Apr 12, 2011I just did a fresh install of Windows XP Home Edition and then a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10. I can't get Grub2 to find the Windows partition using the prober though. Here is the output of the Boot_Info_Script005 file.

Jul 6, 2010I had Vista loaded on my computer, then loaded the BRILLIANT ubuntu onto a second partition! This gave me the GRUB boot loader which is fine.My 2 points are;1. Can I change the position of the items in the GRUB loader so if no keys are pressed it loads Windows automatically?? (Its for my sons computer!!) Also can I edit the GRUB so its less complicated for him??2.I want to update his Windows to Win 7, free upgrade! This over rights the Win partition and will therefore get rid of my GRUB loader. When I have updated how can I get back the ability to chose between booting Win 7 and Ubuntu?? How do I get the GRUB back?

Feb 4, 2009I thought it would be cool and easy to install Windows 7, ended up being a headache and worthless so far. Now I only have the windows bootloader with vista and windows 7 as options. How can I get grub going again? I have all 6 fedore core 10 cds and a live cd in case those will help, I am using the live cd to play in fedora right now, but I am not sure how to get access to grub.conf and what to change in it, because I am pretty sure I have to add Windows 7 to it.

Jul 24, 2010Having several distros on my computer (including Windows), I prefer BING (BootIt NG) as an overall boot manager. This way, I just install a distro together with GRUB to its dedicated partition, and keep full control over what partitions are available/visible and bootable when family members use the computer.Yesterday, I tried to update Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) and got a problem with the newly available GRUB (1.98-ubuntu7): it said that installing GRUB to a partition was a "BAD" idea, and, luckily, refused to update. I've noticed this behaviour during my last install of Sidux (great distro to keep track of what's happening at the KDE front, by the way). Same problem, same message. Result: no more new Sidux releases...
What's going on? Is this intended behaviour and thus making it impossible for people to manage their booting their own way? Are we talking about a bug here? There seems to be a mentioning of this behaviour on Launchpad, but it's unclear whether it's a bug or not; at least to me.
Fedora :: Get The Graphical Screen Back By Adding Vga=795 To /boot/grub/grub.conf
Nov 21, 2009since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file

However after running these instructions and rebooting my laptop I lost the GUI, and do not know how to get it back.
If it helps the loader screen with the 4 dots has gone slightly skewed, and I've downloaded the most recent update changes.
I can get GUI through recovery mode and running it in failsafex, but I don't think this is a good solution.

Mar 15, 2010I have an Acer Aspire 5810T which came with Windows Vista. I prefer Ubuntu but I need some windows applications so I dual-booted Vista and 9.10.
There was a few minor problems with the Vista side but I didn't use it enough to care. A few weeks ago Vista would not open some programs and others would shut down automaticly and some would open but not connect to the internet like they should. This happened on my previous laptop and when I used the system recovery discs to restore the computer all those issues were gone.
I used the recover discs to restore everything to its original factory settings, it said everything was successful so I restarted. My computer got to the grub menu but when I chose Windows Vista as my operating system it goes black for half a second then returns to the grub menu.
I can get into Ubuntu fine, and I can see the Vista files when I mount the drive to Ubuntu. When I look at the files everything is the way it should be if I had restored it but I can't boot it..

May 6, 2011I am persuaded now (too late) that I need to invest in a robust backup scheme.
I had refit dual-booting snow leopard and ubuntu 10.10.
I tried to upgrade to 11.04 and it got stuck on bootup after the upgrade.
So I went into disk utility and deleted what I thought were all partitions except the mac one. I rebooted, and now I get the grub no partition error.
Did I delete my mac partition? I don't think that I did. How do I boot back into mac os x? Using the option key on bootup no longer shows a mac disk and inserting the mac os x system cd doesn't show any options either.

Aug 9, 2010My laptop is running gentoo linux but I wanted to make my own minimalistic linux distro. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but I need to repartition my hard drive for this. I have the tools to do this (on a cd) but the problem I am encountering is the bios is locked. The bios is locked and it boots from the hard drive first and then the cd-rom drive. I don't have the bios password and the last place I took the laptop to for repair locked the bios, didn't fix the problem, and charged me $60 so they could "look" at it. I fixed the original problem by myself but the bios is still locked and they claim they have no idea how it got locked. Is there any way to make grub "go back" so to speak so that the computer will boot from a cd? I can remove the hard drive and it will boot from the CD but that kinda defeats the purpose.

Sep 2, 2015I'm trying to run 'grub-install /dev/sda', it stays stuck on 'Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub' after leaving it for an hour, nothing happens. I have tried removing all Grub related packages and installing grub-legacy several times, to no avail.
The machine is quite an old one and is an offline sandbox for a friends kid who likes to tinker with older OSes. The hard disk has failed in it so I have donated an old drive to get the machine back up and running for him, as the menu.lst is a lot easier to modify than the newer grub.cfg, he would like the older grub back.
I've done a few searches particular for Debian 8, but the closest I can find is for Ubuntu here, [URL] ....
I have tried to use both the grub rescue disk and the command line listed in the link above.
