Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 (64bit) Setup Missing Fonts

Oct 11, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit but when the Setup loads, the fonts are missing, instead I see a lot of squares [][][][][] [][] [] [][][] and I can't continue because I can't read anything, I try to change language at boot menu but I can't solve it. Also I have tried to install it into a VirtualBox, but the problem is still there. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 Bit and it works perfect, I downloaded the ISO today, this is the finale release. What can I do?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub And Root Device Missing - 64bit System

Sep 1, 2011

The problem after couple installations (10.10 --> 10.04 --> 10.10 --> 10.04-3) is that system goes to "busybox" after complaining about missing root device. I already have come to conclusion that this problem could be solved by telling the system that the root device is at sda1. However, I'm not able to start grub (by pressing "ESC") at boot before problems start. I'm able to start live-cd and I tried to install "over" the old one (same partitions without format, same username). No luck.

And in the busybox /proc/modules is empty for example. And the grub has worked with previous installations.

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing Hard Drive During Setup?

Jan 28, 2010

I've managed to get a hold of a 160GB drive, which I hope to use as my system drive for a server that I'm setting up. This may be the tip of the iceberg (as it tends to be with me for some reason), but this is what's happening:

I got the drive, which has been used before but has been secure erased, and it's been sea tool-ed so is therefore as good as new. It shows up fine in the BIOS, and GParted discovers it straight away. I then split it into 3 partitions:

A ~10GB system partition - sdd1
A ~130GB storage partition - sdd2
A ~4GB swap partition - sdd3

GParted performs all actions straight away with no issues.

After partitioning, fdisk -l reports the following:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x2bd2c32a

[Code]....

I've then gone to install Ubuntu. I go through all the major steps, up to where it asks you where you want to install Ubuntu... at which point sdd just doesn't show up at all. It shows sda, sdb and sdc fine, but sdd is nowhere to be seen.

Two things strike me as odd (although I suppose understandable) - Firstly, every partition in sdd mounts fine, but is owned by root. Secondly, each partition has a folder called 'lost+found' with varying amounts of data. There's 662.3MB in the 10GB partition's lost+found folder, and 6.9GB in the 130GB's folder.

Debian Installation :: Reiserfs Missing - Possible To Add On Squeeze Setup

Mar 5, 2011

I have so far used reiserfs formatting both in my previous debian (sarge, etch and lenny) and opensuse (SLED10, opensuse-10.2,10.3 &11.3) and was very happy. When last month I installed debian squeeze I missed reiserfs (or did I miss noticing it?) Though Ext3 is giving me no trouble. I would love to have reiserfs. Is it now possible to change the filesystems without much trouble.

CentOS 5 :: Emacs 21 Fonts Missing After 5.3 Upgrade?

Apr 14, 2009

After upgrading to CentOS 5.3, emacs is unable to locate its default font. (I've been able to supply emacs with a command-line or config-file link to a different installed font, but that's a workaround, not a solution.) I'm not sure if this is a packaging error, an error in our repository configuration, or something else. Below I've inserted some info that seems relevant. I'd be happy to post other information as requested. I've also attached a probably unnecessary screenshot of emacs displaying little blocks instead of characters at the very bottom of this post. Here's the command-line error thrown by emacs on startup:

[Code]...

whether one of emacs's needed fonts has been moved from one package to another in the latest upgrade. Or (most likely) it's something else I haven't thought of.

Fedora :: Missing MKP3 Controls In 64bit Version

Nov 2, 2009

I have Fedora 11 installed on two different machines, one 32 bit and the other 64 bit. If I play an mp3 file in the 64 bit system---it doesn't seem to matter which player I use---then I can only start, stop, or go to the beginning or end of the selection. I can't advance the stream to some intermediate point. The slider display showing the position is greyed out. The same programs on the same file in the 32 bit system work normally and allow me to advance the position by using the mouse with the slider. This may have something to do with how gnome is configured on the two machines, but I can't figure out what is different.

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 (64bit) GDB Not Working - Missing Separate Debug Info

Oct 11, 2010

I am a hobbyist interested in development and have recently decided to migrate from Windows to Linux and after trying out a number of distributions decided to use openSUSE. After getting somewhat more comfortable with Linux and openSUSE I decided to try and get comfortable with development on this platform.

And hence my problem: After compiling the simplest of programs (hello world) and trying to step through it with gdb I get this output:
Missing separate debuginfo for /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
Try: zypper install -C "debuginfo(buildid)=2b25d8329d1aa713a2cc61b5cb701f6f89c78022"
Missing separate debuginfo for /lib64/libc.so.6
Try: zypper install -C "debuginfo(buildid)=9b674b2caef1982db55e436bca814060e1705b7f"

As soon as I type the command start in gdb. Naturally I tried the recommended zypper downloads to no avail. Furthermore I sought out the glibc debuginfo in the software manager and found nothing which I have not already installed.

On my system are:-devel-32bit
glibc
glibc-32bit
glibc-devel
glibc
glibc-info
glibc-locale
glibc-locale-32bit
glibc-profile
glibc-profile-32bit
gdb
gdbm
gdbm-32bit

All of these are the latest version from the standard 11.3 repositories. I believe these are all the requirements I should need to not have gdb give me errors but sadly that is not the case. Lastly I am running on a 64bit version of openSUSE 11.3.

Fedora Servers :: Setup RAID On DELL Server With F10 64Bit OS?

Jan 22, 2009

I have had no problem installing Fedora OS on any of my Dell servers prior to this post. Anyway, I wouldn't call this a problem but recently, we bought another DELL server with Quad Core, 4GB, etc... AND this model has 2 swappable SAS Harddrives.

I wouldn't call myself an expert but then again I am not a newbie too. However, I have never setup any RAID before and now I am forced to setup RAID1 on this server. So, in a way, I am a newbie in setting up RAID

Would someone please point me in the right direction as I have no idea what I am supposed to do to setup the RAID. FYI, I will be installing Fedora 10 64bit on this server. I would appreciate if you can start from the very beginning, ie. partitioning, formatting the harddrives during OS installation, etc..

Fedora X86/64bit :: Cannot Change Services With 'setup' Command Line In F10 (64-bit)

Jul 8, 2009

The problem relates only to the configuration of services in text mode ("setup", part of the setuptool package). The setuptool package is "setuptool-1.19.4-2.fc9.x86_64". There is no "Services configuration" menu when I start "setup". The tools listed in the setup window are:

- Authentication configuration
- Firewall configuration
- Keyboard configuration

[code].....

IMHO, the reason I don't have a services configuration tool is the missing services configuration files "98services" and/or 99"services" (or something like that) from the setuptool's configuration directory. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) Can someone please let me know what information should be in those two files, and what are the correct file names? Without them I cannot change the services on this computer. (FYI, the GUI (system-config-services) works, however, I need to run this computer in text mode.)

How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? OpenSUSE :: 3.2 Fonts Get Loaded To /usr/local/share/fonts?

Feb 23, 2010

I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.

I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost
