I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]
I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.
I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]
After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:
Wireless Networks
Device not ready
A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:
- Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS
- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". At this step, the installation procedure tell me an error. During this error, in the other console, I've this:

I have MacBook 3,1. I just installed 11.04. When I go to activate the "Broadcom STA wireless driver" I get the message "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log" When I check the log the message is "2011-04-28 18:38:59,896 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted"
I have had 10.04 on this computer in the past and it worked fine, but this is a fresh install of 11.04. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

I've just finished installing lucid and started setting up my tablet and all went well until I tried to install the fpit driver. I tried installing it from synaptic but it says it has to remove ubuntu-desktop, xorg, xserver-core -- some very important things and then says "xserver-xorg-input-fpit: Depends: xserver-xorg-core but it is not going to be installed." I tried downloading the deb and extracting the driver manually but Xorg complains with:
Code:

Problem summary:
Error - "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." and "A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again."
How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..

I tried to install the nvidia driver using yum. I had the nouveau graphic driver installed. I didn't follow any tutorial I just installed the nvidia driver over the installed one. Thinking that yum would take care of everything for me. When I rebooted I get as far as "registering binary handler for windows applications" I can still log on using alt+f2 and mount the file system using chroot but I cannot get any network access. When I use netstat -nr nothing is configured. I can't ping my router or any other computer on the network.I figure I should disable the nouveau driver and try to use the nvidia tutorial by leigh123linux to get the desktoop up again but I need net access to do that.I have no idea how to get that done. I have tried, ifdown/ifup, /etc/init.d/networks restart, service network stop/start/restart, ifconfig eth0.

I recently installed Lenny 5.0.3 i386 onto an old HP XE783 box. I've got a couple of errors that pop up on boot, and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot them. A couple of the lines from /var/dmesg that strike me:weird, boot CPU (#0) not listedby the BIOS. ACPI Error (dsopcode-0595): Field [ALB2] at 120 exceeds Buffer [CRSA] size 104 (bits) [20080321] {along with two other ACPI Errors (psparse-0530): Method parse/execution failed; and (uteval-0233): Method execution failed.}.Error: Driver 'pcspkr' is already registered, aborting.
The most annoying thing (I think) has to do with the ACPI errors: the box won't power down after issuing a shutdown command; it bumps into single user mode then prompts for the root PW.

I just installed Ubuntu on my brand new system that I built. I put in my cd for my HD 5770 video card, and an icon shows up on my screen XFX_VGA_V9.8C text under it.
However when I try to access it in anyway, I try to open with autorun prompt, I get a message "This medium contains software intended to be automatically started. would you like to run it?"
I click on run and get "Error autorunning software, cannot find the autorun program."
Is there anyway that I can run this disk. It's important for setup. I cant copy the disk to the desktop, I get errors.

I am using fedora10 in my notebook. I installed nvidia-graphics driver as follows.
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-*'
Then i installed kmod-nvidia with yum su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia' When i tried to open NVIDIA control panel, i got a message that nvidia-driver should be configured. Then i issued the following command as root.
nvidia-xconfig. The i rebooted the system. Now in the boot menu, i see two kernel informations as follows
Fedora (2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686)
Fedora (2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.PAE)
If i boot my linux with first one, x windows starts, if i boot with the second one (previously default), the x-windows is not opening. Why this happens? So i booted my system with first option in the boot menu. The system booted and x.windows started but i am not able to use any software that uses opengl window. Does anyone know how to install the video driver for a ATI HD5770 video card in 10.04? It was working, some recent update screwed it up, now I cannot reinstall it. What do you have to delete in order to fully get rid of the remnants of the old driver?
What packages have to be installed before or after though Synaptic? Are you supposed to install it by downloading the driver from ATI and SHing it? Or are you supposed to go though System->Hardware Drivers?

System - Xubuntu 8.04.4 but equally valid for other Ubuntu variants.I installed an updated driver for an Intel network card by doing a "make install" from its src directory (copied from install CD). That appears to have successfully created a file named "e1000.ko" and placed it in a subdirectory named "e1000" in the appropriate /lib/modules/.../drivers/net directory. Based on the contents of the Makefile the "make" also invoked "depmod -a". The "make" doesn't appear to have done anything else interesting.
However, on reboot this new module is not the one being loaded (based off of strings in the dmesg log file), instead the original as distributed with Xubuntu is.Obviously, I have to do more than the installation instructions on Intel's CD say to do.What steps do I still need to do to get this new driver recognized in place of the original?(it is no huge deal if the only answer I get is an honest "Don't bother" since the driver that came with Xubuntu appears to work "fine", however the Intel driver is a full Version number higher so I'd expect it to be somewhat "better" by some measure)
