Ubuntu Installation :: Best 'run From USB' Method?
Jan 24, 2010
I see there are a couple methods out there to install Ubuntu on a USB stick.Which is the best one? I want to be able to run it completely from there and install my own software from APT.I don't care about installing Ubuntu *from* that USB stick. Which is the method I want?

I'm trying to get Kubuntu 10.04 (x64) installed and everything I do fails, hard. I don't have exact details at the moment since this is a process I've been slowly working on for the last couple weeks, but here's a quick rundown:
- Can boot into the Live CD environment fine. When attempting to install from there, the installer sees my drives incorrectly. If I remember correctly, it views my 2nd drive fine (of 3 identical drives), but it thinks my other two drives are part of a raid setup (they're not supposed to be). I could probably install on here, but I'm not about to risk my existing XP install to try.
- When I try to use wubi to install in Windows, it appears to setup the installation fine, but upon restarting it tells me that it cannot find the ubuntu.iso file and that my drive is probably dirty (run chkdsk). It still says this even after running chkdsk and restarting gracefully.
- I've run the "Check CD for defects" thing and it says the CD is okay. My memory seems to be fine as well.
- I've 3 identical Seagate 250gb SATA drives installed on a MSI k9a2 platinum board. These are not setup in any kind of RAID setup.

Currently I've got Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 (I believe) on my laptop, with two separate partitions.I want to format the laptop and only have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on there, but since the CD drive is broken, I've just been trying to do it from USB. There must be something wrong with my laptop/booting from USB, because I've tried two different programs used to create Live USB installations (UNetbootin and Universal-USB-Installer). Both of them load the menu, let me select to install or run the Live CD, but neither of them get past the purple-ish Ubuntu loading screen. The screen just goes black (But stays lit), and nothing else happens.
So I'm wondering if there is different, easy-ish method for installing Ubuntu 10.04 to this laptop. It's got a working network adapter,

I'm looking into using fedora as my first Linux OS, read rookie, I have an old HP PC with a brand new hard drive. I downloaded the 'F10-i686-Live.iso' file and tried to boot from it. It brought up a Fedora screen with various boot options and a memory test. I did the test which completed a successful pass. I then tried to boot from it, it showed the horizontal loading bar which turned white, after which the screen went black. From there the screen switched from blank to 'lit up black' , sometimes it showed a cursor which was mouse responsive, sometimes it showed a blinking underline cursor in the top left corner of the screen. Eventually it just stayed blank. Any threads I've checked are irrelevant or refer to a more options or command line option that isn't on the setup screen. Have I the right file/method?

I will be version-upgrading a friends (Ubuntu only) laptop very soon. It is 9.04 now and the new version will be (ideally) 10.04.1 The machine has a large unused area on the hard drive and who has known this situation was to use the uncommitted area to do a complete new install of 10.04.1, leaving the 9.04 unchanged (useful insurance). Then, copy, paste (?) the /home directory from the 9.04 into the newly completed installed 10.04.1 overwriting the installed directory.
Opinions seem to support the notion that such a paste into 10.04.1 is likely to be successful and trouble free as long as the 10.04.1 installing username is the same as the 9.04 username with same privilege level. I would be grateful for comments here, particularly with any details, gotchas, you can see.

Installed a test system and I messed up. I let the installer use the entire 200gb for F12 install when I only wanted to use 100gb. Since it is test and new install I could just blow it away and start over but decided to use this as a learning opportunity. I chose all the defaults on the install so my partition is ext4. Since the partition I want to resize is in use while the system is up, I need to do this offline.
I have read a bit and it looks like there are couple of methods I could use. I have an install DVD and a Live CD so I could use either. If I could use a GUI that would be nice but I do not know how to access that if there is one. I have already booted to the Live CD and figured out how to access the command line tools (resize2fs and lvm) although I have not figured out how to use them yet.

After recently looking around the Linux world, I decided that I would also like to try fedora. Primarily because of the BTRFS file system that I would like to try out while still having Ubuntu as my main OS. Normally, I'd just partition as usual as I would with any of my other OSs, however this is the first time I have tried to dual boot two Linux installs on two different file systems. Does anybody have a better method of going about this? Or to just go about it as usual and install on two different partitions? Also, I do not want to wipe the data from the computer as it is now. I have it all backed up, but I don't really want to go through the hassle.

