Ubuntu :: LiveCD - Can't Get Past Login & Password - Puter Just Hangs

May 23, 2011

I'm in LiveCD (Natty) I blew up the OS. Can't get past login & password. 'Puter just hangs there. I'm going to do a clean install, but want to make a copy of my /home. I tried gksudo nautilus to copy all of /home to an external hard drive (via USB). It won't copy all, saying that I lack permissions. I've read about recursively copying, etc. and cannot make out the sequence I need. I must copy all that is in my /home and preserve all the links, dependencies, file and directory ownership permissions and also must get the command for copying them from the external hard drive if the clean install goes bad.

Seems like a nasty bug in F13.after typing in wrong password, a 2nd correct attempt on gdm (or kdm) leads to a dark screen with a dash cursor blinking on the upper left - have to turn machine off. Then on next login, memory seems to race until properly shut down.

Ubuntu :: LiveCD Does Not Get Past Initial Screen / Troubleshoot It?

Apr 5, 2011

My laptop recently died and I have invested in a new desktop. The specs are as follows code...

Anyhow, I had been running 10.10 on that laptop. Everything ran swimmingly (until the internal components died of course). I am currently running XP on the desktop and am looking to run 10.10 again as a dual boot. I already partitioned off 200gigs for Ubuntu upon set up of XP. I have tried using the USB LiveCD I used for my first install on the laptop, as well as a LiveCD CD I had created for the laptop. Neither one worked. The LiveCD came up with an error and the USB got to the point where there was the purple screen with white dots and it never got past that point.

I downloaded a brand new 10.10 disc earlier today and I got to the point where the white line blinks on the black screen. Unfortunately that is as far as the boot got. It has some initial writing at the top of the screen saying it was loading a process, and then it produced an error of a int file of some sort. I'll go back and try it again and get a better grasp on the error. Also, after the error message I was given the ability to type commands (it actually told me to type 'help' for a list of the commands available to me), but I had no clue what to do with them.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Past Login Screen

Mar 8, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 for about two months now and it became my primary OS. I was in a hurry last night so I powered off laptop in a "bad way" - pressing the off button while the computer was running wipe. Today I tried to start Ubuntu but I can't get past the login screen which, also, looks like it switched to a "simple" theme - like in Windows xp when you turn off theme and GUI switches to "simple" theme. On this same screen there is a message saying something like "Configuration error! Power manager configuration isn't configured correctly." in the upper right corner. f I enter my username and pass it just resets to login screen again after a few seconds.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Past Login Screen In 10.04

I am trying to get Kubuntu 10.04 to work. When I install it on this PC, it works up to the login screen. When I login, it acts as if it were logging in. But then it takes me back to the login screen. Ubuntu 10.04 works fine on this PC, but I prefer KDE. Could this be a problem with the graphics card?I can't even use the basic desktop effects in Ubuntu (gnome)

Ubuntu :: Can't Login - Can't Get Past Name Selection

Jun 6, 2011

I can't seem to login into ubuntu this morning. I'm using 11.04 64 bit. It's been working fine for a few weeks, but this morning I select my name with the mouse and it just returns to the same initial screen after a millisecond. The password box does not come up.

The last thing I did yesterday was add another user - would that have caused any issues (or a red herring)?

I went to a terminal and deleted that user (sudo userdel -r <username>) but that hasn't helped.

2. re-booted.

3. "ubuntu" is displayed center screen with five dots below text (sequencing white and red).

4. screen jumps to alternating horizontal bars (green & purple plus green & pink sections) about 1/4 inch high.

5. cd activity light stops blinking.

6. no standard desktop ever appears.

- Asus A8N-VM CSM with integrated nVidia C51PV [GeForce 6150] display

Has anyone else run across this? Obviously, trying to convince a friend to switch to ubuntu using this CD would not be good.

I came accross a post that said uninstalling pulseaudio would cure the problem - so i did through software centre. When I was uninstalling it there was configuration files to uninstall as well. When I shut down the laptop and tried to restart it, it goes to login screen with my name but when I click on login it goes back to the same screen. This is the first time this has happened and im not sure what I can do.

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hangs On Text Mode With Some Info

Jan 8, 2011

I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.

For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Stuck Past Login Screen

Jan 29, 2010

I made a little change this morning on my karmic laptop, and now after it boots up and I enter my username/psswd, it remains perpetually stuck on the loading page that usually shows only for a couple of seconds. I never actually get to my desktop.

This morning, I thought I would try adding another panel to my Desktop, but I thought that if I added it with the position 'top', it would automatically pop underneath my default top panel. So I would have two panels one under the other, like you often do in firefox. I also immediately set my new panel on 'auto-hide'. Right after, the new panel showed up ABOVE my default panel (like z-axis, covering my default panel) and my screen was absolutely frozen. All my desktop icons disappeared and mouse clicks and keyboard strokes would do nothing.

I was forced to hit ctrl+alt+f3 and do a reboot. Ever since, I have been stuck in this mode. Perhaps if I could access the config file for desktop panels (if there is one), then I could try and revert my changes.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Past Login Screen In 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Jun 11, 2010

I installed Ubuntu for the first time yesterday by running Wubi on Windows Vista Home Premium. For all of yesterday and up to lunchtime today Ubuntu was working fine. I followed the instructions on a forum post to remove Evolution Mail via the synaptic applications menu. I proceeded to log out of Ubuntu and reboot (I hoestly can't remember what for) Anyway, ever since I have not been able to log in to Ubuntu. I enter my username and password as normal and they are accepted, however moments the log in page displays again. This continues in an endless loop. The password is definitely correct because I get an authentication error if I enter anything else. I know I am not the only person experiencing this issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade And LiveCD Hangs On Sandy Bridge

Apr 29, 2011

I have an i5 sandy bridge PC with a gigabyte H67M mobo. I have been running maverick amd64 till yesterday. On maverick graphic acceleration didn't work so I decided to upgrade. After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?

Ubuntu :: Sudo And Login Password Recognized - Password Box Does Not Like

Apr 27, 2010

I needed to use Synaptic Package Manager to install an app, but the dialog box ("enter the Administrative Password") that pops up before you can use Synaptic doesn't recognize my password ("incorrect password). I tried typing it into a text editor and it's spelled right, caps lock not turned on or anything.

In Terminal, sudo recognizes it, and it is recognized when I log into Ubuntu. I'm the sole user, I have admin privileges, I've been doing admin things.

I just now did System > Administration > Users and Groups and got a dialog box saying

"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)"

Moving past that, I changed my user password, and Ubuntu authenticated it.

How do you launch Synaptic Package Manager from the command line?

Apr 15, 2011

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.

I did like: hostname myNewName

And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.

My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
