I have a NVIDIA Geforce 6150 LE video card and it is on the motherboard. I vaguely remember something on some site about nvidia cards, but can't remember what. It gets to the part where it says something like "Boot Ubuntu from the CD." I hit enter and it shuts my monitor off.
View 9 RepliesAbout two months ago my Ubuntu desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) started giving me trouble. The monitor would occasionally shut off after booting up and logging in and using it for a few minutes. Then this started happening every single time I booted up the machine, making it effectively useless. I decided to try a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, and, luckily for whatever reason I was able to get the monitor to *not* shut off long enough to get this new installation to actually install. But now, after installing 10.10 the computer is doing the same thing, shutting the monitor off after boot up and/or login. Sometimes I can get to the login screen, sometimes I can even actually log in, but even after I log in, the monitor shuts off after a few minutes. I can access the BIOS just fine, of course, and I can get to the GRUB menu just fine by pressing ESC on boot up, but I cannot even get the root access on recovery mode to work for more than a few seconds before the monitor just shuts off - usually it shuts off right before I can even arrow down to select root access from the menu when I boot to recovery mode. In terms of hardware, I tried installing a new power supply, but that hasn't worked.
I also tried changing the GRUB command for the boot, where you go to the GRUB editor and add nomodeset, i915.modeset=1, i915.modeset=0 or xforcevesa after splash quiet, but that also doesn't work. The video/graphics card is just the built-in Intel video (PCI-E or something like that, part of the motherboard basically). It's an MSI motherbaord from a couple of years ago, American Megatrends, but the BIOS appears up-to-date. Anyway, I've tried everything and I am just about to give up. Ubuntu had been working fine for me for a couple of years on this machine, with no hardware changes, right up until that first week of November, 2010. Could there have been some automatic software update that ruined my machine? The OS is Ubuntu 10.10, and the Linux kernel is 2.6.35-22-generic. Also, if it matters, this same machine has had that hda-spurious response warning thing that appears on boot sometimes because of the Intel built-in audio configuration. That's been happening since a few versions of Ubuntu ago, so I don't know if it is related.

I am new to linux so this has been a learning experience so far. I finally got the grub installed correctly for the external hard drive to boot up into Debian. I installed the minimal network install so I should just be going to a console prompt. After booting it it goes for a short time and then the screen shuts off, not just black. I tried ctrl-alt-f1/f2 which didn't do anything. I am able to reboot by ctrl-alt-del though. If I try to boot into the second option it goes further before shutting off. Using a live cd it does the same thing unless I choose the fail-safe option. When I choose that it boots up correctly. If I hook up an external monitor it will switch over to it when the screen shuts off, so I know it's not the video card

1. downloaded ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso and burned to CD.
2. re-booted.
3. "ubuntu" is displayed center screen with five dots below text (sequencing white and red).
4. screen jumps to alternating horizontal bars (green & purple plus green & pink sections) about 1/4 inch high.
5. cd activity light stops blinking.
6. no standard desktop ever appears.
System:
- Asus A8N-VM CSM with integrated nVidia C51PV [GeForce 6150] display
- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 3200+ CPU
- 2.5GB DDR 333 MHz memory
Has anyone else run across this? Obviously, trying to convince a friend to switch to ubuntu using this CD would not be good.
I have a Dell Studio laptop, which I am trying to make dual boot and in big trouble. These are the steps I completed.
1. Backedup all my important data on a USB drive.
2. Prepared a Ubuntu LiveUSB and booted in Ubuntu.
3. Used GParted tool to repartition my hard drive (320GB) as follows,
Partition 1 NTFS (Primary) ~50GB
Partition 2 NTFS (Primary) ~100GB
Partition 3 EXT4 (Extended)
Root EXT4 (Logical) ~20GB
Swap Linux-swap ~2GB
Home EXT4 (Logical) ~129GB
4. Accepted all these changes in GParted and restarted the machine.
5. Used VISTA installation disk to start VISTA installation on 1st NTFS partition (Partition 1).
-Everything was fine until now -
6. The VISTA installer took a really long time (around half hour) just showing copying files with 0% completion status message.
7. Somehow I got impatient and tried to cancel the installation.
Now, the problem is the system does not boot up even with my USB LiveCD or Windows VISTA installer. It just shows blank screen and nothing appears.
I've been using Ubuntu for about one year. Recently upgraded to 10.04. The PC tries to boot, comes to the "Booting from device hd..." screen and then shuts down. It shuts down or halts but doesn't power off. The CPU is still powered. This happens for about 2 in 4 boots. The recovery mode runs just fine. It says no damaged partitions. Only the 'booting from device' is the problem point.

First, I got the CD, inserted it, and it seemed to boot fine to this orange screen, with a texture, and at the bottom what seemed to be a video roll and a man with his arms open. Right after that my system's monitor seemed to shut down, completely, and I was unable to turn it back on. I restarted my computer and went through the same process until I took out the CD. So then I tried installing it into Windows, but that didn't work either. It had the Ubuntu boot option, and I selected it where I was shown The installation is completing

With a counter, and when it went to 0 my screen shut down and my computer went into a weird half-off state.
I know that this is a know issue with nvidia cards and that is (of course) what I have. I have tried many of the fixes that I found on these forums. Some of them seemed to work but the problem has still remained (maybe its because i'm still too new)
I have been tempted to go back to windows but I cannot let this problem drive me away from ubuntu
UPDATE2: As of 2 weeks ago, it won't boot at all. UPDATE1: HDD booted OK, but I don't know how to copy the GRUB file. Could this be a hardware temperature problem? I have just replaced a Hard Drive, & had to reinstall XP & 10.04.2LTS from scratch, (it was a TOTAL failure) The system now will not boot into XP, or either of the 2 Linux kernels or the recovery modes, without several attempts. ( I'm using a LiveCD now.)
POST is good. GRUB loads, but when I select an OS, it powers off. Windows shows the splash for a few seconds, then shuts down. Yesterday, I was able to boot into Linux after booting into Windows, but today Windows won't boot either. On examining the GRUB menu (e) the first line in the Linux records is 'recordfail' I will attempt to boot from HDD now, & post the GRUB output here. EDIT: If I run MEMTEST first, up to Test6, it boots normally.

My gateway laptop shuts down either imediately after booting, or while I'm online, usually within the first 5 minutes. I have a laptop cooler and aima fan at the laptop while using it. Could it be the hard drive? Is there any way of knowing before I buy a new hard drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

i can't install ubuntu because after booting from cd. the screen just shows a violet with a man and a keyboard logo on the lower mid and after that the monitor goes off.

View 7 Replies View Relatedfor the past couple of weeks, I have been booting from an Ubuntu LiveCD. Here's why: When I boot my computer (emachines E528 laptop), it gets to the BIOS loading screen (the one where you have the option to press a function key to get to the BIOS settings), then it goes to a black screen and looks like it is going to load GRUB, but instead of loading GRUB, the computer reboots. It does this endlessly, unless I insert a LiveCD. So, it's not the BIOS. That's good. When the Mint GUI (Linux Mint was the LiveCD I was originally using as I just happened to have it on hand) loaded for the first time, I checked all of the hard drive partitions and they all seemed to load fine. So, it's not a mechanical problem with the HDD. That's good.
At this point, I figured the MBR had become corrupted somehow. Now I wasn't really sure exactly where the MBR was, or how it all worked, but I was pretty sure that if I just reinstalled GRUB, everything would be hunky dorey. Unfortunately, I hit a road block when trying to install GRUB. That's not good. I am trying to follow the instructions in this thread, but I get the following error:
Code: grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
Error 15: File not found So then I tried following the instructions here, but I don't know how to tell which drive is sda1, sda2, etc. I'm guessing there's some terminal command to figure it out, but I don't know it and Google was less than helpful. I feel like something that basic should be easy to find, but I digress.
At this point, I am getting very close to backing up everything and reinstalling everything. Only problem with that is that I am not sure how to access the files on my Ubuntu partition as they are encrypted (I wrote down the key when I started it up, I just don't know how to bring up a prompt that will let me enter the key). I really don't want to reinstall and set everything back up, but if I have to I will.
So, I guess I just need to know how to tell which partition is associated with which sda#, or how to access the files in my encrypted Ubuntu home folder, or (hopefully) someone who can tell exactly what's going on from why I have posted and can give me instructions for fixing my problem. Also, here's a breakdown of how my hard drive is partitioned. Not sure why, but I thought this might be helpful: linky.

Is it possible to make a personalized version of ubuntu livecd that autostart ssh after booting? I need to test if video card failure cause my computer to freeze.If that's too complicated or not possible, is there any other livecd that does that?

