic driver (that is text based or safe mode based) would be the way to go. Go ahead and Google "Ubuntu installation blank screen" and you will see that this is a pretty massive problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm kind of new to Ubuntu. Anyways did a fresh install over windows, would crash with this pixilated purple screen. So I tried "safe graphics mode" and it worked. But now that it is installed, how do I get out of it and have it run normally?
Edit: tried to manually install the nvidia drivers, restarted comp and now it wont boot in. Stuck on a black screen and it says "gpu lockup - switching to software fbcon".
After I upgraded to 11.04 I now can only boot in safe mode. When I boot up in regular mode everything on the desktop is showing but I cant open anything. When I try to boot up in the classic mode, which is what I prefer, I just get my wallpaper on my desktop but no icons or anything. I didn't mind the safe mode at first but I now realise I cant install any updates which isn't good. I have 222 updates that need installed.

When I installed it it says it was not a trusted package and now that it's installed, I cant find it in Synaptic Package Manager nor Ubuntu Software Center. View 9 Replies View RelatedI made a backup of xorg.conf and added Xinerama and the other configuration items I needed. X failed to load. Then I copied my backup to xorg.conf and...X failed to load. Then I tried booting up in safe graphics made, and X failed to load. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but it did nothing. Literally nothing -- no error, no output, no nothing. Then I saw someone who had suggested to apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg, then reinstall it, and X failed to load.
I am at a complete loss. I have now read that the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is no longer used, that the os is supposed to autodetect everything now, but in that case I don't see how I will ever get dual monitors. In any case, I can live without dual monitors, but I need at least ONE monitor, and I have no idea how to get the configuration working.
how do I make grub boot to allow me to choose, like safe mode and normal mode and all that second, how do I do automated back ups (preferably using file copy) for something like every sunday at 11:00 am using the command line, i use to know but forgot.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?
View 5 Replies View RelatedInstalled ubuntu successfully on the hard disk through live CD. My machine is a ASUS K40IN, with Graphics card GEForce G102M. Can't get ubuntu to run normally so I have to access through terminal in recovery mode. I need to install the drivers for the graphics card so I can run ubuntu in some form of gdm, otherwise I'm pretty much blind since I'm not too good with code.
/etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist, so I can't use the exploit to get me to low graphics mode.
If there's a command I can enter into grub to run me in low graphics mode, anyone? I'm keeping [URL] and [URL] threads in view, since it's very possible I'm running into the same problems. I have the nvidia driver loaded on my ntfs usb stick ready to transfer and install but I can't seem to mount it proper. FailsafeX graphics mode does not work. I get a blank black screen.
I wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

I was trying to figure out how to get an external monitor as my primary monitor on my laptop when i made a change that cause the desktop environment to keep logging me out. I got it into safe mode and resolved the issue but i have my account set to not ask for a password on login and it keeps booting to safe mode now. I have tried logging out and typing my username to get the option to select the normal desktop but as soon as i enter my username it boots bake in as safe mode. The option to require a password on login is not working in this mode. Anyone know how I can get this corrected?

The windows boot loader has been replaced by GRUB so now i can's select safe mode with networking. The only other option i tired is to go to msconfig and change it to safe boot but theres no option for safe mode with networking.

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy friend asked me to look at their laptop as it was not booting up. I checked it and found that you could not even boot into safe mode. I have used a windows boot disk to try and sort any issues but this has not worked. The problem is he never made the recovery disks by the manufacturer so I cant reinstall windows. I can access all the files on the hard drive when running Ubuntu. So what I need to know is it possible to run the manufacturers program to make the recovery disks from Ubuntu.

Now I can only boot in safe mode since it requests activation. There is nothing important on the computer and I only want to use it for watching movies at this time. I want to get rid of Windows altogether, and install Ubuntu. I have downloaded a copy of it and its on my removable drive. I do not have a disc drive on the laptop, only USB. How do I do this? View 9 Replies View RelatedIn these days I install ubuntu 9.10 64bit on several notebook (Intel + AMD Switchable Graphics, NVIDIA Optimus Hybrid graphics), but the same problem is it can't boot ubuntu with graphic mode. I only can install it with text mode, and after installation, it still boot with text mode. I tried to execute startx, but failed to switch to graphics mode. I didn't see this issue with some notebooks with ATI/NVIDIA graphics, so I think this issue may relate with VBIOS VBE mode settings.
When I try to execute "startx" under the text mode, some error information appears as below.
(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
(EE) No devices detected.

I've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.
I had been using Ubuntu 10.04.1 in a Macbook pro (triple boot: Mac, Win7 and Ubuntu). Now I am not able to boot in to Ubuntu in graphics mode. It just freezes after the Ubuntu logo appears. It happened once before and I re-installed the OS. Now I have the same issue. I can boot in recovery mode and get into my account.
When I tried startx command I get the error below:
(there is more stuff splashed on the screen, but the above two are the only errors I see)
I thought of reinstalling the OS. But this may happen again and re-installing the OS every month wipes out all my configurations and files in my account.
I was looking around and trying to find how to startup ubuntu in low graphics mode with out having to go through the recovery startup. So I was wondering if it is possible to boot into low graphics mode every startup? The reason is my computer is really old and runs faster in low graphics. Another question is what do I loose in low graphics mode?
