General :: Unable To Properly Shut Down After Bios Update

I have a bit of a weird problem, I have updated the BIOS for my motherboard (MSI K9A2 Platinum V2) to version 1.B which updates the CPU AGESA code. After the update I was unable to properly shut down linux (gentoo linux 64 bit, kernel 2.6.34, kde 4.4), when I try to do a shut down (tried it from kde and from the command line as well with the same result) the computer shuts down but then it starts up again, only this time the keyboard doesn't work. I think that somehow, the way the pc shuts down has changed (maybe linux is sending the wrong commands in order to shut down) because from windows 7 I can shut down the pc properly.
I have tried to recompile the kernel (I thought that maybe I forgot to add support for some ACPI, APM or CPU options that could affect the shut down procedure) but with no luck.

I just wounder why a ntfs partition need that my window xp shut down properly before i can mount it on my new Debian install.What happen it that when scanning window xp for virus i got a blue screen and window just crash repeatedly , so i tough i could just mount that partition with ntfs-3g, find the virus witch i identify to be in c:/window and delete it, but my ntfs partition would not mount and the boot message said something like (ntfs partition is still in use). Long story short, i finally managed to get a full window xp boot followed by a clean shut down, then my ntfs partition mounted and i was able to delete that virus.I could mount that partition with ntfs ro option in fstab, but not with ntfs-3g rw until i got a clean xp shutdown.

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
By using yum update --skip-broken i am able to update only some applications

I have no idea why I can not shut down my system properly. Every time I try to shut down, it just hangs and the only thing what I can see is my wallpaper. Then I am forced to do hard shut down, holding shut down button for a few seconds. Can someone help me with this? I have to mention that month ago everything was fine. No major system changes where done till that. My F11 is all up to date. Laptop: Acer Aspire One 751H.

Many times it happens that when i shut down ubuntu 10.04 at that time it keeps on showing that screen which displays "Ubuntu" written & below it 5 dots. I waited for 15 minutes than also it keeps on showing that.I have to use hardware restart button in such case.What should i do?

If I log out or shut down Ubuntu with Transmission still open, the next time I start Transmission it will verify the local data, which take a very long time because I have lots of torrents. Does anyone knows how I can prevent this without having to explicitly close Transmission every time?
If I explicitly close Transmission before shutting down Ubuntu, it works fine.
I'm using Ubuntu and 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and Transmission 1.75

So I've got a backup server that has a daily cronjob to back up all my systems. My desktop PC is usually in sleep mode to save power. So my backup server has to wake up the desktop via wake-on-LAN to start the backup job. When the backup script is done, my backup server sends a shutdown command to the desktop to put it back in sleep mode.
The trouble is that SSH is timing out during the shutdown process and waits a ridiculous amount of time before giving up and allowing my backup server to move on to the next backup script. Here's the portion of my backup script for the desktop that does the shutdown stuff:

Normally the entire backup job will only take about 5 minutes. But because of SSH timing out, it takes 164 minutes!
As a matter of detail, my backup server is running Ubuntu 9.10, and the desktop is Windows 7 x64 with Cygwin. The -p option for the shutdown command in Cygwin is for sleep mode.

Whenever I close Banshee by clicking the 'x' in the upper left-hand corner; the player moves to the next track and keeps on playing, just without a GUI. I had this problem in Rhythmbox as well. I'm also having the same problem with Software Center.It certainly looks like the UI/Window Manager is not always sending the application 'kill' signal to the running process. I'm currently using Gnome 2.x / Ubuntu Classic. I haven't tried this in Unity yet; but I suspect I will have the same problems there as well.

I dual booted my system with Linux Mint on a Windows 7 operating platform. I later thought it would be better to use Ubunta as I am a newbie to the system and there is more help available. I tried to uninstall Linux Mint through Windows but I am not sure I did. I then installed Ubunta from a CD and the whole system crashed. I am now unable to boot beyond the BIOS screen and am using Ubunta CD to access the internet. I would be grateful if you could shed any light on what has happened. Unfortunately I have no separate boot up disc.