When I try to boot from a live CD/USB I always get some sort of kernel panic, most times about USB controllers and other times about cpu_idle. I have pictures of these that I can post but nothing from any logs because this is happening even before I install. I have left memtest running over night for 11 hours and had no problems, I have tried to boot with only one stick of memory, I have changed the video card to a GeForce 8800 and I have tried everything on a different motherboard and still no luck. Would I wrong to say that there is a problem with the CPU and should I return it? My only problem with all of this is that Windows installs perfectly fine on the computer with zero problems...weird.
I have a system without a cd reader so i dd'd the livecd iso (I'm stuck with 7.10) to a partition. I can boot the system with grub4dos by loading the kernel and ramdisk. Is there a kernel parameter I can append so I can change the keymap like I was able to by pressing F3 in the cd boot menu?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the CentOS-5.6-i386-LiveCD.iso and burn it on a CD, as usual. When booting, it does the automatic boot but then crashes, with "Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 354800 (and more)". I am having the same problem with making a boot-able USB. I am not exactly sure what is wrong, I see two folders on the cd LiveOS and isolinux. I'm not sure if it is suppose to be like this, if the burning process when ok. I'm trying to set up a desktop on a pc (with AMD Sempron processor). This is very strange, I ruled out that it couldn't have been my computer (because my Fedora boot disk booted fine), my cd (because it is new and an entirely different brand), or the .iso (because I tested it in VirtualBox, which it booted perfectly).

I have been trying to create a live CD or DVD with kiwi, and following the instructions from Portal:KIWI - openSUSE All went well with the building and creation of the ISO image, but when I try to boot it I get:
Failed to mount ext3 clic container Failed to mount root filesystem if I press Alt-F3 (suggested in the terminal)the top most error is tune2fs: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /read-only/fsdata.ext3 Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock. Something I did find was that it may not have permission to use tune2fs.I haven't done any fiddling with the template supplied with kiwi.
Coming from Windows. First installed Fedora 11 but lost network and haven't been able to restore network connectivity. Attempted to re-install but during the boot process it complained about creating a soft link to /dev/root (not sure what this is about). So attempted to install CentOS by booting from the LiveCD. Much nicer interface but have no install icon and there doesn't appear to be installation guide. How I can install CentOS?

I have tried both the 64bit and 32bit downloads

I have checksum checked both images after download. I have attempted the install on CD and USB stick with both images and the result is always the same.

My DVD drive has gone bad and with new Fedora 14 just launched I decided to install the same through the usb flash disk.
First I used dd: dd if=/home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb
It went on nicely and copied the iso nicely. But I could not boot with it.
Second time I tried livecd-tools: livecd-iso-to-disk /home/prabhat/Download/Fedora-14-i386.iso /dev/sdb1
It went on nicely, and finally declared something like - usb disk is not live .... But here again when I tried to boot it says MISSING OS. I checked the contents of the flash disk. It contained raw DVD iso image, one images directory, one syslinux directory. I checked the contents of the images directory, and I found it had the install.img. And yes, the /dev/sdb1 is bootable.
I've only recently switched to Ubuntu and overall I'm loving it. When i first installed it shut down perfectly from the GUI. After updating from the Update Manager, I've had problems. Now it shuts down but my PC doesn't power down.
I can manually make it shut and power down from the terminal with the command:
sudo shutdown -h -P now
or:
sudo poweroff
The fact that it works from the Terminal but not from the GUI suggests there might be a coding problem with the GUI but discovering and fixing that is way beyond my capabilties.
Trying to install Natty 11.04 via PXE. The ethernet is a Realtek RTL8168d/8111d gigabit. It DHCPs and configures just fine. Then it downloads what it needs for partitioning and does that. After partitioning, it runs net/hw-detect.hotplug which discovers the interface as new, then strips it of any configuration so it can not proceed further. Is there any way to disable this secondary hotplug detection of the ethernet interface?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a multi-distro LiveCD that I am trying to run and/or install on my desktop computer. I have attempted to run/install Fedora 12, openSuse 11.2 , and Mandriva ONE 2010.0. Whether running LiveCD or installing, just after it shows the bar "Loading Kernel...", the monitor goes blank and the "Out of Range" message appears. I have adjusted the resolution to every setting listed (from 800x600 all the way to 1600x1200) with no change in the outcome.
I have an MSI KA780G motherboard with ATI Radeon HD3200 integrated graphics, and a Westinghouse L2610NW 26" LCD monitor with a 1920x1200 native resolution. Can anyone give me my first step that I should try to make this work? I have seen other threads mentioning this error, but they reference the error after installation, and I can't even get that far!
I have downloaded the latest version of Debian for PPC to run on my iMac G3 600MHz 1GB ram. The problem is, is when it is partitioning the HD the computer just shuts down and restarts from the beginning. I don't understand this. I chose it to erase and use the entire disk. The HD is 80GB. I really want to install this OS!
