Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From Meerkat RC LiveCD Hangs?

Oct 3, 2010

Process and problem description:

1. downloaded ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso and burned to CD.

2. re-booted.

3. "ubuntu" is displayed center screen with five dots below text (sequencing white and red).

4. screen jumps to alternating horizontal bars (green & purple plus green & pink sections) about 1/4 inch high.

5. cd activity light stops blinking.

6. no standard desktop ever appears.

System:

- Asus A8N-VM CSM with integrated nVidia C51PV [GeForce 6150] display
- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 3200+ CPU
- 2.5GB DDR 333 MHz memory

Has anyone else run across this? Obviously, trying to convince a friend to switch to ubuntu using this CD would not be good.

Ubuntu Installation :: Meerkat LiveCD PowerMgt?

Nov 1, 2010

I'm trying to install 10.10 (x64) using live CD but after about 20 mins of operation my computer goes into sleep mode, even if I am actively using the sessions (e.g. web surfing etc)and won't wake up. The hard drive keeps working but the monitor is in power save mode and can't be woken up. This is most problematic when trying to do an install, as the the sleep mode kicks in even mid-install. So far I tried the following:

1. turned off all power management in gnome
2. used acpi=off at boot
3. switched from S1 to S3 and back again
4. uninstalled all power management packages
5. configued power management in gnome to not go to sleep

No luck, and no change in behaviour.

My hardware is as follows:

GPU: 9800GTX+
CPU: Q9550
MB: GA-X48-DQ6 (gigabyte)
MEM: 8GB (4x2GB DDR2)

When the system kicks into sleep mode, the GPU fan goes to full as well. So I assumed that there may be a graphics driver issue, but not sure how to update drivers whilst using a live CD. I'm aware I can use text based install or the alternative install CD however, without going into too much detail these will not suffice for what I need to do. Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I did do a search but I may not have been using the right search words. I'm keen to get 10.10 up and running, grateful for any assistance from you unbuntu gurus out there.

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hangs On Checking Battery State

So much for an LTS release being stable. I try to boot from a LiveCD and it hangs on "Checking battery state..." I searched the forum for a solution but didn't really find anything. This is an old desktop machine with Intel onboard graphics -- nothing too fancy and nothing it should have a problem with. Yet it's not working.

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hangs On Text Mode With Some Info

Jan 8, 2011

I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.

For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade And LiveCD Hangs On Sandy Bridge

Apr 29, 2011

I have an i5 sandy bridge PC with a gigabyte H67M mobo. I have been running maverick amd64 till yesterday. On maverick graphic acceleration didn't work so I decided to upgrade. After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?

Ubuntu Installation :: System Not Booting Up With USB LiveCD / Vista Installer

Apr 11, 2010

I have a Dell Studio laptop, which I am trying to make dual boot and in big trouble. These are the steps I completed.

1. Backedup all my important data on a USB drive.
2. Prepared a Ubuntu LiveUSB and booted in Ubuntu.
3. Used GParted tool to repartition my hard drive (320GB) as follows,

Partition 1 NTFS (Primary) ~50GB
Partition 2 NTFS (Primary) ~100GB
Partition 3 EXT4 (Extended)
Root EXT4 (Logical) ~20GB
Swap Linux-swap ~2GB
Home EXT4 (Logical) ~129GB

4. Accepted all these changes in GParted and restarted the machine.
5. Used VISTA installation disk to start VISTA installation on 1st NTFS partition (Partition 1).

-Everything was fine until now -

6. The VISTA installer took a really long time (around half hour) just showing copying files with 0% completion status message.
7. Somehow I got impatient and tried to cancel the installation.

Now, the problem is the system does not boot up even with my USB LiveCD or Windows VISTA installer. It just shows blank screen and nothing appears.

Fedora Installation :: After Booting From The DVD PC Hangs?

" - to install or upgrade in graphical mode, press the <ENTER> key - use the function key listed below for more information [F1-Main] [F2-Options] [F3-General] [F4-Kernel] [F5-Rescue]"

when I press "Enter" nothing happens, even the function keys does not work & after some time PC restarts. The DVD is ok I have checked it in my friends PC, it works on his PC very well. My PC configuration is:

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 Hangs - System Not Booting

Nov 22, 2010

Just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. upgraded from update manager. System would not boot. Booted live cd and used the 9.10 menu.lst. Now boots but takes a long time. I don't know much about the kernel. I assume they are listed in the /boot directory and are called by menu.lst (dual boot w/ XP) (btw: I am ready to get rid of XP once I get this fixed). 9.10 appears to use 2.6.31-20-generic, therefore, I assume 10.04 uses 2.6.32-25-generic.

Ubuntu :: LiveCD - Can't Get Past Login & Password - Puter Just Hangs

May 23, 2011

I'm in LiveCD (Natty) I blew up the OS. Can't get past login & password. 'Puter just hangs there. I'm going to do a clean install, but want to make a copy of my /home. I tried gksudo nautilus to copy all of /home to an external hard drive (via USB). It won't copy all, saying that I lack permissions. I've read about recursively copying, etc. and cannot make out the sequence I need. I must copy all that is in my /home and preserve all the links, dependencies, file and directory ownership permissions and also must get the command for copying them from the external hard drive if the clean install goes bad.

Ubuntu :: Boot From HDD - Booting From LiveCD?

