Fedora :: Error Xserver Running During Nvidia Driver Install
Feb 17, 2011
After starting the Nvidia driver installer I get the error message "please exit x before installing". I read the manual page for X. From the console I typed X -terminate. I get the error message "Fatal server error" "Server is already active for display 0". how to exit from X.

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 I have a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW Monitor and I needed a graphic accelerator to run my science software and to view full screen videos. so I installed the NVIDIA 96.43.19 Driver as recomanded by unbuntu. Well the server installs OK but doesn't completely communicate with my monitor, I'm using GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/SSE2 Graphic card. I'm unable to set the correct Resolution which is 1680X1050, the driver only list 1280X1024 and doesn't list the correct one. Also the driver Crashes when I try to set the CPU scaling, it's locked on stretch mode. Also when ubuntu loads X it doesn't accept the Xserver settings I have entered in the driver Set Up.The additional driver screen also says the Driver is active but not in use. I sent a bug report to NVIDIA but they never answered me back.

xserver-common (2:1.10.4-1) was upgrade today in Sid to xserver-common (2:1.11.0-1) breaking my nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run). There is a temporary fix as showen below.
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "IgnoreABI" "true"
EndSection
Some problems do exist and downgrading may be a better option.
I need to look at bugreports at nividia but not sure how. LOL guess it's time to google.

After a disk crash I reinstalled openSuSE 11.2 and as always downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for my geforce 8200 graphics.
Unlike all previous cases, this time the driver does not install. The contents of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log are below. The error refers to being unable to to locate version.h

Problem summary:
Error - "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." and "A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again."
How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..

I installed kmod-nvidia-96xx-2.6.27.9-73.fc9.i686-96.43.09-1.fc9.6.i686 yesterday. After rebooting, the X server started correctly, but at the welcome login screen, my screen goes black for a bit whenever anything on the display changes. After logging in, the problem remains, plus my text is somewhat garbled. There are no error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The only error messages I could find were in /var/log/messages:
kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000000
kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, ...

I am using fedora10 in my notebook. I installed nvidia-graphics driver as follows.
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-*'
Then i installed kmod-nvidia with yum su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia' When i tried to open NVIDIA control panel, i got a message that nvidia-driver should be configured. Then i issued the following command as root.
nvidia-xconfig. The i rebooted the system. Now in the boot menu, i see two kernel informations as follows
Fedora (2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686)
Fedora (2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.PAE)
If i boot my linux with first one, x windows starts, if i boot with the second one (previously default), the x-windows is not opening. Why this happens? So i booted my system with first option in the boot menu. The system booted and x.windows started but i am not able to use any software that uses opengl window. The glxinfo command gives me the following error.

I'm somewhat new to Fedora but not Linux in general. I went to install the nvidia driver as per any instructions I found on the internet that yielded results. I typed sudo yum install kmod-nvidia and eventually got a driver, blacklisted nouveau, restarted, and finally got compiz and all my desktop effects.
The problem was when I played Minecraft, which for those who don't know is a game, from a .jar file. After ~5 minutes of playing something happens and everything freezes. Video completely stops but I still have mouse control and sound(at least for anything already running). Clicking stuff does nothing and no hotkeys work to bring up anything at all. I end up having to do a reset by hand to get anything done. Turning off desktop effects didn't help.
Why is this? Did I install the wrong driver, even though kmod-nvidia should find the right one on it's own? nvidia 8800 GT is my card. Could it be the java program screwing things up royally? I can't remember if the program worked fine on it's own before the driver install, but uninstalling the driver now causes the game to fail on launch, which I guess makes sense but can't figure out if it's simply the lack of driver or if removing the driver screwed something else up. I might just reinstall fedora and start from scratch again, but before I did that I wanted to find out if I'm just installing the wrong driver and can simply find teh right one to fix all of this.

for more than 5 months i've been trying to install my nvidia G105M driver on fedora 11 without any results but the famous 6 little screens.
i've even megrated to ubuntu cause the've overrided this problem with modifying the xorg file...and it worked like a charm also with opensuse
now when i tried to use this same method with fedora 12 (which i've been waiting for for about a year..as i hated fedora 11) i can't even see the 6 screens...no GUI..
i don't really like ubuntu that much...actually i prefer fedora over any other distro..

