just ran the obligatory kernel update for Karmic 9.10 and now my computer doesn't shut down when prompted to do so. It tries...goes through the logoff, makes all the motions and then hangs at the very end.
Reinstalled Ubuntu...same thing after kernel update.
I just updated to kernel 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.x86_64, and I'm now having a weird issue where my computer will hang during startup and shutdown unless I move the mouse around.
While moving the mouse, it will boot up or shut down normally. Once i stop moving the mouse around it will hang (until I begin to move the mouse again).Once fully booted it acts fine..
Ubuntu 9.10 on my dual boot HP laptop won't shut down completely (my screen goes blank but the laptop doesn't power off just hangs with no screen display showing anything). I never had this problem before. It appeared after the 2.6.31-19 update.
After I push the power/reboot button and then restart the laptop, I am able to shut down.
It appears that the update process on or about 2011.04.28 downloaded and installed a non PAE kernel (kernel-2.6.35.12-90.fc14) on my box. Until this update, it has been installing PAE designated kernels. When this update occurred, it downloaded the PAE headers and debug, devel and debug-devel PAE components. Has anyone else noticed this in their update?

Used to boot to kenrel 2.6.31.6 for the past 2 months updating my system whenever i was asked to-NO PROBLEMS so far(till yesterday in fact)Mandriva yesterday, offered a list of system updates including the kernel 2.6.31.12 and the respective Nvidia drivers.Boot to that kernel computer reacted as usual and everything seemed to run properly. HOWEVER,when i tried to shutdown the system everything powered off(hdd-keyboard) except the CPU(and the power supplier).I restart(manually) the system boot in and try to reboot it-NO Problem-logout NO Problem but FAILED TO SHUTDOWN PROPERLY AGAIN.
A while ago, I was applying the new kernel updates (I guess 2.6.32-24, or the one after it.. well, the latest generic update) and accidentally powered off my laptop. And now it wont come up. It comes to the logon page, and neither the keyboard, nor the mouse work. Cant even switch to the TTYs. When I boot with the recovery mode, I just see a black screen (probably the TTYs dont work) but after "processing" some time, nothing happens. Not sure if the keyboard works, as I cannot turn on/off the capslock switch, but ctrl+alt+del works
View 3 Replies View RelatedI finally got Ubuntu to run on my laptop. However, I can only get it to run in safe mode. When I turn it on, it goes to the login screen. I select my username, type in my password and press login. Then it either goes back to the login screen after thinking for a while or just gives me the background image. If I select to login in safe mode, I can get to the desktop and everything works fine from there, although in safe mode.Then, when I try to shutdown, it closes everything up and goes black, but doesnt actually turn off. The Caps Lock light blinks.

Have never been able to get the system to shutdown or fully poweroff using the installed OS. If I use the Knoppix live CD - no problem. System boots up fine and shuts down and powers off correctly. With the installed OS, it originally crashed on shutdown and had to power off using the power button. After trying many things, the OS shuts down, powers off the fans etc, but the keyboard is still lit. I cannot restart the system without turning off power at the power supply. Starting my computer by turning off the power supply switch, waiting
10-12 seconds, turning on the power supply switch and then hitting the power button gets to be very annoying after a few weeks.
Installed KDE and switched to that to see what difference it might make. System does not shutdown, but reboots instead. Switched back to Gnome. Have tried sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now and poweroff. Identical behaviour. System is completely up-to-date. BIOS, kernel, video drivers.
Recently I installed vncserver (tigervnc) on my desktop. Ever since my computer refuses to shutdown normally. When I click on "update" after running a series of updates, I get an error message that says:
"Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
Yet if I go the address in Firefox, one step at a time from [URL] and continue one step at a time, there is indeed a Packages.gz that I can download, so what is wrong? I do not see that repository listed in sources.list or in the update manager.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI rebuilt my kernel with dynamic ticks, high resolution timer support, and hugepagetlb and hugepagetlbfs support. Now X does not load. If I start it as root, xclock shows up and then the screen goes black and I can't do anything. Normally xclock and three xterms show up. If I start it under my normal account, I get a black screen with nothing but a cursor, which moves and has the "busy" pointer. It is not configuration because I booted an old kernel and am using X under that right now.I also set CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME to no. My monitor uses DPMS so maybe that may have done it.

