Ubuntu :: Check The File's Compress Method?
Feb 1, 2011
I have a compressed text file. The method of compress is unknown.I can see the file contents by using Midnight Commander without a problem but I would like to view the file just with cat. So I am trying to uncompress the file with unzip or gunzip but it does not work.How to check the method the file is compressed with? Is any way to find it with Midnight Commander?

I am trying to compress a folder by right clicking and selecting Compress...I get the following error:
An error occurred while adding files to the archive.No such file or directory
I want the folder and its content to be compressed to a .ZIP file which is natively accessible by Windows.

I am trying to compress a folder and the contents within, while keeping the permissions the same. I then need to check if the compress file is corrupt or not. Base on that result I need to transfer the file.
cd /home/ops/Desktop/temp
tar cvzfp backup-"$(date +%d-%b-%y)".tar.gz /home/ops/Desktop/dir1
gunzip -tl backup-"$(date +%d-%b-%y)".tar.gz

I am running fedora 14 32 bit. I have upgraded from fedora 12 through 13 to 14 using the preupgrade method. I just ran a yum check which threw the following errors.
[Code]....
Odd that system-config-display is still a fc12 version and it seems it didn't get upgraded. I have no system issues.

I download a lot of files that have been compressed into separate pieces by winrar, so that a 4gb file will be shown as dozen or so 93mb peices. In windows, using winrar, extracting them was rather easy but in Kubuntu whatever default program is being used throws a fit. In a perfect world I would want to get a open source alternative from synaptic, alternatively anything I can download in RPM I can eventually figure out. I want to avoid trying to get winrar working under wine.

I'm trying to clean up an iTunes-sorted Music directory. For whatever reason, it contains a large number of folders that have album art, but no music. I'm actually more concerned about a safe way to test my removal batch, but I thought I'd paste everything I did in case it's useful to someone. Based on this thread, I came up with the following script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
find ./*/* -type f -iregex ".*(mp3|m4a)" | sort | while read line ; do
echo "${line%/*}" >> file1
done
sort -u file1 > fileuniq
[Code]...
But I'm scared to just run this on my music folder. Is there any way to run rm in "test mode", so that I would just see verbose output, but it wouldn't actually delete anything? Failing that, does anyone see anything wrong with my plan?

I'm looking into using fedora as my first Linux OS, read rookie, I have an old HP PC with a brand new hard drive. I downloaded the 'F10-i686-Live.iso' file and tried to boot from it. It brought up a Fedora screen with various boot options and a memory test. I did the test which completed a successful pass. I then tried to boot from it, it showed the horizontal loading bar which turned white, after which the screen went black. From there the screen switched from blank to 'lit up black' , sometimes it showed a cursor which was mouse responsive, sometimes it showed a blinking underline cursor in the top left corner of the screen. Eventually it just stayed blank. Any threads I've checked are irrelevant or refer to a more options or command line option that isn't on the setup screen. Have I the right file/method?

The way I organize all my files into their folders, they add up quickly. I like having a quick way to keep more frequently accessed folders at the top of the list in explorer. In windows, folder "[zippidy do da]" would appear above folder "aardvark" because of the brackets, but Ubuntu's file browser ignores the brackets, making my old method ineffective. I could put a zero in front of such folders

my partitioning layout was as follows
Vista Recovery
Windows 7
GRUB
Extended
-->Fedora 12 (ext4)
so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

I want to be able to check the contents of a text file for a specific string and remove it from the file from the command prompt. I would basically be searching through a number of files and if a specific string is found I would like it removed automatically. pretty much a find and replace, were the replace is nothing. any one got any ideas on how you would do this. I already have the search part sorted just need to be able to remove the string I don't want from the multiple files.

i am writing a script for my ubuntu server and basically i want it to download a file that i specifically type in then take that file put it in a certain folder (note file may or may not be archived so i'd have to check for that) then add the name of that file to a text file.i know sounds strange but this is what i got so far:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo "-----Star of Script-----"
echo "Please enter URL:"
read URL
cd testdir
wget $URL
//extraction here + delete original archive (rar,zip,anything :S)
echo name_of_file >> list.txt
echo "-----End of Script-----"

I just read in my Linux+ resources that it is not a wise idea to compress tar files with gzip if my tape drive supports compression. In addition, the resources mention that using gzip for tar files runs the risk of data lost if an error occurs with the compression.
Does anyone compress tar files for major backups/restore policies?