Jan 20, 2011

for the past couple of weeks, I have been booting from an Ubuntu LiveCD. Here's why: When I boot my computer (emachines E528 laptop), it gets to the BIOS loading screen (the one where you have the option to press a function key to get to the BIOS settings), then it goes to a black screen and looks like it is going to load GRUB, but instead of loading GRUB, the computer reboots. It does this endlessly, unless I insert a LiveCD. So, it's not the BIOS. That's good. When the Mint GUI (Linux Mint was the LiveCD I was originally using as I just happened to have it on hand) loaded for the first time, I checked all of the hard drive partitions and they all seemed to load fine. So, it's not a mechanical problem with the HDD. That's good.

At this point, I figured the MBR had become corrupted somehow. Now I wasn't really sure exactly where the MBR was, or how it all worked, but I was pretty sure that if I just reinstalled GRUB, everything would be hunky dorey. Unfortunately, I hit a road block when trying to install GRUB. That's not good. I am trying to follow the instructions in this thread, but I get the following error:

Code: grub> find /boot/grub/stage1

Error 15: File not found So then I tried following the instructions here, but I don't know how to tell which drive is sda1, sda2, etc. I'm guessing there's some terminal command to figure it out, but I don't know it and Google was less than helpful. I feel like something that basic should be easy to find, but I digress.

At this point, I am getting very close to backing up everything and reinstalling everything. Only problem with that is that I am not sure how to access the files on my Ubuntu partition as they are encrypted (I wrote down the key when I started it up, I just don't know how to bring up a prompt that will let me enter the key). I really don't want to reinstall and set everything back up, but if I have to I will.

So, I guess I just need to know how to tell which partition is associated with which sda#, or how to access the files in my encrypted Ubuntu home folder, or (hopefully) someone who can tell exactly what's going on from why I have posted and can give me instructions for fixing my problem. Also, here's a breakdown of how my hard drive is partitioned. Not sure why, but I thought this might be helpful: linky.

TLDR: How do I tell which partition is associated to which sda#? How do I open my encrypted home folder from my Ubuntu partition? After reading my whole post, is there any further insight you could offer that I may have overlooked?

Ubuntu :: Getting Kernel Panics While Booting From LiveCD / USB

Feb 17, 2011

I just built a computer with these specs:
Asus P7P55D-E Pro Mother Board
2 x 4gb GSkill RipJaw 1333
Intel Core i5-760 cpu
MSI nVidia GeFore GTX-460 Video Card

When I try to boot from a live CD/USB I always get some sort of kernel panic, most times about USB controllers and other times about cpu_idle. I have pictures of these that I can post but nothing from any logs because this is happening even before I install. I have left memtest running over night for 11 hours and had no problems, I have tried to boot with only one stick of memory, I have changed the video card to a GeForce 8800 and I have tried everything on a different motherboard and still no luck. Would I wrong to say that there is a problem with the CPU and should I return it? My only problem with all of this is that Windows installs perfectly fine on the computer with zero problems...weird.

When booting, it does the automatic boot but then crashes, with "Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 354800 (and more)". I am having the same problem with making a boot-able USB. I am not exactly sure what is wrong, I see two folders on the cd LiveOS and isolinux. I'm not sure if it is suppose to be like this, if the burning process when ok. I'm trying to set up a desktop on a pc (with AMD Sempron processor). This is very strange, I ruled out that it couldn't have been my computer (because my Fedora boot disk booted fine), my cd (because it is new and an entirely different brand), or the .iso (because I tested it in VirtualBox, which it booted perfectly).

Files in LiveOS folder:

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting The LiveCD From An USB Stick?

Jan 26, 2011

-I could use a hand in installing opensuse on my 2009 Intel Macbook

-I need to use a USB stick for the install, my optical drive doesn't work.

-I am trying to reformat my macbook to run 64-bit opensuse 11.3 instead of Apple's proprietary operating system, OS X

-So I started here: Chapter1.Installation with YaST

-And in this article, under section 1.1. Choosing the Installation Media, i found this sub-section: Booting the LiveCD from an USB Stick.

-So i followed those steps to create a bootable USB stick in Terminal, and i got an error in Terminal and was unable to go any further;

-this was the error in Terminal: dd: bs: illegal numeric value

Would anyone know what the error means, and what i should have typed instead? Is it because my USB stick is generic instead of being a specific type like a U3 stick?

Software :: Livecd-tools Created Usb Flash Disk Not Booting

Nov 4, 2010

My DVD drive has gone bad and with new Fedora 14 just launched I decided to install the same through the usb flash disk.

First I used dd: dd if=/home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb

It went on nicely and copied the iso nicely. But I could not boot with it.

Second time I tried livecd-tools: livecd-iso-to-disk /home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso /dev/sdb1

It went on nicely, and finally declared something like - usb disk is not live .... But here again when I tried to boot it says MISSING OS. I checked the contents of the flash disk. It contained raw DVD iso image, one images directory, one syslinux directory. I checked the contents of the images directory, and I found it had the install.img. And yes, the /dev/sdb1 is bootable.

Ubuntu :: Booting Hangs At Grub Menu?

Jan 19, 2010

not related to this thread [URL]

On a few VMs. Sometimes, when powering them on I get the GNU GRUB menu...

Code:
GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
etc

But there is no countdown for a default boot. It just hangs here. Indefinitely. Until I make a choice by pressing the enter key with "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" highlighted (default). I don't know if this is because the VM may not have been shutdown properly or what the case is, but this is unacceptable as I need these systems to continue to boot and get back on line regardless of the reason they were powered off.
