I have just installed ubuntu and need to use visual studio but don't really want to have a dual boot set-up, I know there is something called wine but will it work properly. I was wondering what the best way to go about installing this.

I wouldn't like to reinstall entire OS, or to have to manually update this single program every time. Is there an option to update it from 10.10 repositories, pointing out, that I need only this package (and it's dependencies)? Or is there any PPA that does the trick for me?
Generally, the entire packaging system of Ubuntu rocks, as long as I can find up-to-date PPAs of all packages I need to have in recent versions (like mono).

My Windows installation is in /dev/sda1, and my partition with all my files are in /dev/sda5. I am not sure if that is supposed to be that way, but in the "Drive/Partition Info" section it say sda1 starts at 63, while in the "Boot Info Summary" section it say that sda5 "starts at sector 63" too.
I just downloaded and installed the latest version of Ubuntu on my laptop. After installing the drivers for the visual effects I restarted the computer, and now after the all black screen with the little white Ubuntu symbol in the middle the screen goes blank, lots of horizontal lines appear and it contrasts out to a completely blank, white, useless screen. Any suggestions? EDIT: laptop is a Toshiba 5105, bumped up to 1.2gb of RAM

View 9 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried that? I have a Dell Studio 1555 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 for about 2 years with almost no issues but I plan to upgrade it straight to 11.04 64-bit (using fresh install because I also want to format the HDD and partition it in a different way).
What I'm reading in the web is though a bit discouraging as there seem to be a lot of issues with 11.04 running on this particular Dell model. Quite a shame as Dell is supposed to provide good experience on Linux since they had been selling laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled (or they used to...).
I recently installed ubuntu studio 8.04 on a new partition and now ubuntu 9.10 is no longer showing up in the grub boot menu. How can I boot into ubuntu 9.10 and how do I edit the grub menu so it shows up again?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

I got a Dell Studio 1555 preinstalled with Vista and it already had 3 Primary Partitions. I needed to install Fedora Core 9 on this machine and to organize my HDD(500 GB)
I had two options:
1) Either to create a fourth primary partition
2) Create an extended partition with a number of logical partitions
I chose the option 2. I want to know if i make some free space by deleting one of the logical partitions, can that free space be used for installing Fedora ?
Also how to proceed with the installation?
I'm having problems installing visual python on Fedora 12 (64-bit). Here are the steps I've taken:
- downloaded visual python 5.32
- ran ./configure without problems

I'm having trouble installing visual python, I've downloaded the source package from [URL] as I couldn't find it on yast. On calling ./configure most tests are passed but I get an error which says I need gtkglextmm 1.2 checking in Yast I see this is already installed. Looking in the install.txt it talks about this error and suggests renaming some files, I'm not keen to do this for fear of breaking something else but as it turns out they are already named what they need to be anyway.? Now I'm truly stumped.

I'd like to able to dual boot it with Ubuntu 10.04 and I have a few questions. The hard-drive is 350gb. Would it be possible to dual boot with OSX on two fairly small partitions, say 50gb for each OS. Leaving a remaining partition of around 250gb to keep files on for both OSX and Ubuntu? I've read about this for windows/ubuntu dual boots, but can't seem to find much on OSX/Ubuntu dual boots and whether you can share files easily between them and having common drives for data storage. Also, general tips on dual booting a Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 would be welcome (not a lot out there that I can find).

I am wondering if ubuntu 8.04LTS can be installed on a 2010 Terra A20 ZaReason with Atom processor with wireless n or do I have to wait until Ubuntu 10.04LTS comes out in april? Re-plugging the device after boot gives me dmesg errors:

I can't see any suspicious entries in /var/log/dpkg, but I'm attaching a copy of the recent anyway, along with output for lsusb -vv.
After performing the periodic update on 2010-05-26 including libc, libc6 and libgtk2.0 my system fails on boot with the following error message:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! If I boot from the 10.04 live CD, all partitions on the hard drive are visible, mountable, and pass all file system checks.
Yesterday i was prompted by my update manager to update some packages. I really don't remember which but i updated.
After reboot the box now kernel panics. I don't believe i get a ubuntu splash screen, and at this point i can't figure out how to get to my grub, in case a kernel was upgraded and it's possible to boot to different kernel.
i noticed some words like 'mantis', 'oops' and 'dvb_core' was a part of the text i get on the screen.
Can this be because of a dvb* upgrade that breaks something important ?
If needed, i should be able to boot via liveCD, or i could take a picture of the errors.
I'm getting one of those an 11" MacBook Air with 128gb SSD. 64gb might be too little for dual booting. Of course, I'll run Ubuntu on it. I'm choosing this hardware, because of the great form factor, aesthetics, trackpad, and ability to run OS X (as a UX designer, I want to do competitive analysis of the OS).It will be my first Mac. Any advice? Got tips on what I should start learning, getting used to, etc?

This has self-installed, causing popups attempting to convince the user that there is a security flaw, and that they should upgrade to the advanced version. I have looked this up, and it is definitely a virus. The virus creates a shortcut with a target in the AppData folder named defender.exe. When I went to search for this file, after having set it to show hidden files and folder, I looked in the folder, and found nothing by the name of defender.exe. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to find this file, if it even exists, and then remove the virus all together from the computer. Ideally these solutions will be executable from Windows, as the user is rather afraid of linux.

In all cases, I see the little keyboard and man at the bottom of the screen and then the screen goes black (i.e. my monitor stops receiving input).
My monitor is connect via the HDMI-to-DVI convertor, so is this a driver issue related to that?
