Ubuntu Networking :: Best Method To Synchronize Folders ?

Due to recent releases of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint/Mint KDE, I'm pretty near ready to take the plunge full time into Linux on my main desktop machine. Just one thing stopping me though at the moment... folder synchronization.
I have the following setup:
1) Desktop machine running Mint KDE or Gnome hard wired to a Netgear DG834GT router.
2) Archived files stored on a dedicated partition mounted as /home/lucas/archive.
3) Laptop running Windows 7 also hard wired to the router.
4) Shared folder on the Windows 7 laptop called "Archive" on a dedicated "Data" partition.
What I would like to do is synchronize the folder specified in 2 above to the shared folder specified in 4 above.
In Windows I use SyncBackPro to synchronize folders. Is there anything similar in Linux?
On Ubuntu 10.10 x64, when trying to sync via right click "Ubuntu One/Synchroniser ce dossier" Synchronize to Ubuntu One, nothing happens. When within the "Documents" folder I select "Synchroniser ce dossier" Synchronize this folder from the upper right section of the window I get an error message: "Erreur lors de l'activation du dossier. Impossible d'activer la synchronisation du dossier /home/ao/Documents avec Ubuntu One"

Within the Ubuntu One app, my computer is identified and connected.
I have made a backup of my files on a remote server and I'd like to maintain that backup using rsync. The problem is that the timestamps don't match perfectly between the source and the backup.
What can I do? I'd rather not replace all the files in my backup because there is so much data it would take a very very long time.
Is there perhaps a way to compare checksums and then update the timestamps? Both are low power boxes with no GUI and only BusyBox CLI access.
I'd like to kindly ask you if you don't know any software or script I can use to synchronize two folders. I'm using Dropbox and I'd like to have there up to date datas. But I would like to work on the files (tex and pdfs ) at my home folder at some other place than right in the dropbox folder. Anyway I'd like to have the files in dropbox synchronized. where syncml resides in bluez or how i can use syncml with bluez to synchronize my phone and desktop or how I can integrate syncml with bluez? which packages and application should be required?

I installed and configured a squid transparent proxy on my linux os at work. Also it is veryslow but every thing is ok while I do not try to use port 443,so when I try to use sites like mail.yahoo.com or other which are using https(443) port and the method used is CONNECT I see some errors in access.log like:

I'm trying to shape bandwidth using HTB method and filtering classes with destination mac address. for this I've found two codes but none of them seem to filter bandwidth as i want (test with iperf)

I am using Debian 5 and I have some networking experience, however I want to learn to do this the best way possible. I have a Debian box with two nics and I want to connect that to a switch and use my Debian box as a router basically, as well as having a firewall setup within that too.
Should I use iptables to set up nat or the route command or what? I just want to know the group of tools to use in order to set up my network. Network diagram: Internet <------> Debian Box <----> switch <----> hosts I found some guides but they are for linux 2.4 and i'm not sure if they are right.
I do not have any shares setup on my home network so this has never been a big deal to me. My mother finally took enough interest in my operating system to allow me to dual boot 3 of her computers. Everything was up and running like a charm and then she asked "What about connecting to the file server?"
I click on "network" under nautilus and start clicking around - no where in here is the file server that every Windows system on the network can see (5 or so other systems with xp/vista/7 on them - so I know the share works). A small bit of time and some command life foo later I had hunted down and manually mounted the share and added and fstab entry for the drive so my mother would never have to go through that on her own.
That being said - did I do things the hardway here? Can someone please tell me there is an easy method that successfully detects and connects to samba shares without having to resort to CLI? Personally I do not mind doing this, but it is an issue when I am installing Linux for a beginner.
Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

I have a shared NTFS partition ("shared") that I use for data for both Windows and Ubuntu. How can I mount the music folder on shared to $Home/Music, and the Videos folder on shared to $Home/Videos? I want to mount the different folders on the partition to different folders in home.

Naturally, since it runs Linux, it's unable to synchronize with other Linux devices. It's one of those wacky universal constants you can't seem to understand.
I've tried using SyncEvolution, which supports funambol, but it does not work. It keeps complaining about a failed authentication or whatnot.
When I right click a folder and select synchronize it does not sync. It continues to say synchronize on one. When I selected my music folder back in December it worked, but now it doesn't. It continues to work for the music folder and 1 other folder. I can't simply add my documents folder.How do I force one to sync my documents folder.

I am setting up a gateway Ubuntu box and trying to do this the easiest way possible. Using Network Manager in LL 10.04 I have eth1 (usb) accessing the net and eth0 (wired) set up and working. eth1 has a static IP address of 192.168.0.2 and the USB box has 192.168.1.1. This works and I have no issues with eth0. In order to allow eth1 to "share" the connection I have gone toIPv4 and change the method to "Shared to this computer".
Network-Manager automatically starts a dhcp server and assigns ip's from the 10.x.x.x class of IP's. I want to change the assignable ip range to come from 192.168.1.x. I have figured out that it is set in the dnsmasq-base package as uninstalling this and using:

I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it
The Problem was I wanted to open my /home/Pictures folder and have it display the contents of the My Pictures folder in my windows partition. This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. How can I synchronize my external hdd to a folder on my internal hdd. e.g. when I change something on my external, the folder (on the internal) should be updated to the state of my external (deletes, changes, new files..). but I don't want to make this frequently, so I just need a command to do that. at best secure and without additionally installation.

I have one local mail server hosted in Mdaemon in my office and ip is 192.168.10.2. My clients can't use the email from the outside. If they want to use the mail, they need to come to office. I want them to use from the outside. How can i set up the mail server. Do i need to host the server on the hosting? I want to synchronize with my local mail server. I don't have the public IP BTW.
I have had no problem setting up Evolution to send/recieve email from MSN but it doesnt not sycronize the calander or contacts which I find a must (as I use the calendar and contact info for all my business apointments/ contacts). Is there a way to setup Evolution to sycronize with MSN all contact y calendar info? subject as on the internet I only seem to find references to google (as well as in synaptic Package manager).
I have a local computer (local), and remote computer (remote) behind of remote server (server). Also, I have user access to all of these 3 machines. Now, I want mount some directory, located at remote, to my local mount-point via sshfs. How should I setup my local sshfs and what should be done on server to make this mounting?
I'm stuck with ssh tunneling because the default method for tunneling requires root access while WinSCP somehow could do this with only user access (the tunnel server could be configured there in 'tunnel' panel).
