Ubuntu :: KDE KWIN Crash Every Time Exiting A Full Screen Game?

Jun 21, 2011

I'm having a strange problem with KDE, to which there may be no solution but thought I'd ask anyway. I play several games (Neverball, several MAME games and even ZSNES and others) and it seems that if I have desktop effects turned on, KWIN will crash every time I exit a full screen game such as those mentioned above and others. If I disable desktop effects before starting the game, everything is fine. The games themselves run fine while desktop effects are enabled, I don't have to remember to disable desktop effects before clicking on a game.

Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?

Jun 14, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:

grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Taking Longer Time (90 Seconds) To Boot

Nov 7, 2010

My ubuntu(10.10) installation takes a relatively longer time (90 seconds) to boot. I think part of the problem might be related to an error message during boot related to usb drivers.
Code:

[3.244051] usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[12.029046] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.35/drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c: usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed
I have attached the relevant part of dmesg output also.

Fedora :: 13 - Screen Goes Black For A Few Seconds And Then Returns To The Login Screen

Mar 7, 2011

This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.

When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:

Apr 8, 2011

I upgraded a HP Proliant server to openSUSE 11.4 (X86-64) with KDE, and I'm encountering various graphical problems. This machine's been running SUSE versions since 11.0 on similar hardware with few major issues, and I did the 'upgrade' by a new install keeping only /home partition intact. This Server has 10GB memory. It has a PCI ATI ES1000 with 64MB and uses the radeon driver. It boots up fine under the monitor's correct resolution of 1600*1000, but

1) It flickers one time each 4 of 5 seconds
2) during works more and more memory is used : starting at 9% and going up to 51% after 20 minutes and I receive then allocation error in /var/log/messages

Ubuntu :: System Crash While Booting Up For Second Time?

Feb 3, 2010

System specs:
Compaq presario 430-EB
4 GIG RAM
320 GIG storage
AMD athlon dual core x64 2.1 mghz processor
Nvidia 8200 M

I recently decided to partition my laptop wholly to ubuntu, so i installed ubuntu without any problem, then i logged on for the first time and i installed the driver to my monitor (nvidia) and i did sudo apt-get update which made me get all sorts of updates, untill the updating stopped at about halfway asking me to reboot the system.

I rebooted the system, but no matter what i do, if i run it in recovery mode or not, i always get stuck on this piece of code on a black screen:

Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
/dev/sda1: clean, 148123/18841600 files, 1880615/75358899 blocks
init: udevtrigger main process (540) terminated with status 1
init: udevtrigger post-stop process (541) terminated with status 1
init: udevmonitor main process (539) killed by TERM signal
init: networking main process (544) terminated with status 1

Also, please no answers like "hav u tried liek reinstalling ubuntu lolz?" because i wouldn't bother posting this thread if i considered doing that -_-'

Ubuntu :: Get A Blank Screen With A Cursor For A Few Seconds?

Mar 22, 2010

I shut down my laptop, which is running Ubuntu 9.10, without any problems. When I got home and tried to boot it, it finishes the POST and then I get a blank screen with a cursor for a few seconds. The word "GRUB" then appears in the upper left hand corner and that's it. The system is hung and I have to power off.

I've seen a lot of discussion that 9.10 uses grub2. Any ideas how I get out of this? Do I need to downgrade to legacy grub?

Ubuntu :: Edit The Boot Screen So Instead Of 14 Seconds

Nov 12, 2010

I dual boot Ubuntu with Windows, so every time I turn on my computer, I have to choose a system.

I rarely use Windows, but I still need it on here for some applications. Being that I'm going to be using Ubuntu 90% of the time, I was wondering if there was a way to boot directly to Ubuntu without erasing Windows.

Is this possible? I'd want to be able to press a key at start up or something so I can still use Windows if I want to.

If that's not possible, how do I edit the boot screen so instead of 14 seconds (or whatever it is), it boots Ubuntu in one or two seconds?

Ubuntu :: Screen / Everything Freezes From Time To Time For No Reason In Natty?

May 4, 2011

Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.

Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.

Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).

It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

Debian Hardware :: ATI HD 5850 Drivers Crash Every Time

Sep 30, 2015

I installed debian stretch with cinnamon, I logged into it for the first time, It had no hardware acceleration and another driver was missing so I installed linux-firmware-nonfree and firmware-realtek.After reboot the screen turns black immediately and the entire system fails (keyboard isn't responding to anything).I've since tried to briefly switch to the proprietary ati driver and after a standard installation followed by aticonfig --initial. It showed the graphical login screen fine but logging in resulted in a blank desktop. It might be worth mentioning that I've encountered similar problems with other distros that use newer packages.I don't care whether the driver is proprietary or not, I just want a working display.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Installed OSuse 11.3, And X11 And KDE Crash All The Time?

Oct 4, 2010

I just installed OpenSuse 11.3 (I had tried an update from 11.2, but it was clearly not working so I did a fresh installation from scratch even removing my .kde/.kde4 directories) on my Dell latitude E4300.

The X11 server (or KDE?) is clearly not working properly: 1- the display settings are never saved whatever I do (I have two screens and it goes to a stupid 1024x768 automatically although the 1900x1200 for the big screen is the "Auto" option)2- after some time, the X11 server goes mad: changing from desktop 1 to 2 etc it flashes, blinks, sometimes does not go through or goes from 1 to 2 and back. The windows are not refreshed, sometimes it goes all black or grey. to be frank this is the worst upgrade I have done in ages. Is there any reason for such crazy behaviour from x11/KDE? I have:

* OpenSuse 11.3 last update (stable) running x86_64 version
* Mobile Intel Gm45 Express Chipset, mobile 4 series chipset integrated graphics controller
* LCD monitor (MT291 133Ev3) + attached DELL 2408 WFP
* kernel-desktop 2.6.34.7-0.3.1-x86_64, kernel-firmware 20100617-2.2-noarch
