I have my Unity desktop just how I like it, but sometimes I like to log in to the Gnome (Ubuntu Classic) desktop. However, I was playing around with CCSM while in Gnome and I've totally messed it up, I have the Gnome panels and also the Unity launcher, it's a total mess. Is there a way to reset my Gnome desktop to default without affecting my Unity desktop?

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

1. I have messed up KDE desktop on SUSE 11.2. I have installed Gnome and XFce desktops. I can happily work in Xfce (best on my old machine) or Gnome.

In my KUBUNTU 9.04 every time i set my desktop(wallpaper) it is reset to default after restart.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI created a separate /home partition to share between F10 and F11. And, of course, the gnome settings conflict. I really don't need to go back to F10 and when I install F12 over it I will omit including the separate /home directory during the install set up and that will force F12 to create the /home Dir on the same file system. So, to clear up gnome settings for now, is the only way mean deleting the .gconf, .gnome* directories? This was recommended in another post back a few years ago.

View 3 Replies View RelatedRight now I am running 11.04, 10.04, 10.10. and I am using Unity, Gnome 2.32, and Xfce DE. Since 11.04 came out I have tried it with Unity, Gnome 3, Gnome 2.32 and Now Xfce. I have two internal hard drives and one USB hard drive that I use for testing. The two internal hd are running 10.10 and gnome 2.32 and the other running 11.04 and Unity. The USB hd now has 11.04 and Xfce.
After trying 11.04 with Unity and 11.04 with Gnome 3, I find them both designed wrong. They are very clumsy to use. (To many mouse movements and clicks) To many things need to be open and to many things to search for. I spend more time trying to do simple things that use to take me seconds to do in gnome 2.32.
Now that Gnome 3 is out, I believe gnome 2.32 is going away so I am looking for other avenues to go in. I have tried fedora and suse, but don't like the RPM's and there package manager. A few years ago I tried Xfce but liked gnome better.
This morning I decided to install it on a USB drive and give it a test drive. I find I really like it because I do things in seconds again. Things are easy to find and there is some things that are a lot like gnome 2.32. And one of the biggest things I like is it is so customisable. Also it boots very fast even from a USB drive. I believe I will be going to it as my main DE. I always liked Ubutnu and have use it since 2005 so I am glad I can stay with it even though I do not like or plan to use Unity or Gnome 3 in the future. This doesn't mean I will not change my mind, but as of now I do not like either one. Let see what will happen with the 11.10 release. Here are a few screen shots of 11.04 and Xfce.
Running Ubuntu 11.04 and installed Gnome3 upgrade. Messed things up big time. Ubuntu will load, but will shut down when I try to access almost anything but terminal. How can I remove Gnome 3 or try to get back to Unity desktop or whatever.

I here that 11.04 will be shipping with the Unity desktop by default. However, I prefer Gnome. I've seen the recent KDE and Unity interfaces and I don't like them. Right now I'm using Gnome under Ubuntu 10.10. Will there be a Ubuntu 11.04 with the Gnome desktop, which I think will be version 3? If there won't be, will I have to switch to another distro? I quite like Ubuntu.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get multiple monitors going on my laptop (thru the HDMI port) and did fairly well, but the ribbon/panel/whatever (at the bottom of the screen with launcher, etc.) is now gone and I can't find it (even with zoom-out). At first it was only gone when I disconnected the external monitor, but was present when both monitors were attached. Now it's always gone. Is there a magic reset-the-desktop to default (without reinstall) command?

Today I installed Xubuntu desktop on my normal Ubuntu, to see what it's like, and to have the option to run a more minimal desktop when I want.
My only problem is that my login screen loads with the Xubuntu theme. This wouldn't be a problem except it makes it take significantly longer to boot into Ubuntu (Gnome).
How can I change it back so that Gnome is the default, and XFCE only gets loaded if I pick it at login?
what are my options with customizing Gnome at the login screen?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded now from 10.04 to 10.10 to now 11.04, and I believe I have so much cruft in my system that it's become unstable.I thought I could selectively rename certain folders in my root (such as .gnome, .gnome2, etc, while logged of (i.e. from a ctrl-alt-f1 console), but that really didn't seem to work.I'd prefer not to copy to external hard drive and re-install fresh. However, I'm using KDE now for stability, as neither gnome nor unity will run well.

I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.
I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?

All gone.Recovery loads fine but with the 10.XX version look.What happened and how do I undo it?
