View 1 Replies View RelatedI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

I've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything

I would like to know how do I get my Ubuntu 9.10 OS to boot into the command promp. Something along the lines of what you get when you hit CTRL+ALT+F1. What I have done so far is:
1. Made a "inittab" file and wrote in it :id:S:initdefault: (something like that, did not work).
2. "sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove" (did not work)
3. Write in the rc.local script "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" (this killed the system all together).
4. "sudo chmod a-x /etc/init.d/gdm" (did not work)
5. Write in the file ~/bashrc "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop 1>&2" (it takes me to the command promp after the gdm loads, and I open the gnome terminal).
6. I tried to edit the /etc/default file to add "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text" (did not work. The file does not exist).
7. Lastly I found online that you can stop GDM from starting up from the "services-admin" program. Only that program was taken out in 9.10.
Is there anyway to boot into the command line promp, without deleting the GDM? The only other way I found to boot into a select "Recovery Mode" from the Grub menu as a default boot. That, too, does not boot me into a command promp directly. It boots into that blue screen (no pun intended. hahahaha... Linux has a blue screen ) with the options.

I was trying to figure out how to get an external monitor as my primary monitor on my laptop when i made a change that cause the desktop environment to keep logging me out. I got it into safe mode and resolved the issue but i have my account set to not ask for a password on login and it keeps booting to safe mode now. I have tried logging out and typing my username to get the option to select the normal desktop but as soon as i enter my username it boots bake in as safe mode. The option to require a password on login is not working in this mode. Anyone know how I can get this corrected?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn these days I install ubuntu 9.10 64bit on several notebook (Intel + AMD Switchable Graphics, NVIDIA Optimus Hybrid graphics), but the same problem is it can't boot ubuntu with graphic mode. I only can install it with text mode, and after installation, it still boot with text mode. I tried to execute startx, but failed to switch to graphics mode. I didn't see this issue with some notebooks with ATI/NVIDIA graphics, so I think this issue may relate with VBIOS VBE mode settings.
When I try to execute "startx" under the text mode, some error information appears as below.

I have UBUNTU 11:04 and prefer the display given by " SAFE MODE" - is there a way that I can lock to ensure that Ubuntu always boots up in safe Mode.Save me having to remember to change the preferences every time I reboot. The screen shows the Ubuntu splash screen but then the login screen does not come on. I get a blank screen. Worst of all, I had removed Recovery entries from the grub so I can't boot into recovery mode so easily. It's urgent. I don't want to reinstall with my exams a week away.

I need to boot Ubuntu into a non-x, command line mode. So I can install an nvidia driver for my new GeForce GTX 260 (I had a GeForce 7900 running on my Ubuntu system using the synaptic open source 185 driver for nvidia, but there is no driver except the one I downloaded just now from nvidia's site for the GTX 260 card). That requires there be no X session running, not even in a separate domain so to speak. There is no rescue mode in Grub2. Recover mode in Grub still boots an X session (Gnome). Alt+F1 appears to be a clean command line terminal but even that does not work because the nvidia driver installer script sees through that ruse and knows there is an active Gnome session. I tried sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop and that did not work. I tried ctr+alt+backspace and that did nothing.
What can I do? I tell you some days linux is just too frustrating, about to just toss the baby with the bath water and go back to Winblows. Bought a new graphics card today, and here I am stuck not being able to even install the driver from a command line prompt, geesh.
My girlfriend accidentally removed the power from the computer and now i cant boot up. I just get Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode and than:
0 run ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session
0 reconfigure graphics
0 troubleshoot error
0 exit to console
0 restart x

Just installed ver 10.4 -64 bit desktop, I want to make some modifications to the environment -- want to boot in terminal mode and not desktop (for fun and giggles), but if I open up a terminal, enter su- and password, then edit the (I hope) appropriate file it comes back and says that I do not have permission.
Is it because I installed the desktop version, or because I don't know enough linux to shoot myself in the foot yet? Should I go back to square one and install the server version then configure it so that it starts up the desktop?
Installed ubuntu successfully on the hard disk through live CD. My machine is a ASUS K40IN, with Graphics card GEForce G102M. Can't get ubuntu to run normally so I have to access through terminal in recovery mode. I need to install the drivers for the graphics card so I can run ubuntu in some form of gdm, otherwise I'm pretty much blind since I'm not too good with code.
/etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist, so I can't use the exploit to get me to low graphics mode.
If there's a command I can enter into grub to run me in low graphics mode, anyone? I'm keeping [URL] and [URL] threads in view, since it's very possible I'm running into the same problems. I have the nvidia driver loaded on my ntfs usb stick ready to transfer and install but I can't seem to mount it proper. FailsafeX graphics mode does not work. I get a blank black screen.
I edited the /etc/default/grub file (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text" ) to make ubuntu boot into text mode directly, but now the problem is some LCD (1366x768 resolution)no display when boot into text mode. It may be relate with LCD EDID, the same ubuntu OS hard disk can boot into text mode with another LCD (1600x900 resolution).

I had been using Ubuntu 10.04.1 in a Macbook pro (triple boot: Mac, Win7 and Ubuntu). Now I am not able to boot in to Ubuntu in graphics mode. It just freezes after the Ubuntu logo appears. It happened once before and I re-installed the OS. Now I have the same issue. I can boot in recovery mode and get into my account.
When I tried startx command I get the error below:
(there is more stuff splashed on the screen, but the above two are the only errors I see)
I thought of reinstalling the OS. But this may happen again and re-installing the OS every month wipes out all my configurations and files in my account.

View 4 Replies View Relatedas Ubuntu is my only OS on this box.I had this PC running as a server for a few months with few reboots.I installed updates as usual yesterday, and hadn't changed anything configuration-wise since the last reboot. Well last night this server that I was running was moved to another Windows box and so I finally got to shut this PC down for the night. In the morning, I was greeted with an endless splash screen. It went on for 20 minutes without anything. I did update the kernel through update manager.
So what do I do? This machine has a 1TB HDD with a lot of very important data on it--reformatting is not a considerable option at this point. Which is bad because I don't know what else I could so when even recovery mode isn't working...
I was looking around and trying to find how to startup ubuntu in low graphics mode with out having to go through the recovery startup. So I was wondering if it is possible to boot into low graphics mode every startup? The reason is my computer is really old and runs faster in low graphics. Another question is what do I loose in low graphics mode?

When I try to boot up in the classic mode, which is what I prefer, I just get my wallpaper on my desktop but no icons or anything. I didn't mind the safe mode at first but I now realise I cant install any updates which isn't good. I have 222 updates that need installed.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala, my Amilo Laptop (AMD64) refuses to boot. I installed GRUB2 which works fine for my WinXP ... and Karmic will boot in recovery mode.
When trying a normal boot, I get a black screen. CRTL-ALT-F1 yields just a blinking cursor. The system will immediately reboot when pressing CRTL-ALT-Entf.
When booting in recovery mode, I choose "Resume normal boot" from the menu, log in while in cosole mode and enter "startx" ... and the grafic environtment works fine!
Why does the system work in recovery mode, but does not start with a normal boot?