I then have to disconnect tower from the power source and plug it in after waiting a few minutes. This problem first started in Ubuntu 9.10. I have a hunch that it happens because I am shutting down with applications open.
I was told that this is a batter issue on my motherboard, but I've replaced it and still have issues.
My ubuntu won't shut down, it stops at the ubuntu logo (with the dots under it). It seems like the OS completely and successfully shuts down, also the harddrive spins down too, except for the computer. I belive this might have happened after I updated my bios. (due to hybrid gpu trouble)I did search on the internet, and found that it might be some ACPI related issues, and that I have to edit the grub's menu.lst file and add acpi=force.However my menu.lst file is blank, there is nothing in there.
I have tried to shutdown via the terminal too, but the same happens there. Last time I checked it successfully reboots, and standby works correctly. For me to shutdown this laptop, I have to remove the battery and the power cord for it to shutdown, or hold the power button for 10 secs, which is really annoing

However, there is one issue: when i go to restart or shutdown the computer, the graphical interface goes away like it should, it goes to CLI and does it's shutdown routine....the problem occurs about 2 seconds into the routine, when it just stops. it doesnt shutdown or restart, but stays in the CLI with a blinking cursor. if i allow it to set for a couple of minutes, a message pops up that says something like this, "BUG: soft lock up CPU0 CPU1 stuck, blah blah". any ideas on what this is or what is causing this? the laptop has the i5 processor in it, just in case that matters

This computer is dual-booted with Win 7, and the shutdown command there properly halts the system.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis isn't stricly an Ubuntu question, but it is in the cause of an Ubuntu-powered home server Essentially: does wake-on-lan work if the computer is Shut Down (ie to all intents and purposes 'off' except for the hardware switch on the back), assuming that the motherboard and network interface (which in my case are one and the same) support wake-on-lan?
Also, if wake-on-lan is turned on, will this mean power going to anything other than the network interface (e.g. will PSU, CPU, case fans still be on?)Finally, will all of this work on Ubuntu 10.10 (assuming that the computer components are compatible)?
EDIT: Just to be clear, the Ubuntu system will be receiving the wake-on-lan 'call' (from a Squeezebox, though from my very limited knowledge of this stuff I don't think the source matters)
My laptop randomly shuts off, at first I thought it was an issue with the laptop overheating but during the install of 11.04 I made sure the laptop had a fan blowing on it constantly and checked it and determined it couldn't have overheated. My problem now is that I was able to use a live cd to access my old files but was presented with only two files stating that my files were encrypted, I'm don't ever recall encrypting my files and so I'm without a passphrase.
What I'm wondering, is there a way to gain access without the passphrase? Or is there a way to fix the corrupt install?
I used to like having that Red Shutdown Button on the top panel in the far right corner next to my name on older Ubuntu versions. It was easy to add with the 'Add to Panel' right-click feature that Unity eliminated. Is there a way to put that Red Shutdown button back on the far right top? IMHO it works better than the present Unity shutdown button.

I am working with distro one and a half year now (of course I was doing updates all this period) The last twenty dates if I have a quite heavy session I can not log off (or shutdown the computer) I even tried from konsole qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0
even that did not work (well right now I can not launch any new apps from kde, but I still work with the already running).
I have an 80GB HDD where I installed Windows XP first and then Ubuntu. The thing is that whenever I shut down my computer and then turn it back on (wether it's right away or a few hours later, or the next day), I get the GRUB screen where you have to choose Ubuntu, but after that just a completely black screen. I then have to force a shutdown, then turn it back on, and it works. Whenever I restart it works too, this seems to happen only after a shutdown.

This usually happens when your computer does not shutdown correctly, shutdown without unmounting/removing usb. Please run the chkdsk /r" I already ran that many times nothing happens. I have Windows XP Pro 32bit.
