Fedora :: Kernel 2.6.35.12-90.fc14 - Update Not Fully Installing PAE?

May 1, 2011

It appears that the update process on or about 2011.04.28 downloaded and installed a non PAE kernel (kernel-2.6.35.12-90.fc14) on my box. Until this update, it has been installing PAE designated kernels. When this update occurred, it downloaded the PAE headers and debug, devel and debug-devel PAE components. Has anyone else noticed this in their update?

Fedora Installation :: Fc14 Hangs After Kernel Update / Solution For This?

Aug 8, 2011

I am unable to boot with kernel 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.x86_64 which was installed while applying software updates. It hangs with the last message issued "Registering binary handler for Windows Applications". Searching led to it being related to a problem with the nvidia drivers. I followed the directions in several posts - delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf, reboot, run nvidia-xconfig, reboot and all is fine, but not in my case. The first reboot works but the screen is wrong. There is a 1 inch wide black border around the presentation window. If I then do the nvidia-xconfig and reboot, i am back to where I was before - boot hangs after issuing "Registering...". If I boot to the last good kernel, everything works fine. This happened to me once before and I was able to fix it by rebuilding the nvidia kernel (I think that was what I had to do), but I can't find out how to do that. I have akmod and kmod installed which are supposed to take care of this problem. I booted to kernel 13-92 recovery mode, deleted the xorg.conf file and ran nvidia-xconfig from there. Still fails. I don't know what to list here, but I will do my best to supply whatever is necessary.

Fedora Installation :: FC14 Won't Fully Install / Make It Possible?

Dec 24, 2010

New 320 Gig HD. Installed FC14 from DVD and it worked, except there are no icons at all to get started as there were in FC 13. Cant find "Places", "Applications" that were at the top of the screen. Now it's blank except for the splash design. Tried to re-install, but it won't do that. Just goes to the HD and the same blank splash screen. Thanks for the help. Please be easy with explanations as I'm new at this.

I tried yum clean all and both pointing to the baseurl and mirrorlist and it does the same thing for both. Oddly my other laptop with F14 in the wireless cafe showed all three packages were available.

Fedora :: NVidia Driver For New Kernel 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64?

Apr 12, 2011

I just responded to a (packagekit?) prompt to update packages, which included new kernel 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64. I use nVidia on my notebook and usually the new driver is installed automatically. This time, the computer would not boot to the stage that the nVidia logo appears, indicating the driver is not present. I edited grub.conf to take me back a version and I am now running under the previous kernel 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64. I tried a yum search for kmod-nvidia-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 and nothing was found. I have enabled these repos:

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade The Kernel To FC14 And That Has Toasted?

Fedora Installation :: Yum Update For FC15 After Upgrade From FC14

May 27, 2011

After doing an upgrade from FC14 to FC15, I then updated the packages by doing:
yum update yum
yum clean all
yum --releasever=15 --disableplugin=presto distro-sync
I then get the following voluminous list of issues (148 pre-existing rpmdb problems). I've done an rpm --rebuilddb but no help.

Running rpm_check_debug
ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve:
libclutter-gtk-0.10.so.0()(64bit) is needed by gthumb-2.12.3-2.fc15.x86_64
Please report this error in [URL]

Found 148 pre-existing rpmdb problem(s), 'yum check' output follows:
ImageMagick-c++-6.6.4.1-15.fc14.x86_64 has missing requires of ImageMagick = ('0', '6.6.4.1', '15.fc14')
akonadi-1.5.3-1.fc14.x86_64 has missing requires of libboost_program_options-mt.so.1.44.0()(64bit)
alchemist-1.0.37-8.fc12.x86_64 has missing requires of python(abi) = ('0', '2.6', None) .....
Your transaction was saved, rerun it with: yum load-transaction /tmp/yum_save_tx-2011-05-27-10-30qO4br9.yumtx

Well, it appears that downloading and installing libclutter-gtk-0.10.so.0 seemed to fix all the subsequent yum error messages, and I was able to install all the packages.

Software :: X Will Not Fully Start After Kernel Rebuild?

Sep 16, 2010

I rebuilt my kernel with dynamic ticks, high resolution timer support, and hugepagetlb and hugepagetlbfs support. Now X does not load. If I start it as root, xclock shows up and then the screen goes black and I can't do anything. Normally xclock and three xterms show up. If I start it under my normal account, I get a black screen with nothing but a cursor, which moves and has the "busy" pointer. It is not configuration because I booted an old kernel and am using X under that right now.I also set CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME to no. My monitor uses DPMS so maybe that may have done it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Broken After Kernel Update / "System InstallArchive() Error" When Installing?

Jan 30, 2011

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.

Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.

I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:
NvidiaDriverSwitching

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.

jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.

I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:

Code:

Fedora :: Yum Update All Except Kernel?

Nov 2, 2010

I'm using F13 and I would like to update my computer using yum update.

I did this a few weeks ago and yum update downloaded and installed

Quote:

kernel i686 2.6.34.7-61.fc13

After a reboot I got

Quote:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

To get around this I did a ctrl + s and booted to an earlier kernel. Once in I deleted the latest kernel using

Quote:

rpm -q kernel

to list the available kernels and

Quote:

rpm -e kernel-version

to delete the latest kernel. Once deleted my computer starts up perfectly.

How do I run yum update without reinstalling the bad kernel?

Fedora :: Can't Update To A New Kernel

Apr 30, 2011

I do not understand this problem. I am using kernel 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686.PAE and while that works fine I know new kernels makes things work better. As such, every time a kernel update comes along just like all other updates, I perform a yum update. But for some unknown reason, I am successfully updating everything except the kernel.

I have attempted updates with 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686.PAE, 88, and 12-90 and at the very beginning of the boot I always get the same panic error and boot freeze. The message is ALWAYS as foolow. The only part of the message that changes is the kernel numbers.

[I did my best at hand writing the error message.]

I hope this makes sense to someone.

MESSAGE:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/init" , line 157 , in <modules>
if _name_ == ' _main_ ' : main()

[Code]....

Does any of the above make any sense?? I cannot even figure how I am supposed to fix anything since the computer completely freezes at that point! I am, of course, able to hard reboot. The I switch back to the previous kernel and everything is fine but why does everything EXCEPT the kernel update?

Fedora :: Nvidea, X11 And Last Kernel Update

Jun 20, 2010

I'm using F13 64bit with the proprietary nvidea driver. From yesterday's software update, a new kernel was installed:

old kernel: vmlinuz-2.6.33.5-112.fc13.x86_64
old initramfs: initramfs-2.6.33.5-112.fc13.x86_64.img
new kernel: vmlinuz-2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64
new initramfs: initramfs-2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64.img

I load grub from another distro partition. After the update, I changed the two lines in menu.lst, as per the above mentioned, to match the new kernel.

The problem now is that after booting F13, my monitor displays a warning saying "video mode not supported".

These two files are now at /etc/x11:

xorg.conf.livna-config-backup:

# Xorg configuration created by livna-config-display
Section "Files"
ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
EndSection

[Code].....

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same issue as mine. In case it is, it looks like that all I have to do is:

1 - boot from the previous kernel, and

2 - code: "yum install akmod-nvidia"
