Poston my phone, so forgive the formatting. i just ran the ug to 10.04 from karmic and it appeared to run fine (no errors.) system rebooted and i get a "general error mounting filesystems" and then dumped to maintenance mode. root and swap mount successfully, but root is read only. is there any way to fix this short of a reload. i don't have a second pc very handy at the moment.

Is there a way to change this, perhaps remounting as writable?
An example of this being a problem is that I was unable to open vi because there were too many session files....
Not to mention it would be nice to actually fix problems....
What are you meant to be able to do if you can't make any changes to the filesystem? What kind of maintenance can be expected?
I am not a computer genius. My laptop was notifying me of Windows Genuine Advantage, and I guess I am the last person on earth to know what that is. Now I can only boot in safe mode since it requests activation. There is nothing important on the computer and I only want to use it for watching movies at this time. I want to get rid of Windows altogether, and install Ubuntu. I have downloaded a copy of it and its on my removable drive. I do not have a disc drive on the laptop, only USB. How do I do this? I don't think I have a virtual drive anymore, I think I got rid of the program that was on there.

I have been using Debian for around two years now. I have a small home server running Debian stable i386 and keep it regularly updated (once or twice a week I perform apt-get update and afterwards apt-get dist-upgrade). The system was originally installed with Debian Wheezy and afterwards upgraded.
However, after entering dist-upgrade tonight, around 42 packages had to be updated. I agreed and afterwards got some errors. After apt-get install -f, the result is as follows:

After rebooting the system, I am presented with the Debian Maintenance mode (root password for maintenance or Control-D to continue).

I assume this has to do something with the new Jessie 8.2 release ...
I have a system with a fair amount of software on it. The system stopped working due to a hard drive error. The system have 5 hards drive ( 1T). I need to get into single user mode (maintenance) as some how I messed up the root password. I played with the graphics in kde4 and seem to have losy my installation. i have tried the rescue system option, recover system options and in desperation (i was just about to reinstall) tried booting in failsafe mode, and it worked!
where do i go to find out what the problem is regarding the normal boot mode? i think my pc is starting to resent the continual use of the reset button!
I originally installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my old 32bit Pentium Hp/Compaq dc7100 business desktop, which also has Windows XP installed. It worked fine with the gnome interface, showing the desktop on boot. Over the past year, I used the built in update manager to update the system and apps to 10.04, then 10.10, and a couple of days ago to further 10.10 updates.Last time I booted, it performed a disk check, then booted to a text-mode login-prompt, like on the old UNIX systems before the X gui system got developed.
I have no clue how to launch gnome or x11 and get my desktop back. I don't have the knowledge (or patience) to operate Linux from a command prompt in text-only mode.Will someone tell me how to get UBUNTU 10.10 to launch x11 gnome and show my desktop?I remember having the same problem when I first updated to 10.10, but I don't recall what I did to get the desktop to appear on the display.

Most of the time instead of a pretty graphical splash I'm getting a small low res text version of the boot screen squeezed into the top left hand corner of my display on my laptop with Intel GMA4500 graphics.
Originally I was getting a blank screen with the Plymouth splash only appearing a couple of seconds before log-in. Adding FRAMEBUFFER=y to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash got rid of the blank screen but at the expense of the ugly boot screen mentioned above. To confuse matters, now and again (roughly 1 boot out of 10) I am getting a perfect graphical boot. I've tried reinstalling Plymouth and using different boot themes but to no avail.
So after research decided to go with OpenSuse 11.4 distro.
Installation had no problems but when I try to boot into the normal mode it just gets stuck on the screen that has a loading bar. The loading bar never makes any progress. After having waited for 15min I shut down and booted from failsafe mode. That worked fine twice only and then it prompts me in the command screen for login and password. After I input both it tells me to enjoy but Im still stuck at prompt screen, never loads GUI.
Im now booting windows on my acer Aspire 5633wlmi. It has a Intel Core 2 duo t5500 processor which I understand is 64 bit. So the version of Linux I downloaded was the 64 bit one.
This is after months of Mint, which is limited. One problem. It (Deb)boots to the terminal mode. uh... call me stupid, but I have no idea how to get to my desktop. Never needed that command once in my life. I can't find the answer anywhere. Typical. The most basic info is always overlooked. Whats the command line to get to the desktop so I can reconfig this?

