View 1 RepliesI upgraded from 10.10 netbook edition to 11.04 and something went wrong. After the grub menu I get the password window on that typical magenta screen with lights. Afterwards I get a message, that the netbook connected to the internet, but the Unity desktop doesnt show. Still the magenta desktop without anything. Already have tried to select the previous linux edition on the grub-menu, but no change.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI basically can't get my mic to work in F12. After several releases fighting with pulseaudio, F11 finally worked almost OBO, after going to system->preferences->advanced sound configuration and setting all the input volumes to the maximum. But now there's no advanced sound configuration tool, and I just can't find anything to make it work. Skype isn't working, nor is gnome-sound-recorder. I do record some static, but nothing more. By the way, I'm on an Acer Timeline 3810T.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
I've got Ubuntu 10.10 with the following kernel: 2.6.35-28-generic . Unity doesn't work for me! I've downloaded it and all required packages, but when I start a session with "Ubuntu netbook edition", I only get an empty desktop! No left panel, no upper panel, no icons... nothing at all! I've attached a text file with the output of the command 'unity' in a terminal

I started Libreoffice and clicked "Keep in launcher" which it does for that session it also has quick list, but none of the programs start! They work fine from applications menu but not from Unity.

I've just installed 11.04 but can't have unity since it doesn't support ATI Radeon HD 5600 series along other ATI cards. Anyone who knows when ubuntu is planning to solve this problem?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 10.10, and there were no apparent problems during install. However, Unity doesn't start when I use the Ubuntu session from GDM. I have guake terminal installed, which starts correctly, so if I open that and run unity as a background process, everything works perfectly. I would like a solution other than adding it to my startup apps, because I still use GNOME every now and then.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there a Sound Recorder like the Total Recorder for Windows? Someone told me to use Audacity, but Audacity recorded the mic input (e.g. the net radio sound through the speakers together with the noise of the room). Maybe I just cannot find the right settings.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI made the big mistake of installing the preview version of the new Unity desktop that will be part of 11.04.I now have a computer that runs like a dog and it is near impossible to do anything. I have tried to find anything on how to reverse back to the standard Gnome desktop, but all I can find is instructions on how to install it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen the live CD is booted up, there is a notice saying Ubuntu is sorry, as there is no 3D support in the laptop. If the Live CD doesn't see the video card etc, then there is a problem. The laptop has NVidia Geforce 310M, meaning it has the 3D support, only Ubuntu doesn't see it on live boot, so what the use of the Unity desktop? The Gnome starts up.
I have seen Gnome, but I'd like to see Unity. How can I do it? I can of course download the NVidia driver. But to activate the driver, I have to restart the laptop, then the Live session would go away. By the way, if Linux to be everybody's OS, I think the "restricted" drivers should be included, as they are allowed by the owners to be downloaded!
After installing 11.04 and trying out the new Unity desktop, I can't put any applications on my desktop. I get the following error message. code...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. I can get to the option screen where I choose to either install or try without installing. When I choose either of these, my monitor shuts off, saying there is no signal. I've tried with a downloaded copy and an official disc from Canonical. Both end in the same result. So I went in to the 'other options' and checked the nomodeset, and then booted in. It worked and I was able to install. Install finished, I restarted, tried booting into the freshly install OS, and the monitor shuts off, again.
I can use all Ubuntu's up through 9.10, which works wonderfully. I suppose I could just stick with 9.10, but eventually it will be unsupported, right? I thought maybe my pc is just too old, but I run Windows 7 on a second hard drive and it works great.
I've even tried an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. I get the same issue. So I'm at a loss. I do wonder if it's my video card, but that doesn't make sense.
Pc info:
Motherboard: Asus
Processor: AMD FX-60 2.6 (939 socket)
Video Card: EVGA GT 240
I've had 10.04 installed with an HP/Asus motherboard of same socket(939). I had an Nvidia 7300GT video card installed.
I have installed 11.4 with almost no problems. I cannot seem to get Unity to work. error states that I don't have the proper hardware? I have a new Toshiba Satellite laptop. I downloaded and installed the 11.4 x64 desktop version. should the laptop and the desktop be same? or is there a laptop version?

For instance, if I start recording while a video is playing in totem I would like to record video sound too. Otherwise if I'm recording some action with windows or programs I would like to record warning/error sound too.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

I remember I tried to boot Ubuntu Netbook Edition LiveCD once, but I had a problem with 3D graphics, and a result I couldn't see the menu panels, etc. So, I was wondering, will the same thing happen with Natty, since they are both Unity? Or will they improve support for graphics in 11.04?

I need a screen recorder - but today I did. Being a quite recent Fodora convert I had a quick squint about the forums and found nothing but problems with the more well known desktop recorders or commandline ffmeg / mencoder solutions.A name that did crop up a few times is KAZAM - an Ubuntu Launchpad project... hmmm I thinks - shouldn't be too hard to get up on F15 being a python script... this Fedora solution is based on the Debian howto found here: [URL] And here it is:
1) You will need a few tools and dependencies 1st:
Code:
sudo yum install bzr intltool python-keybinder gnome-python-rsvg python-xlib python-distutils-extra python-pycurl x264-libs
2) Grab the code branch from launchpad by bzr:
Code:
sudo bzr branch lp:kazam
3) change into Kazam folder and install:
Code:
cd kazam
sudo python setup.py install
4) Job done!
You'll now have an Applications -> Sound & Video -> Kazam Screencaster shortcut in your menu Once you have started a recording (with audio if you like and have pulse setup) you can pause / stop from the bottom panel applet and can then save the MKV to disk for or open further editing. The "Edit with" option does not seem to be working yet - at least not on my machine but that is no major hardship
My desktop is a Compaq CQ5110F. It's a dual boot system and Fedora 11 resides on sda3 of hard disk (WD 3200AAJS-6).Both suspend and hibernate don't work, but the symptoms are different. For hibernate, after resume, there are some messages (??) about register errors quickly flashed on the screen, then the logon window shows but the system hangs. For suspend, I cannot wake up the system by hitting some keys on the keyboard. After I press the power button, LCD doesn't get any signal. I remember hibernate worked when I was using Fedora10, but wireless card did not automatically reconnect at that time. Also hibernate works fine for vista.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently moved from Ubuntu Desktop to Ubuntu Server. I have a Dell D600 acting as a three prong firewall. I use a Netgear FA120 USB NIC for the third prong. After converting to Server, the NIC detects as Eth1. I'm able to configure an IP, but the NIC never sends or receives packets. The same NIC works great in Ubuntu Desktop. Dmesg never shows the NIC being ready.
