Debian Multimedia :: How To Start Cupsd On Boot

Jul 26, 2010

I have installed ubuntu 10.04 lts -- I was wondering why it didn't start cupsd or something on boot?

I have installed the same ubuntu on another unit (same specs) with no problem on printing.... but this one (I'm swearing a lot now!) because it doesn't work... Been at this for 3 days in a span of one month -- and I started to think that this computer is hard headed GR!!

I'd like to bash it -- sorry but I'm really really annoyed -- to put it softly.

I'd like to know why it's not working as smoothly --

Currently I need to $sudo cupsd to make printing work every time I power on this computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From Meerkat RC LiveCD Hangs?

Oct 3, 2010

Process and problem description:

1. downloaded ubuntu-10.10-rc-desktop-amd64.iso and burned to CD.

2. re-booted.

3. "ubuntu" is displayed center screen with five dots below text (sequencing white and red).

4. screen jumps to alternating horizontal bars (green & purple plus green & pink sections) about 1/4 inch high.

5. cd activity light stops blinking.

6. no standard desktop ever appears.

System:

- Asus A8N-VM CSM with integrated nVidia C51PV [GeForce 6150] display
- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 3200+ CPU
- 2.5GB DDR 333 MHz memory

Has anyone else run across this? Obviously, trying to convince a friend to switch to ubuntu using this CD would not be good.

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hangs On Checking Battery State

So much for an LTS release being stable. I try to boot from a LiveCD and it hangs on "Checking battery state..." I searched the forum for a solution but didn't really find anything. This is an old desktop machine with Intel onboard graphics -- nothing too fancy and nothing it should have a problem with. Yet it's not working.

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hangs On Text Mode With Some Info

Jan 8, 2011

I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.

For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.

Ubuntu :: LiveCD - Can't Get Past Login & Password - Puter Just Hangs

May 23, 2011

I'm in LiveCD (Natty) I blew up the OS. Can't get past login & password. 'Puter just hangs there. I'm going to do a clean install, but want to make a copy of my /home. I tried gksudo nautilus to copy all of /home to an external hard drive (via USB). It won't copy all, saying that I lack permissions. I've read about recursively copying, etc. and cannot make out the sequence I need. I must copy all that is in my /home and preserve all the links, dependencies, file and directory ownership permissions and also must get the command for copying them from the external hard drive if the clean install goes bad.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade And LiveCD Hangs On Sandy Bridge

Apr 29, 2011

I have an i5 sandy bridge PC with a gigabyte H67M mobo. I have been running maverick amd64 till yesterday. On maverick graphic acceleration didn't work so I decided to upgrade. After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?

Debian :: Cups Not Starting With The Server / Getting Error Unable To Read Configuration File '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - Exiting?

Feb 24, 2011

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message

cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!

The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.

My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

Mar 22, 2011

cupsd has ceased starting at boot time. It is checked off in System->Administration->BootUp Manager, and it runs fine from the command line. But not at boot. This is not the problem reported here.I suspect there are a couple more processes that have stopped running, but their absence hasn't been obvious yet.FWIW, I'm running 10.04 with the 2.6.35-22 kernel.

Software :: Setting Up CUPS / Configure Cupsd.conf For Security?

Apr 21, 2010

Using Debian Lenny.I am new to printing with Linux and would like some help with CUPS. I have CUPS set up to work with my printer.I read through the documentation, but still have some problems.

1. How should I configure cupsd.conf for security?

Quote:

Portwalling

* By default, cups will listen on every interface. Unless you want to offer your printer to the world, you must block this.Although you can firewall this (and that is a good idea anyway),you can also not have cups listen on your Internet connection. This also prevents any possibility of a root exploit from the Internet. Of course, you still have internal crackers to worry about...

* In cups.conf, comment out the lines:
Port 80
Port 631
* Replace them with:
Listen 127.0.0.1:631
code....

How do I create a symbolic link between programs? When I opened Xpp it said Printer:destination not available.

4. Can I adjust the text size on text, pdf or html files with Cups or do I need another program for this?

Debian Installation :: LiveCD - No Proper Display

Dec 15, 2014

I intend to switch to Debian form PCLinuxOS. I am not an experienced Linux user. But I intend to switch all my machines to Linux. I have used Antix as well on an older machine. I am a bit familiar with the basic Linux CLI commands.

I intend to switch to Debian as I think the support (Forums and probably mailinglist) are more active then PCLoS and Antix. Sadly enough though the live cd gives a problem which no distro gave on the same machine. And I really do not know what to do about it.

