I installed Debian Squeeze-testing weekly build today, with CD1 alone. It took 1 Hour 38 minutes to install and configure on my Pentium 4 2.7 Ghz , 1GB ram HP machine. I have some trouble with the installation. Sometimes the desktop just freezes while moving Icons, or opening Xterm. I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, OR Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys. I have to physically reboot. Why doesn't Ctrl-Alt-Backspace work on GNOME? Is there a IRC chat for Debian Help and what applications does one use on GNOME for IRC chat?

I started the update process in my new Ubuntu Studio install.
My understanding of the update process is:
1) Downloads all of the update files (in my case 214)
2) It performs the necessary installation of these files.
My machine locked up at the 70% done part during step 2.
Now, when I try to boot/load the OS it stalls at the splash screen.
I am not even sure I can get to the recover part from Grub yet, but if I can...
Is there a command that can start the update process without having to download the data again?

After an update firefox doesn't load anymore. Whenever I try to install anything apt-get fails and warns me about broken firefox packages. It is mentioning firefox branding and chrome something (the latter seems to have gone away after I removed firefox via synaptic) apt-get install -f fails also.

My Skype is not running at all. I have recently upgraded my Opensuse to version 11.3 and since the upgrade Skype will not run.
When running the skype from the command line the error message that I receive is "segmentation fault".
I have read another post on the internet that talks about Video drivers.
On the previous 11.2 opensuse that I was running I had the Nvidia Propriety drivers. Now I have the opensource versions.

Just noticed that during calls skype uses ~30-50% cpu, + pulseaudio uses ~20%. I found some old threads on this like [URL] Or [URL]. The former suggests to purge pulse and use alsa/oss instead. The latter suggests changing mic in skype to DeviceXX and tweak the pulse.conf
There's also a launchpad bug on that with status Confirmed->invalid (due to "problem fixed in skype 2.1 beta") but looks like it's not (I am using 2.1 beta)
1. Does any1 has this problem?
2. I can't try 2nd link's approach as my skype has only PulseAudio in the settings, so I can't select Device or anything else!
3. Should I try to remove pulse in favor of ALSA? I'm pretty happy with pulse otherwise that this issue, I use it to record sound out of my sound card and I'm not sure if I can do this with alsa/os.

I am working for Fedora 12 installed on my laptop, and skype has worked. I was able to speak, able to listen and everything (besides some installation problems) was working fine.
Then I allowed Fedora to update(or bugfix or enhacement) some items of my system.
Now when I click on the loudspeaker symbol in the panel and open the mixer I see various tabe for sound input and output. Finally a good idea, and I even have a slide for skype!
But it does not work, I don't hear anything from skype (version 2.1.0.47).
I am able to record and playback via arecord/aplay, so in principal it should work. Any ideas what is wrong? Maybe a bug in a bugfix?
Some more informations for the pros:

I'm trying to get my backup script to run every week, but as a normal user, and not as root as it is done when the script is placed in /etc/cron.weekly. Anacron fits my needs in the sense that it doesn't require my computer to always be on, as opposed to cron, and will just run my script when it can, but at the most each week. Cron fits my needs in the sense that I can run the script as the user I am logged in as. The particular script backs up my home directory with rdiff-backup, and it is very convenient that I am the owner of that backup, since when root performs the backup, I am unable to browse my own backup files and must use "sudo" to do this.
Is there a way to let me use the feature of anacron that allows my computer to not always be on, but still get a weekly execution, and also run the script as a normal (non-root) user?

I have been trying to set up PC up to do automatic backups using a script I developed and anacron. The script runs perfectly when I run it manually in bash, but won't run through anacron. I followed all the advice on CronHowTo etc etc and are at a loss for why this is not happening. Here is my anacron tab (new bits in blue):
SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
# These replace cron's entries
1 5 cron.daily nice run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily
7 10 cron.weekly nice run-parts --report /etc/cron.weekly

I have three raid volumes, md0, md1, and md2. The weekly raid-check cron always causes md0 and md2 to get checked but never md1.
/etc/cron.weekly/99-raid-check
Volumes md0 and md1 are on the same 8 disks. Volume md0 is a small raid1 across all 8 disks for boot and md1 is a raid5 that occupies the rest of those 8 disks. Volume md2 is a raid5 on a separate set of 6 drives. When I check /var/log/messages* I see that every Sunday md0 and md2 get checked but md1 is never checked. However, when I run 99-raid-check manually, all three volumes get checked. There is clearly something different between how crond runs that script and how I run it, but I can't imagine what that would be.

He has asked me to send him a weekly report of this work. I am sys admin guy who understands ssh, telnet, ftp, tftp,TCP I am not able to understand what should I write in report.Because all the servers are perfectly running and applications are also running on top of them and I am done with this.So basically from my part I do not have any ssh or ftp to write in a report like this. Can some one give me a link if there is some sample report that I should send.I am not able to understand what do I need to Google for the same.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

this is at the root of the problems I'm about to describe: Whenever I try to upgrade my Debian installation, I have repeated "size mismatch" errors that necessitate restarting the upgrade process. Since I'm using Debian Squeeze there are lots of upgrades to be done every week. Today, for instance, because I've not upgraded for a few weeks I have to download over 300MB of files to complete the upgrade. However, because of the size mismatch problem this download may well turn into something between 1GB and 2GB, as I repeatedly have to re-download files that were successfully downloaded in the last failed upgrade. What with my ISP limiting me to 7GB per month, I'm finding that merely keeping Debian up to date is using up most of my allotted bandwidth.
I've tried setting the Aptitude preferences not to "remove unused packages automatically", and not to "remove obsolete package files after downloading package lists", but for some reason I still find that files I downloaded in the last failed upgrade have to be downloaded again (and again, ...) whether anyone either knows how to avoid the package size mismatch problem (I can't change my ISP, which has a monopoly on providing internet to my area), or alternatively knows how to set Aptitude not to forget the packages it has downloaded successfully during each failed upgrade, thereby allowing me to avoid such a huge bandwidth usage on my frequent upgrades.

I allowed the UNR on my wife's Asus 1000H netbook to update to 10.04 and even updated since but the GRUB menu screen just keeps reloading itself if I select XP. We still need XP... at least for the time being. We can access the NTFS partitions still.
Now if I download UNR and do a clean install will that fix it?
Should I just remove the HDD and reformat it completely on another computer and reinstall both OSs?
Should I reinstall UNR 9.10? (I've heard there are power consumption problems with 10.04 anyway.)

I installed a load of recommended updates yesterday and shut down my system last night. Tried to start it again this morning and it won't load for me. The wallpaper appears, but no GUI (no top or bottom bars) and no cursor. The only thing I've managed to do is Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the hibernate/shut down/reboot options.

I was told to use this command for an update. It took about an hour. After it was done I restarted and now I can't start my VNC server. -Using a VPS btw. Normally on a fresh boot it uses around 15mb of ram a little less now it's stuck at 2mb - 4mb. When I try to start the VNC it goes to about 9mb which is supposed to go around 350 to 400mb.