So today I updated my system with aptitude update and aptitude upgrade, and there was few paquages that were updated. Among them was one "linux-image" or "linux-headers". I believe that it is linked to this security update: [URL].... .
During the time aptitude upgrade was running, I was simply surfing on Iceweasel. However, it seems that my system suddenly restarted, without asking me the permission or without notifying me. It really looked like I pressed the restart key, but I actually didn't. My computer battery was full charged and plugged in. So, I do believe that it is my system that rebooted himself after the aptitude upgrade was completed (or even during the upgrade, I don't know).
So my computer restarts, and brings me to GRUB menu: I boot Debian and then I get the usual [ OK ] ***** lines telling that the system boots normally. But this time, I get some errors:

I tried systemctl default but it doesn't boot my system normally. I also tried Control-D but it just reprints the same message. And finally I typed journalctl -xb, which gives me a long log file (855 lines) that I do not understand.
I would give this log file, but it seems that my internet connexion is broken (because of the kernel, I mean), even with an Ethernet cable. So I can't connect with ssh to the computer I use at the moment, and I can't either send it to myself by mail. I tried to mount an usb key, but it seems that any key won't be mounted because of a kernel problem.
An obvious solution to my problem may be to come back to an older kernel version. However, only the lasted kernel version (x86_64 Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64) is installed. dpkg --list | grep linux-image gives me indeed:

I do not know how to come back to an older kernel, as far as I haven't any internet connection and as far as I seem to not be able to load an usb key.
I have just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 using zypper dup (with all the necessary pre steps). After upgrading X does not start with normal boot, only starts with failsafe mode selected. Otherwise the system boots and works in normal mode, only X doesn't start. I have tried to remove and reinstall the radeon driver, but no success. Tried Xorg -configure, with no success.I post my former (11.2) and actual xorg.conf files. Could you help in getting things work normally. If only possible I would like to avoid making a clean install.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter installing ubuntu 64 bit, I installed all my updates and installed the current nvidia driver for my 9800 GTX+ from the additional drivers page. After restarting my computer, ubuntu boots into text mode. I used google and found out a couple of commands like:
After i hit control+alt+f7 it hangs on checking battery state with NO ok to the right of it. after running sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia -current and restarting the computer, the boot hangs on the ubuntu screen everytime.
My specs are:
Core i7 860
4 GB of ram
Nvidia 9800 GTX+
Everytime I try to run Ubuntu, it goes into a screen with Recovery Mode and the only way to get into the graphical enviornment is by selecting "failsafeX" at which point it says:

I installed ubuntu 9.10/9.04 on my usb key as live image couple of time. I have trouble when I try to install wine on my usb key. I am wondering what is the difference if I install my ubuntu into my usb key directly? will that be slower compared with live CD mode? I guess live CD mode may use memory as part of harddisk to save temepory files and normal usb linux installation won't do this for me. Is this true?
If so, do I have a choice to point my tmp directory to system memory area?
my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??
Problem-PC automatically boots into a black screen with blinking cursor. No message or nothing
I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.
I installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a new (for me) computer (Its a Dell Dimension 9200) that I have put my hdd in with its Ubuntu install. The hdd works just fine when booted in my kpc shuttle but does not boot properly in the Dell. I can get a grub menu when I pull the power cord and then reboot. If I select recovery mode, I can get a graphical desktop with the failsafe graphics options or a command line. When I reboot after recovery mode, I do not get a grub menu (even if I press shift during boot) and all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. The monitors then go blank and act like they are no longer connected to the computer.

