Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Won't Fully Shut Down After Kernel Update ?

Feb 14, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 on my dual boot HP laptop won't shut down completely (my screen goes blank but the laptop doesn't power off just hangs with no screen display showing anything). I never had this problem before. It appeared after the 2.6.31-19 update.

After I push the power/reboot button and then restart the laptop, I am able to shut down.

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Fully Shutdown After Kernel Update?

Apr 20, 2010

just ran the obligatory kernel update for Karmic 9.10 and now my computer doesn't shut down when prompted to do so. It tries...goes through the logoff, makes all the motions and then hangs at the very end.

Reinstalled Ubuntu...same thing after kernel update.

Fedora :: Kernel 2.6.35.12-90.fc14 - Update Not Fully Installing PAE?

May 1, 2011

It appears that the update process on or about 2011.04.28 downloaded and installed a non PAE kernel (kernel-2.6.35.12-90.fc14) on my box. Until this update, it has been installing PAE designated kernels. When this update occurred, it downloaded the PAE headers and debug, devel and debug-devel PAE components. Has anyone else noticed this in their update?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid 10.04 Will Not Update Fully

May 13, 2010

When I click on "update" after running a series of updates, I get an error message that says:
"Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
Yet if I go the address in Firefox, one step at a time from [URL] and continue one step at a time, there is indeed a Packages.gz that I can download, so what is wrong? I do not see that repository listed in sources.list or in the update manager.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Update On 9.04 To Kernel 2.6.28.18 No Nvidia?

Feb 5, 2010

9.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.

So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.

Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.

Software :: X Will Not Fully Start After Kernel Rebuild?

Sep 16, 2010

I rebuilt my kernel with dynamic ticks, high resolution timer support, and hugepagetlb and hugepagetlbfs support. Now X does not load. If I start it as root, xclock shows up and then the screen goes black and I can't do anything. Normally xclock and three xterms show up. If I start it under my normal account, I get a black screen with nothing but a cursor, which moves and has the "busy" pointer. It is not configuration because I booted an old kernel and am using X under that right now.I also set CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME to no. My monitor uses DPMS so maybe that may have done it.

Debian :: Unplug USB Drive - Kernel Failure - System Will Not Shut Down

Jul 13, 2011

I have a flash drive that I regularly use on my laptop. If I unplug the flash drive without first unmounting it, I get a popup notification of a kernel failure (with diagnostics sent to kerneloops.org). Then, if I attempt to shut down the system via the console, it hangs on "The system is going down for halt/reboot NOW!" and doesn't actually shut down. Using Gnome's graphical System > Shut Down feature just logs me out and sends me to the login screen; the shutdown feature from there does nothing. I have to disconnect the power cord on the laptop in order to shut it down, and I don't like doing this.

System: 32-bit Debian Squeeze stable with kernel version 2.6.32-5-686, running Gnome 2.30.2, on an Acer Aspire 5570z.

I use Keepassx to store my passwords and keep the keyfile for my password database on the flash drive in question. I mention this just in case it helps determine what's causing the failure.

dmesg has quite a bit to say about this:

General :: Unable To Properly Shut Down After Bios Update

Sep 6, 2010

I have a bit of a weird problem, I have updated the BIOS for my motherboard (MSI K9A2 Platinum V2) to version 1.B which updates the CPU AGESA code. After the update I was unable to properly shut down linux (gentoo linux 64 bit, kernel 2.6.34, kde 4.4), when I try to do a shut down (tried it from kde and from the command line as well with the same result) the computer shuts down but then it starts up again, only this time the keyboard doesn't work. I think that somehow, the way the pc shuts down has changed (maybe linux is sending the wrong commands in order to shut down) because from windows 7 I can shut down the pc properly.
I have tried to recompile the kernel (I thought that maybe I forgot to add support for some ACPI, APM or CPU options that could affect the shut down procedure) but with no luck.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Update Breaks Installation?

It seems that updating the Kernel breaks my installation. I've tried it twice, and both times it disabled my gui desktop. I'm posting this with links2 in my terminal. The terminal works perfectly.

This is really annoying, as I can't even use my computer. What do you think is the problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Crash During 2.6.31-20 Kernel Update

Mar 8, 2010

Running Karmic on my laptop, I get very occasional kernel panics (suspect it has something to do with the Broadcom WiFi because it only seems to happen with heavy network traffic or HDD access), but just my lucky, this time it Panic'd on me during my recent update -> linux-kernel 2.6.31-20. My system still 'works', but I get the following when doing any other updates, now:

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for tango:
Setting up linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic (2.6.31-20.57) ...
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute installed post-installation script: Exec format error

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic:
linux-image-generic depends on linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic; however:

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-generic:

Now I cannot seem to get rid of that, and of course, I am stuck in the prior version. Granted everything 'works' - but it bothers me. What's the best way to go about tracking down and hashing out a problem like this?

Ubuntu Installation :: X Windows After Kernel Update

Feb 2, 2011

When trying to clean up old kernels I accidentally deleted the current kernel (2.6.35-24). I then had problems when I reinstalled and found that I could only boot into command line mode. I was able to fix this problem but have since installed the latest kernel release (2.6.35-25) and now have the same problem as before. Of course, I could do what I did before but I guess this is going to occur whenever I upgrade in future.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Update Not Available For Kernel 2.6.38

May 15, 2011

After upgrading Maverick (perfect!) to Natty, I was unable to boot into anything. (kernel 2.6.38). However, through much PITA, I was able to boot into an older kernel. (2.6.35). I completely removed 2.6.38, rebooted, reinstalled it and ran update-grub. However, 2.6.38 is no longer available no matter how many times I run update-grub, and the only option left is 2.6.35. In my humble opinion, the Natty upgrade experience is rubbish. (blank screen, total PC hangs, boots into a blank screen with only a blinking cursor, NVIDIA official driver not working, bootable only into older kernels etc.)

After updating the kernel in Wubi installs, GRUB gets messed up. This has caused me to hold off on the HUGE list of updates in my update manager (I have never updated since I first installed 10.04, and this was just over a week ago). Are these updates important enough to potentially risk something bad happening? What is the risk of updating? Is this an issue with all Wubi installs?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Update Header, Kernel First?

Oct 29, 2010

After getting everything running nicely on 10.10 (after dozens of installs - long story, partially raid problem, partially noob, partially partitioning and Windows), I'm stuck with an unbootable 10.10.I selected all the "important security updates" when the update manager told me I needed to update everything. Upon rebooting, and picking ubuntu in grub, I get:

Error: unknown command 'record fail'Error: cannot read the Linux header Error: you need to load the kernel first Not exactly sure why at this point. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I can probably get in either through a 10.04 version that I have on another HDD, or through the livecd.

Note: if it's important, I did not elect to install the ATI proprietary drivers, and this is also the first update that I've done after installing medibuntu - a few boot cycles in between, so I don't think it's related.

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Update Error - Forced To Shut Down Via Terminal

May 3, 2015

I have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. Here is a YouTube video I have made to explain my problem.

I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update - Grub Won't Boot Says Kernel Missing

Jan 9, 2010

I used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.

I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