Running 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.i686 and just purchased a AGP 7600GT 512 video card. Searched around and found:I did the rpm, yum, sed, mv & dracut as directed. Then I rebooted. When it starts up (all the normal bios messages) and then I 1/2" bar across the bottom of the screen with Fedora 13 on the right end and .... nothing. Just sits there. I've used my Live-13 disk and tried to reverse the procedure but I'm starting to think it's the video drivers.

I installed the Nvidia driver. When I click on the "Monitors" package it then asks if I want to use my graphics drivers vendor's tool. I say yes and then it pops up the Nvidia X Server Settings dialog. In that menu it indicates I need to run nvidia-xconfig from root. I did this and then restarted the xserver but to no avail I get the same message every time I try to run "Monitors", that I need to run nvidia-xconfig.

I've enjoyed accelerated 3d graphics for years with this laptop, but since moving from CentOS 5.3 to FC12 I have had no 3d or opengl working at all.My install seems good. I'm running right now with the 'nvidia' driver in 1920x1200 res with no real problems except the lack of 3d. I have just finished trawling the forums again, coming back to: F12,F11 & F10 Nvidia driver guides [URL] I uninstalled all my nvidia packages, re-installed only "kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686" and dependencies, ensured 'nvidia' was my selected driver in xorg.conf (using nvidia-config-display disable, then enable), and rebooted, and still no joy. No errors in Xorg.0.log. My 'glx' extension is loaded. 'nouveau' is rdblacklisted. SELinux is disabled. I have 3Gb RAM and so have chosen not to use the PAE kernel or modules.
Code:
[neek@uberneek ~]$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

I have the nvidia 121.21 file for XP and Win2K. I have the driver running on this box on a dual boot win2k install. works fine. The same file on my guest win2k VirtualBox install says no driver available for my current hardware setup. My video card has the 8400 GS chip set. It is currently running 3D on This Fedora 12 install. Is the problem the VirtualBox will not allow the 3D driver to be installed. The installation had a comment about no 3D when it started. I also have not been able to get control of a USB port Device I need. There any way to have Virtual and 3D video drivers with a USB port?

I have a Nvidia 275GTX and I installed the nvidia drivers via RPM fusion and blacklisted Nouveau as instructed by a guide online that I see matches the one on these forums. When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?

I've been trying to figure out the cause of system hangs with slack 13 for a a week or so. I get random total freezes with the keyboard LED's blinking at me and the only solution is to do a hard-reset. I was using a self-compiled 2.6.31.6 kernel on 32bit Slack with similar results, but thought it had more to do with several bad starts as I got used to Slack's way of doing things... eventually I decided I'd made enough bad starts with that installation and after reading a bit about _current fixing some stability issues added another installation to my machine using Slackware64 and upgrading to _current. It worked great, then I installed the NVIDIA proprietary driver. The system hangs are back.
Sometimes they happen quickly, sometimes they take hours, sometimes while I'm working, sometimes when the machine has been idle for hours. For a couple of days I've been going back and forth between the NVIDIA propreitary and the nv driver. I've run memtest86 for 4.5 hours and not a single error, I'm running this on a new HD, I even upgraded the case fan (the old one was starting to complain!).
I've also installed different versions of the driver 185.x.x, 190.42.x. I've used slackbuilds, I've used "sh NVIDA.xxx.RUN" I've said "yes" to everything the installer asked, I've said "no".
So far no hangs with the nv driver. I've been leaving one or the other running at all times and no hangs with the nv driver, but within hours with the proprietary driver.
All that is to say I'm confident the issue is with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, OR something in my kernel options that only shows up when I'm using the NVIDIA driver.
Is anyone else running this successfully?
SLACKWARE64 kernel 2.6.32 (same behavior on 32bit with 2.6.31.6) compiled kernel with "make oldconfig" then "make localmodconfig" BEFORE the NVIDIA driver was installed. ext3 filesystem (same behavior with ext4 on previous installation)
