However, I am still presented with the "Installation Method" and "Select Partition" screens when anaconda runs. Is the syntax of the repo boot option correct?
So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

I've tried installing 10.10 desktop, 9.04 netbook remix and just this minute 10.04 netbook versions of ubuntu, as well as other versions of various linux distros.
I woke up this morning and burnt 10.04 netbook to CD (not usb) as I wanted to put it on an old laptop with max resolution of 1024x768. I put it in an external CD drive and it boots up to the options screen on the Live CD, where you can choose to 'try Ubuntu netbook without installing' or 'install ubuntu netbook' etc.
The problem is, I can't click (press enter) on any of the options. The same problem arose with earlier versions, i.e 9.04 netbook remix Ubuntu.
Laptop model: Compaq Presario R3000.
I have created a customized RHEL 5.4 DVD and placed a Kickstart file in it.It is running fine except I have to manually choose "Local CDROM" in the installation process. (see attached pic)Any idea how to skip this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have never had a boot-splash screen on my dual-boot configuration; and I recently added something in Synaptic, probably by mistake, that added a Debian splash screen to my boot menu. I think it's much more attractive than the bare menu; however it's not appropriate for an Ubuntu distro. Also, I'd like to know how to add and select boot-splash screens, that will show behind my boot menu, like the Debian screen does.

I have just tryed to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto a USB to install on a netbook. I used the software recomended to prep the USB and booted to it.
In the opening menu where you can select to install on a partition I am unable to press enter, it seems to just reset the menu. The keyboard seems to be working fine because I can use the arrow keys.
I have been unable to find a solution to this problem online, all I have found is this simular issue, with no resolution.

The netbook I am using is the Samsung n220 which apparently works well with ubuntu.
Installed a test system and I messed up. I let the installer use the entire 200gb for F12 install when I only wanted to use 100gb. Since it is test and new install I could just blow it away and start over but decided to use this as a learning opportunity. I chose all the defaults on the install so my partition is ext4. Since the partition I want to resize is in use while the system is up, I need to do this offline.
I have read a bit and it looks like there are couple of methods I could use. I have an install DVD and a Live CD so I could use either. If I could use a GUI that would be nice but I do not know how to access that if there is one. I have already booted to the Live CD and figured out how to access the command line tools (resize2fs and lvm) although I have not figured out how to use them yet.
I am using MonoDevelop with SQL Server whenever I try to do use the Select method on the Datatable object the performance really detoriates it is 3 times slow than it is with .Net. Are there any work arounds?

It all works fine until step four, where you choose your partition. There are no choices. Simple as that. Continuing just tells me to fix that there are no partitions, but I cant. There are questions similar to mine on here, but none are answered.
I really need this installed and cant use the live version where I'm posting from now.
I've been using GNU/Linux for many years, and am finally taking steps to reduce Windows to a gaming platform only. One important category is photography. I've used the GIMP a lot and have been quietly browsing several photo apps for various tasks; they've really progressed in recent years. There is almost too much choice! On Windows I used XnView as my image viewer and for simple manipulations, but for batch JPG resizing I found Irfanview hard to beat. It has an intuitive interface for options, of which the following have become musts:
-Resize longest side, maintaining aspect ratio
-Specify the exact number of pixels
-Select a useful algorithm (usually cubic)
-Set JPG compression
-Process subdirectories recursively
-Write processed files to a new location, preserving subdirectory structure
-Confirm error-free operation or list errors
- A nice-to-have is visual feedback of progress during processing.
Up till now, the main purpose of this has been to downsize the ~3MB JPG images my digital camera makes for fast viewing-viewing images 640 pixels max side length instead of 3504 pixels, I can browse more efficiently, and watch my life in fast-forward, so to speak. So now I am moving everything to be done on Debian, and want to downsize my 80-GB collection to an intermediate resolution for my wife to work with. I'd like her to use a photo management app instead of doing everything by hand.
I could of course use Irfanview for the job and then copy everything to a *nix partition, but that's sort of not the point. I know the heavily promoted Imagemagick can do batch conversion efficiently and is used as a backend for a lot of apps, but I'm not sure whether it can preserve subdirectory structure; this is a must because of over 200 subdirectories. The mogrify command changes the original image, and it seems inefficient to copy 80 GB only to downsize it.
I'm sure that read-resize-write can be done preserving directory structure by using a script, and I'd be willing to do that in the future, but for now I lack experience and am not willing to use a script I don't understand. Otherwise, there seem to be few free apps that do batch resizing with the features above. I looked into Phatch, but it doesn't seem to let me set the exact resolution I want. I don't want to use Picasa until Google makes it free. Gwenview does batch resize, but doesn't seem to give all the options, unless I missed something.
I'm trying to install the ubuntu netbook remix on an older Eee PC (4 gig SSD drive), and it's not letting me get past the prepare the disk space.I'm booting from a USB key, and I can get it and do various things from the live image. However, when I go through the install, it gets to the "prepare disk space" screen, and then I can't proceed. im dual booting xp and ubuntu and there's a 30 gb on my drive C 16.4G is still unused.
I've not jumped on the Alpha/Beta upgrade's this time round so have decided to upgrade by doing a fresh install. I'm using the normal desktop install cd via usb. On the drive setup I choose to manually setup the partitions. I deleted the partition which help Lucid. Created a new partition with the root path. All good so far. I selected my home partition and selected use as 'ext2', entered /home as the mount point. Clicking ok to return, showed the /home partition as marked to be formatted, I was unable to change this ... so I decided to quit the installer and reboot ...
1st problem ... the root partition for Lucid was deleted, and a new empty partition created, despite the fact I had not confirmed the actions.
2nd problem ... rebooting with the live cd (which I'm on now) and running the installer, it hangs when I select manual partitioning.
I usually use wget to download stuff from websites when scripting.I have a new requirement that requires me to authenticate then select some options to execute the download. How would I go about this? First thing that comes to mind is using keyboard macros in the Windoz world but I need to do this in bash or perl.