I have finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my current Linux system from Fedora Core 2 to Fedora 15. When checking the download page and from reading another thread there is apparently no isos' available for an set of install CDs. An iso is only available for DVD. Since my machine does not have a DVD drive that is obviously not an option. In the past I have only installed from a set CDs and I'm not sure which install method is the best to use. I do have a DSL internet connection and will probably need to increase my partitions sizes. Which install method do you recommend and why?

Unfortunately, when I try to install Debian off the DVD, the wireless gets disconnected right when it tells me to choose my method of connecting to the net. It then gives me three choices of connecting - wired, unknown, and wireless. I must be missing something, because when I choose wireless, it says it fails, and cannot find anything to connect to. I input the SSID and password manually and it says its not there. So I quit the install and go back to the desktop and reconnect no problems.

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb
In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD
Chose advanced istall
Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.
Boot Info:
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 [code]....
ls: reading directory sda6/: Input/output error
I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.

I have a question regarding partitioning method for Ubuntu.Originally I had two partitions C 80GB (Win 7) and D about 160GB (my personal data) both NTFS. What I've done, through Windows 7's Disk Management tool I shrunk partition D and created unallocated space of 23 GB on the drive. Then, I divided this space on two partitions one 20GB (as /) and another one 3GB (as swap) and I formatted them in NTFS. After this operation I started installing Ubuntu 10.10 and I reformatted both of them for 20GB using ext4 file system assigning it as / mount point and 3GB as swap.
My question is does it really matter where I created these partitions? Are they equivalent to if I created them during Ubuntu installation (using free space instead)?

I have come across a fairly minor issue however. When using any IM clients I am unable to login to MSN using the direct connection method. Instead I find myself having to connect using the HTTP method. I wouldn't worry about this except many of my contacts are complaining that they are getting "message unabled to be delivered" errors regularly when trying to contact me.

Due to recent releases of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint/Mint KDE, I'm pretty near ready to take the plunge full time into Linux on my main desktop machine. Just one thing stopping me though at the moment... folder synchronization.
I have the following setup:
1) Desktop machine running Mint KDE or Gnome hard wired to a Netgear DG834GT router.
2) Archived files stored on a dedicated partition mounted as /home/lucas/archive.
3) Laptop running Windows 7 also hard wired to the router.
4) Shared folder on the Windows 7 laptop called "Archive" on a dedicated "Data" partition.
What I would like to do is synchronize the folder specified in 2 above to the shared folder specified in 4 above.
In Windows I use SyncBackPro to synchronize folders. Is there anything similar in Linux?

I managed to half fix my earlier problem of being unable to clone my desktop monitor to my TV. I set the configuration to TwinView, and the resolution to the same as my desktop (Doh) and that seemed to at least get my desktop the way it used to be.
The problem now is the TV. It's cutting off a lot of pixels, and I can get it almost to fit if I enable flat panel scaling and set GPU Scaling Method to "Centered". However, when I restart the X server, it always returns to "Stretched". I've tried saving it from nvidia-settings (nothing seems to happen to the xorg.conf file,) and ala [URL] s have tried to put some version of
Code:
Option "FlatPanelProperties" "DFP-0: Scaling = Centered"
or
Code:
Option "FlatPanelProperties" "Scaling = Centered"

I have access to a video stream that is only available in certain areas. I would like to re-broadcast this stream to other users. What method would you suggest? I tried using WebCamStudio but that method basically records my desktop and the video quality degrades to the point of being unable to view it clearly. I've seen some pretty clear re-broadcast streams on justin.tv or ustream, but typically when I ask the operator they're using some type of Windows software. Does anyone have a suggestion for doing this on Ubuntu? Does anyone here do any live streams or re-broadcasts using Ubuntu, or any Linux-based distro?

Aim:
I want to look/log for internal system calls that are being made after i do 'make' command in bash terminal. So that after the make is done, i can look and study the internal method/file calls made while make was happening. In this way i will come to know how the actual building process works.