When starting the first line that prints is:

Umount: can't mount /live overlay: Device or resource busy

Everything is working out just fine, but I thought it would be very nice to have an installer. I read about the refractainstaller and refractasnapshot in this post, and thought they sound like a good solution: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=54635#p315738 However, the links seem to be dead and so were all the mirrors I tried. Debian Configuration :: Making A LiveCD To Resemble An Exact HDD Installation?

Nov 13, 2010

I've been trying to make a live CD off an installation with minimalist deviation possible. Purpose is to check the hardware compatibility using the live CD, after which I'll copy the installation to the hard drive (which will probably be a squashed image) and do the necessary edits to make the system bootable. Since the rootfs will be copied over (not dd, but direct cp --preserve=all), the difference from the actual install should be minimal.

If there are any caveats using this procedure, do notify.

I've been succeeded in doing this using Gentoo but it appears the Gentoo kernel uses Gentoo specific kernel parameters which makes things very simple, but I gotta do this with the generic Debian kernel.

If it can be done easily using a script I would also like to know exactly how it's done so I can reproduce it by hand even to make an ro rootfs and possibly reproducing the same with other distros.

Debian :: Custom Image Hangs

May 31, 2015

I'm working on a custom Debian "spin" (one customized for personal/work use). I did this once before with an Ubuntu build, but attempting it with Debian has loaded me with a steady flow of walls (everyone loves debugging!). Despite a variety of approaches, none of my images seem to boot. I've tried the following with both SysV and systemd. the search results I find are vague, at best. I'll attempt to categorize and explain this as intelligently as possible.

A variety of ISOs were tried in Virtualbox, so these are the errors they're yielding; I'm currently down on removable media since I loaned my flash disks to a couple students for their finals, so I can't boot that way until Tuesday. I really hope that the error is something that can be identified regardless of whether or not I'm using a virtual environment.

Method 1: This Guide
This appealed to me the most at first because I run a stripped-the-hell-down version of Ubuntu on my work laptop. (Wheezy/Haswell yielded unfavorable results, and at the time Jessie's SysV compatibility was undesirable, but I'll probably switch back by the end of the week if possible.) I have a feeling that this guide may simply be obsolete, or maybe I'm just neglecting a crucial step. Here's the output: a lovely kernel panic.

Method 2: refractasnapshot
With it properly configured (and with syslinux-utils installed -- head-on-a-stick and fsmithred), I tried two different approaches: the first, I ran it within the chroot environment mentioned above; the second, I created a Virtualbox build and ran it within that. Both yielded the same errors:

For each, I received two complains: about piix_smbus and no valid rapl domains, and the system hangs indefinitely (ie, all night). Following some search results, I blacklisted i2c_piix4 and paevm, then rebuilt the image, and mounted it in VirtualBox. At boot:

Code: Select allEDD: Error 0c00 reading sector 276375
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot: _

Debian :: Iceweasel Hangs When Launched Sometimes?

Jan 11, 2011

I am running Squeeze (Gnome desktop) and I'm experiencing some problems with Iceweasel. My problem is that sometimes Iceweasel just hangs when I launch it. I can see the cursor blinking 2-3 times in the adress bar and then it just locks up. I have tried a few different versions of iceweasel, both from stable (squeeze though), experimental and now a package from http://mozilla.debian.net/packages/ with iceweasel 4 beta.

All of them behaves the same way. They work for a while and then suddenly locks up when launched. The only way to get going again is to kill the process and delete the .mozilla directory. It is possible to launch the --safe-mode though but nothing with this mode lets me change anything to get a normal session going.' Also, it doesn't matter if I have extensions installed or not, it still behaves the same way with zero of them installed. How would I go about to debug this? If I launch iceweasel from the command line I get no output but I'm sure there is a way to get some more info to work with.

Debian :: Computer Hangs And Sometimes Won't Reboot?

Jan 18, 2011

Computer hangs and sometimes won't reboot.

When it hangs I have seen this message a few times:

o[4348] EXT3-fs error (device sda1) ext3_get_imode_loc : unable to read inode block_inode = 14720620 block = 58753255

Also when the machine boots up I get a message saying something about IOMMU should be set in BIOS, but I can not find any such setting in BIOS. I do not know if this is related to the hanging.

I thought I had a hard drive problem at first so I tried a different hard drive. Same problem.

The mother board is an ASRock N68C-S.

One other thing, where is the file located that boot up messages are written to?