I've searched and haven't found a solution for this one yet, but here goes. I took a 160GB hard drive and split it into 4 partitions, 1 for Windows XP, 1 for Ubuntu, 1 for swap and 1 for future use (possible Hackintosh installation??).I installed Windows XP first, downloaded all my updates, etc. Then, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and selected the Ubuntu partition. After installing it, when I reboot the machine, it just boots straight into Windows XP, and it doesn't give me the option to choose which installation I want to use.I wanted GRUB; I know the installation is there because when I boot with the LiveCD, it shows up
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed karmic on a dell vostro 1000 - all went well until I installed updates and restarted. Ubuntu booted to tty1 instead of tty7. I'm not entirely sure what changed, but I could do one of 2 things. at the login prompt on tty1 I could wait about 2+ minutes and it would boot to tty7 w/o my network card (but keeping the wireless) or I could ctrl+alt+f7 and get to the normal tty7 with everything working.After a bit of looking around, i found a few solutions, but the problems were not exactly like mine.- I could reinstall gdm (I did this and it had no effect)- I could install minigetty and do something else (not to sure what they wanted here)- I could remove usplashIt turned out that removing usplash did the trick...I dont get the cool little white logo over a black screen

However, about half the time i would boot to reach only a login prompt. If i used CTRL ALT DEL i would then reboot usually into the GUI.So now i only reach a login prompt all the time. How do i get the the GUI to run automatically?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe problem i have is that after sucessfully installing Ubuntu 10.04 (64bits) when i start my PC and i get to grub2 and select Ubuntu it will get stuck at a blank screen with only an "_" flickering on the top of the screen. At first i thought "Hey, maybe it just takes a while to boot" but after letting it sit there for about 20 minutes and nothing happening i decided to restart my PC. And then the same thing happened like 5 times. BUT on the 6th try it booted sucessfully! And everything was working perfectly but as soon as i restarted my PC i would encounter the same problem.
Details I should probably mention that i had the exact same problen on the install process. I tried with a CD i had burned the image on and it would show me install options (Try and install, install, etc.) But when i selected either one of those i would get the "_" flickering and nothing ever happening. Then i tried it with a DVD thinking that the CD was the issue. Same thing. After that i tried with a USB drive and i would get the same exact problem, but on the retry on the USB drive the planets aligned in such a way that i actually got the Virtual Ubuntu loaded from my USB drive.
So it installed sucessfully and when i restarted it i got to GRUB and selected Linux and the "_" would start showing and nothing ever happens. On the <random number> of restarts it actually launched and it picked up my audio, video cards, other NTFS drives, etc. But when i restarted i would get the problem again. I even went trough the whole install process AGAIN (getting it to read from the USB flash drive, starting on Ubuntu) and still no consistent results. Though on the second install it didn't pick up my audio hardware nor my other NTFS drives until the second restart where i was able to use Ubuntu normally. I even upgraded what it told me to upgrade. (now i have two "different" versions of ubuntu on grub, each with it's own safe mode only different by a .24 and a .25 on their names) and right after upgrading and restarting it booted immediately. But after that i'm getting the same issue over and over again.

I tried to install ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop in dual boot with win XP. Ubuntu doesn't boot. It only happens after a reboot of win XP. I upgraded to 10.10 but nothing changed, i made a clean install but still it happens..I mean:
1. Power on
2. grub -> ubuntu
3. splash screen freezed
otherwise:
1. Power on
2. grub -> WinXP
3. reboot
4. grub -> ubuntu
5. ubuntu run perfectly
I just noticed I'm not running with the latest kernel.
This box was originally installed as Ubuntu 10.04, then upgraded to 10.10.
I just recently noticed that, even though kernel 2.6.35-24-generic is installed, this box seems to insist on booting up with 2.6.32-24-generic.
Looking at /boot/menu.lst, it looks ok. (default is 0, and first kernel in list is 2.6.35-24. 2.5.32-24 is the *last* one in the list!)
