After installing Ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with Windows 7(not inside Windows 7) and restarting I come to a blank screen with a blinking underscore.I assume the GRUB boot loader is missing or i installed Grub in some other partitions. Now i unable to enter in to Windows 7 OS.

Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

I have been unable to locate an answer to the below.Just installed 10.10 server and noticed that during boot each time the Grub Menu pops up. I have to manually press a key on my keyboard each time to get through this menu. This is a big problem as this is going to be administered remotely. here is my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file

Now, It seems to me that with the settings above that menu should time out after a few seconds but it is not. I must press enter each time.how I can get this damn thing to timeout after a few seconds?
I need to re install the grub loader on a Acer Netbook. I made a Live CD and tried to follow the directions given in the documentation but I am having no luck. Does anyone know a reasonably straight forward way to re-install GRUB back onto the native Hard Drive.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed.It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?
I am working with a acer netbook that I originally had WinXP installed on. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10, transferred the iso contents to a bootable USB drive and installed Ubuntu. I remember during the setup process that I made sure I chose the option to install on one partition. There is only one partition on my netbook with a small second partition as a swap.
After the installation process and reboot I noticed the grub menu would pop up every boot up giving the list of operating systems of which XP was included. I then ran the update manager and updated 9.10 with all updates. After rebooting the grub menu again showed but the option to choose XP was now gone.
Now everytime I boot up the grub menu shows. How can I modify grub so it will automatically just boot to the OS.
Every time I update my kernel (today with 2.6.32-25-generic), I always have to manually run "sudo update-grub" or ells the new kernel does not show up on reboot??? Is there a config some place to get it back to automatic?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have dual-booted Windows XP and Ubuntu. Because Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't have the required proprietary drivers for my system, I chose Ubuntu 8.04. The installation procedure went well, the drivers are there, everything's perfect but... there's a problem with the GRUB menu that appears just after launching my laptop.
When I first installed Ubuntu it showed Ubuntu (and some letters and numbers), another instance for recovery mode, some memory test lines (I guess there are two of them) and Windows XP.
But after I used the software updater in Ubuntu (to make it up-to-date), the grub bootloader shows two more lines - and those are the same as the first two - Ubuntu (with some letters and symbols) and Ubuntu recovery mode.
Why are those duplicates there? I've never installed another Ubuntu OS on my PC. Because at the moment I have two Ubuntu and two Ubuntu recovery mode lines .
I have a computer that only runs ubuntu and have decided to put fedora on. I put fedora on the computer and made a new partition for it. When I turn the computer on, it logs straight into fedora not even showing me a grub menu. Is there some way that I can update grub so that it knows that ubuntu is also installed
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast week i decided to give the 11.04 alpha 2 a go on my laptop but compiz is currently too unstable for the OS to be of any use so I reinstalled 10.10. In doing this I deleted all partitions and started completely afresh. Strangely since then I have kernel image 2.6.38-1 at the top of my grub menu but if i try to boot it i get either a single blinking cursor or a kernel freeze. I cant find any reason why 2.6.38-1 should be in grub on 10.10.
removing it from the config files as im not used to Grub2 and have been told i cant just directly remove it from /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
I reinstalled Natty yesterday and then installed Fedora on a separate partition.
I now havedouble the menu items in GRUB2 for both of these.
I ran the update grub command in the terminal and it goes smoothly, but the extra menu items still don't go away.
Puzzingly the menu items point to the same partition on the drive as their clone. Both of the Fedora menu items point to sda8

It has been working up till now.The computer was moved when I was gone, and now at start up I get two alarm beeps from the motherboard speaker, no grub menu (hidden line is commented out and time out is gtr than 0).In the past I had to lock the kernel to 2.6.32-28.55.newer kernels broke the interface...although prolly foolioshly, I did allow other system updates.

This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.

When I first boot up. I get the GRUB command line. What happened to the boot menu? And I can boot up into my Windows partition just fine. But when I try the other partitions i get "Unknown file system" or when I try to boot into the other ntfs drive, I get "BOOTMBR missing", but yet it does not mean Windows, because i can boot that just fine. I can't find my Ubuntu partition. How can I get the GRUB boot menu back?

I can tell you I went about fixing it all wrong because I wiped the FC11 partition (intending to install FC13) and now I can't boot anything up. My system consists of: sda1 vista, sdb1 XP, sdb5 extended, sdb6 Fedora. I thought grub was on the fedora partition, but reinstalling fedora with grub on that partition didn't fix the boot up problem. Do I need to replace the windows boot loader on sda1 with grub when installing fedora?

This is an old Toshiba 3110 with Windows 98SE installed which I have successfully customized and do not want to loose. What can I do to get back into W98SE and then re-install Debian properly?
PC: Dell Precision T7400.O/S: Windows XP SP3 64-bit & Scientific Linux 5.3 64-bit
The above PC has 2 HDDs installed one has XP and the other Scientific Linux.
Problem: XP needed to be re-installed, i've done this now but now the GRUB Boot loader doesnt load - So just boots straight into XP.
Qustion: Is there anywhere to fix the GRUB? Without wiping the 2nd HDD and re-installing Linux!

I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

I use Ubuntu on his edition 8.10 and have always been very pleased, until 11:04 last version. Actually used a dual boot for constant use of certain programs that only work on windows. By installing the latest version, everything is as before except that I can not see the initial grub, show me out of range. My boot loader resolution is 640x480 and still I can not see the grub at startup.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust installed ubuntu 11.04 for the first time and it works fine except when i start the computer up the screen goes to the no signal adjust to 1600 x 900 screen. if i wait 30 seconds or so it boots into ubuntu or i can hit the down arrow 4 times and hit enter to load windows so grub must be running but isn't sending out a video signal or at a resolution the monitor can't display so does anyone know how to solve this?
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