Which works fine - except that I am going to clone this machine
and this will fail on all the other disks, which have a different serial number. It needs to be
resume=/dev/sda5
Similarly, /boot/grub/menu.lst has for root=
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD10EARS-00Y5B1_WD-WCAV55372533-part6
which will need to be /dev/sda6.
The part5 piece of this cannot be changed in yast. I selected that line, edited to /dev/sda5, and it came back the same way.
The part6 seems to be coming from /etc/fstab, changed it by hand to /dev/sda6, but it may not stay that way the next time yast runs. Similar changes to menu.lst did not survive a reboot, defaulting back to the "part5" syntax.
Is there some way to employ "/dev/sdX' syntax using yast, or is this one of those cases where one must work around the "help" of the easy configuration tool?
I had win xp and ubuntu in the laptop, but I have to format the xp partition, so now I have a new xp, but I can't see the ubuntu partition that is at the end of the hard drive, I mean to boot selecting between Ubuntu OR XP. What to do?

View 7 Replies View RelatedPurpose: Python, PHP, WebKit (hopefully), and pyqt development. There is Wubi for Ubuntu, which I am using right now. But Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't work well with my system. There is a Wubi like installer for Puppy Linux. There is Debian Win32 installer, but I think that does touch the partition table. My last option is to simply grab Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and hope it works. Would that be a viable solution considering my needs?

So i decided to that I wanted to run xp, ubuntu studio and slackware so I can learn about linux and do some other things with xp. I think I got through the installatiosa all fine and dandy, and I installed grub for my boot loader, I can boot into studio and xp, but I cant get into slackware. the grub boot menu is sorta funky too, it shows a generic and recovery mode for studio which is fine, and then another option for xp, some memory test boot option, but then for slackware it shows "Slackware Linux (Slackware 13.1.0) (on /dev/sda4) four times in a row. If I select any of them they all end up with some error; the third SW [slackware] option down the list of the repeated 4 allows me to sign into root, but when I type "startx" i get :
(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error: no screens found
but thats with a lot of other text above that. if you need any more details, please dont hesitate to request for them. I'm going to take some time and cool down. I'm trying to get these three OSes running from one HD. I've partitioned the 80 gig drive as follows
Primary 40 G NTSF for XP
Primary 2G Linux Swap
Primary 16G Slackware
Primary 18 U Studio
Primary
I was able to install Fedora 10 from the Live KDE CD, however I can't boot it.
I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.
There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:
boot from hard disk:
Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?
P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.
I tried to install F12 on my new IDE-HDD. The installation completed without any errors. But, when rebooting my PC I got a dark screen with error message: reboot and select proper boot device.
No BIOS boot up issue, since booting up using other hard disk running windows has no problem at all. I have set the hardisk jumper to master/primary, tried to re-install F12 a couples of time, but didn't make any difference.
i had a vista/windows 7 dual boot until recently...then i removed windows 7 and installed ubuntu..problem is when grub loads up if i select windows vista it wont boot but if i select windows 7 it will boot into windows vista.

View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time kubuntu updates its headers/boot image I get another version on disk in /boot. These also show up in menu choices when I boot. I currently have 7 or 8 versions and would like to get down to three or four.
In the past I just deleted the files of related versions from /boot but is this the preferred method? Is there a better/safer way to get rid of old kernels?
I just received my Slackware 13.1 & the 'Official Guide to Slackware Linux' book. I know that there is a big learning curve to use Slackware and that is why I purchased it - according to Distrowatch, "...if you learn Slackware, you learn Linux!" But, while I am 'learning Linux', I would still like to have a linux distro installed that would be more of a 'no-brainer'.
So the question is, which distro should I install first, Slackware or say, OpenSuse? I know that if I were going to dual-boot with XP, that XP should be installed first - does order matter for 2 linux distros too? Also, are there any points to remember to do during the installation processes so that I end up with a working, dual-boot computer?