I need to install a bios update to fix my PC after I upgraded the CPU. BIOS update should fix it.
But...This seems to be way harder than it should be. I'd be great if motherboard manufacturers could provide bootable iso images with all the tools to do the job without us having the build these ourselves...
Anyway, how do I go about creating a freedos bootable CDR under Kubuntu that is BIGGER than 1.44 MB!
My image file is 1MB already. The flashing program 32KB. I tried the methods from the various forums and just couldn't get them to work. Either ran out of space, or all the links to fdos were broken.
By the way, [url] doesn't seem to be right anymore and thats where everyone is pointing. I would probably have had this sorted if I could have the 2.88 MB image, but all I can find is a 1.44MB image and I have now idea how you can grow that to a bigger one. Why be stuck with 1.44MB? are we still in the 1990's ?

(Using Archlinux) I downloaded Ruby 1.8.7-174 a while ago and installed it via the tarball (not pacman). I was trying to update to 1.8.7-299, but I can't get it to work. Per the readme, I do the following steps, all of which complete without error:
./configure
make
make install
After install finishes however, I still have -174 installed instead of -299.

Ubuntu 9.10 on my dual boot HP laptop won't shut down completely (my screen goes blank but the laptop doesn't power off just hangs with no screen display showing anything). I never had this problem before. It appeared after the 2.6.31-19 update.
After I push the power/reboot button and then restart the laptop, I am able to shut down.

I upgraded to 11.04 (loving it so far) and just toying around with it a bit. However, whenever I try to shut it down or restart it takes an abnormally long time. Unfortunately I have not waited long enough for it to shut down properly (waited 10 mins) and it still hasn't turned off

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

I am trying to add an entry to grub2 to turn the computer off using the 'halt' command, but grub2 freezes and I have to manually reboot. I have tried both 'halt' and 'halt --no-apm', both with and without 'insmod halt' first. The 'reboot' command however works fine (even without 'insmod reboot') so it doesnt seem to be an acpi/apm issue. This was all tested at grub2's command line, so there isnt any problems with syntax in the config file. The laptop I am trying this on is an Acer Aspire One, I am using Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 (Lucid), and a more or less default config for grub2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6) as far as modules are concerned.

I have inherited a Dell Inspiron 1300 with a 1.6 Ghz Celeron M and would like to fit a Pentium M 765 2.1 Ghz.
My questions are, will i need to update the BIOS after fitting it, or can i just plug and play?
If an update is not necessary, as such, will i see any kind of gains from doing so?
and if an update is necessary will i have to do it from a boot CD?
Also, as a side note, i plan to eventually boost the RAM and install a bigger HD, will a BIOS update be required after fitting either?

But these downloads are both .exe files The Dell is older and has a floppy drive, but the windows machine Im using does not.
Is there a way to make this as a cd on the Windows machine and boot into that on the Dell? any time Ive updated a bios it has been through Windows.

I have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. I just flashed/updated my BIOS using the MSI LiveUpdate4 utility under Windows 7. Everything worked the way it was supposted to as far as I can tell. Except that I can no longer boot up under Ubuntu. Windows XP and Windows 7 both boot up fine.
I get the error message:

I never set a root password under Ubuntu so I can't do that. It also said after failing to accept my user/sudo password something about running Fsck manually. So I put in the Ubuntu installation CD and am running it live. It comes with Fsck but there are quite a few options and I don't want to choose the wrong one and end up loosing data.

the file to update the bios is an exe, so I installed wine, but when i used it, it gave me a erroe message about not being able to run a driver and so the exe doesnt run.
I have searched for the forums for how to run exe files but the responses seem a little confusing and very varied! probably because it is such a frustratingly frequent question that gets raised
also my laptop cant be on for very long without it shutting down from the heat so I am against the clock !

I recently switched from fedora 14 to 15. Today my computer suddenly shut down during an update, as I thought it overheated I decided to clean the cooling system and reapply thermal paste. However, now the system won't boot anymore ("kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown-block").
I would like to either solve this booting problem, or mount the fedora 15 filesystem and recover some files. Whichever is easier.

2 HD WD 320 put into RAID 0.
To make this configuration, I have not enabled the raid from bios (since Ubuntu gave me problems) but I followed this guide [URL] (Official guides) to configure software RAID offered by ubuntu. Everything went ok and it works perfectly but when released the 10.04 and the system asks me to update, you think there will be some problem or leaving will be updated throughout unchanged RAID configuration?

I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.
